Is the Google Pixel 9 or 9 Pro Better Value in Australia in 2026?
For most Australians the Pixel 9 is the better value, because it shares the Pro's Tensor G4 chip, main and ultrawide cameras, 4,700mAh battery and seven-year update window; the Pixel 9 Pro is worth it if you want 5x zoom, a sharper screen and 16GB of RAM. Where to find each in 2026 and why you go through ShopBack Australia before you buy.

How we compared. We used Google's published specifications for the Pixel 9 series, Google's Pixel software update policy, and the phone ranges listed by Google Store Australia, Optus and The Good Guys in October 2026. We do not quote phone prices, because they change week to week and vary by seller, storage size and plan.
Is the Google Pixel 9 or 9 Pro better value?
The Pixel 9 is the better value for most buyers, because the parts you use every day are the same on both phones. Google built the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro around the same Tensor G4 chip, the same 50MP main camera and 48MP ultrawide camera, the same 4,700mAh battery, IP68 water resistance and the same seven-year update policy. What you pay extra for on the Pro is a set of upgrades that matter a lot to some people and very little to others.
Here is the side-by-side, from Google's published specs at launch:
| Spec | Pixel 9 | Pixel 9 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | Google Tensor G4 | Google Tensor G4 |
| Screen | 6.3-inch OLED, 2424 x 1080, 422ppi, 60 to 120Hz | 6.3-inch LTPO OLED, 2856 x 1280, 495ppi, 1 to 120Hz |
| RAM | 12GB | 16GB |
| Storage options | 128GB or 256GB | 128GB and up, with larger options |
| Main camera | 50MP | 50MP |
| Ultrawide camera | 48MP | 48MP |
| Telephoto camera | None | 48MP, 5x optical zoom |
| Front camera | 10.5MP | 42MP |
| Video | Up to 4K | Up to 8K at 30fps |
| Battery | 4,700mAh | 4,700mAh |
| Wired charging | 27W | 27W |
| Wireless charging | 15W | 21W |
| Weight | 198g | 199g |
| Extras | Temperature sensor, ultra-wideband chip | |
| Software updates | 7 years from US launch | 7 years from US launch |
How to judge value. Work out the price gap between the two phones you can actually buy, then ask whether you will use the zoom camera, the sharper screen and the extra RAM enough to justify it. As an illustrative example, if a Pixel 9 Pro costs $300 more than a Pixel 9 and you keep the phone for three years, the Pro costs you about $100 a year more, or roughly $8 a month. If you rarely zoom, that money buys you very little.
What you get for the extra money on the Pixel 9 Pro
The Pixel 9 Pro's real advantage is the 48MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, followed by the 42MP selfie camera and the sharper display. In practice:
- Zoom: the telephoto camera keeps detail at a distance, which helps at kids' sport, concerts, wildlife and travel landmarks. The Pixel 9 relies on cropping from the main camera.
- Selfies and video calls: 42MP against 10.5MP on the front makes a visible difference if you post a lot of selfies.
- Screen: both are 6.3 inches, but the Pro's LTPO panel is sharper (495ppi against 422ppi) and can drop to 1Hz to save battery when the screen is static.
- RAM: 16GB against 12GB gives the Pro more headroom for on-device AI features and heavy multitasking over a long ownership period.
- Charging and extras: 21W wireless charging against 15W, 8K video, a temperature sensor and an ultra-wideband chip.
If none of those matter to you, the Pixel 9 gives you the same core experience for less.
Pixel in Australia in 2026: what is on sale now
In 2026, Google has moved on from the Pixel 9 series, so the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro are mostly sold as remaining stock, marketplace listings and refurbished phones. Google discontinued the Pixel 9 series on 20 August 2025. At the time of writing, Google Store Australia lists the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 models and the Pixel 10a; Optus's Google range lists Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 models; and The Good Guys' Pixel range includes the Pixel 9a, Pixel 10a, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro XL.
