Virgin Velocity Forever Gold vs Platinum Plus vs Platinum 2026

Virgin Australia rewrote its Velocity Frequent Flyer tier ladder on 1 October 2025, adding two new tiers at opposite ends of the elite spectrum: Platinum Plus, an invitation tier answering Qantas Platinum One, and Forever Gold, Velocity's first-ever lifetime status. Combined with the Qatar Airways 25 percent stake approved in 2024 and the reshuffled international partner list (Etihad and Hawaiian both exited in mid 2025), the practical question of which Velocity elite tier is worth chasing in 2026 has changed for the first time in years.

The verdict

If you fly Virgin Australia heavily and have done so for years, Forever Gold is the most consequential change in the program's history and worth structuring your flying around: 12,000 lifetime Status Credits since 1 February 2013 (with 9,000 on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by you) delivers Gold benefits for life without any further annual requalification. If you are already flying enough for Platinum and want the concierge-tier polish plus the ability to gift Platinum status to a companion, Platinum Plus is the target. If you are a domestic-heavy business flyer without the long tenure or the premium-cabin volume, Platinum (1,000 Status Credits per year) remains the most defensible ambition, unlocking Qatar Privilege Club reciprocity that is materially more useful for international travel than it was in 2024. Gold is the tier that most Australian Velocity members should actually aim for as a practical first goal, and where the largest year-on-year benefit lift lands.

The Velocity tier structure after 1 October 2025

Velocity now has six tiers rather than four, and understanding the shape matters before you decide which one is