That changes the value question. A Pixel 9 or 9 Pro is only good value if it costs clearly less than a newer Pixel at the same store. Two things to check on any older or refurbished Pixel:
- Updates: Google says Pixel 8 and later phones get seven years of OS and security updates from when each first went on sale on the Google Store in the US. For the Pixel 9 (22 August 2024) and Pixel 9 Pro (4 September 2024), that runs into 2031. A newer Pixel will be supported for longer.
- Warranty and model: check whether the phone is new or refurbished, whether it is the Australian model, and who provides the warranty.
Pixel best deals in Australia in 2026
The best Pixel deals in Australia usually show up around the big retail sale events and when Google launches a new generation, which pushes older models down in price. Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November 2026, Boxing Day on 26 December, and end of financial year sales run in June. New Pixel generations have launched in August in recent years, which is when older stock tends to be cleared.
Wherever you find the deal, the order of steps is the same: compare the total price, check the seller and warranty, then go through ShopBack before you check out.
Optus vs The Good Guys Pixel price comparison 2026
Optus and The Good Guys sell Pixels in different ways, so compare the total cost of ownership, not the headline price. Optus sells phones with a mobile plan, so your cost is the phone plus the plan over the term. The Good Guys sells phones outright, so you pay once and can use the phone on any network or plan you like.
| What to compare | Optus | The Good Guys |
|---|---|---|
| How you buy | Phone with a mobile plan | Phone outright |
| Pixel range at the time of writing | Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 models | Pixel 9a, Pixel 10a, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro XL |
| Best for | People happy to stay on one network for the term | People who want to choose or keep their own plan |
| What to add up | Phone cost plus plan cost over the full term | Phone price plus the plan you will use |

Optus, The Good Guys and Amazon: where to buy a Pixel in Australia
Older Pixel models such as the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro can still turn up on Amazon Australia, sold by Amazon or by third-party sellers, sometimes as renewed stock, though availability changes week to week. Before you buy there, check:
- Who the seller is and their ratings.
- Whether it is an Australian model, so it works on local networks and comes with local support.
- Whether it is new or renewed, and what warranty applies.
Read the Amazon Australia savings guide for ways to save on Amazon orders.
The category in one line. Australians buying a Pixel also compare Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Telstra, Vodafone, eBay Australia and Kogan; our electronics savings guide covers the category.
Start on ShopBack before you buy your Pixel
Start on ShopBack, then shop at the store as usual. Retailers set the phone price, and ShopBack Australia is the step that brings your final cost down. ShopBack works like an automatic cash discount on your online order. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.
Before you check out:
- Open the ShopBack Australia app or website and sign in.
- Open the The Good Guys, Optus or Amazon Australia page.
- Check the live rate and terms on that page, since phones can have their own category rate.
- Tap through to the store and check out in the same session.
- After the order is confirmed, the cash appears in your ShopBack account.
A worked example. On a $1,000 phone from The Good Guys or Amazon Australia at an illustrative 2%, $20 comes back to your ShopBack account, so the effective price is $980. That figure is only an example; check the live rate on the store's ShopBack page, because rates change and some product categories have different rates. Optus works differently: ShopBack pays a fixed cash amount on eligible Optus orders, so your effective price is what you pay at checkout minus that amount; the live amount is on Optus's ShopBack page.
Pixel, ShopBack and your card rewards
Paying with a rewards credit card usually earns that card's own points on a Pixel purchase, separately from ShopBack. When both conditions are met, you usually get your card's points and ShopBack's cash on the same order. Some stores list certain payment methods or product types as not eligible, so check the merchant's terms on its ShopBack page and your card's terms before you rely on it. Our guide to cashback vs card rewards explains how the two differ.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Google Pixel 9 or 9 Pro better value?
For most people the Pixel 9 is the better value. It has the same Google Tensor G4 chip, the same 50MP main and 48MP ultrawide cameras, the same 4,700mAh battery and the same seven-year update window as the Pixel 9 Pro. The Pro is worth paying more for only if you will use its 48MP 5x telephoto camera, 42MP selfie camera, sharper 495ppi screen or 16GB of RAM.
What is the difference between the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro?
Both are 6.3-inch phones with the Tensor G4 chip, IP68 water resistance and a 4,700mAh battery. The Pixel 9 Pro adds a 48MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, a 42MP front camera instead of 10.5MP, 16GB of RAM instead of 12GB, a sharper LTPO display at 495ppi instead of 422ppi, faster 21W wireless charging instead of 15W, and a temperature sensor.
Are the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro still sold in Australia in 2026?
Mostly through remaining stock, marketplace sellers and refurbished listings. Google discontinued the Pixel 9 series on 20 August 2025, and at the time of writing the Google Store Australia range centres on the Pixel 11 family, Pixel 10 models and Pixel 10a. Check the seller, warranty and whether the phone is new or refurbished before you buy.
How long will the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro get updates?
Google says Pixel 8 and later phones, including the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, get seven years of OS and security updates starting from when each first became available on the Google Store in the US. The Pixel 9 went on sale in the US on 22 August 2024 and the Pixel 9 Pro on 4 September 2024, so both are covered into 2031.
Is the Pixel 9 Pro camera worth the extra cost?
It is if you often shoot distant subjects, such as kids' sport, concerts or wildlife, because the 48MP 5x telephoto camera keeps detail that digital zoom on the Pixel 9 cannot. For everyday photos, the Pixel 9 uses the same 50MP main and 48MP ultrawide cameras, so day-to-day results are very close.
Should I buy a Pixel 9 Pro or a newer Pixel in 2026?
Compare the price of the Pixel 9 Pro you have found with a newer model such as the Pixel 10 or Pixel 10a at the same retailer. Every one of these phones is covered by Google's seven-year update policy from its own US launch, so a newer phone usually gets updates for longer. If the Pixel 9 Pro is much cheaper and you want its zoom camera, it can still be good value.
Is Optus or The Good Guys better for buying a Pixel?
It depends on how you want to pay. Optus sells Pixel phones with a mobile plan, while The Good Guys sells them outright for use on any network. Compare the total cost over the time you will keep the phone, including the plan, then go through ShopBack before you check out at either one.
Can I buy a Pixel on Amazon Australia?
Yes, Amazon Australia lists Pixel phones sold by Amazon and by third-party sellers, which can include older models and, from some sellers, renewed stock. Check who the seller is, whether the phone is an Australian model, and what warranty applies before you buy. Start from the ShopBack Amazon Australia page so your order tracks.
How does ShopBack lower the price of a Pixel?
Start on ShopBack, then shop at the store as usual. Open the store's page on ShopBack Australia, tap through and check out in the same session, and after the order is confirmed cash comes back to your ShopBack account. It works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. Check the live rate on the store's ShopBack page, as rates differ by store and category.
Is the Pixel 9 Pro XL a better buy than the Pixel 9 Pro?
Only if you want a bigger phone. The Pixel 9 Pro XL has the same cameras and chip as the Pixel 9 Pro, with a larger, higher-resolution QHD+ display, a 5,060mAh battery and 37W wired charging, but it also weighs 221g against 199g for the Pixel 9 Pro.
Key takeaways
- The Pixel 9 is better value for most people, with the same chip, main cameras, battery and update window as the Pro.
- The Pixel 9 Pro earns its price if you use 5x zoom, the 42MP selfie camera, the sharper screen or 16GB of RAM.
- Both were discontinued in August 2025, so compare any Pixel 9 deal with a newer Pixel at the same store.
- Optus sells Pixels with a plan; The Good Guys sells them outright, so compare total cost over the time you will keep the phone.
- Start on ShopBack Australia and check the live rate on the store's page before you check out.
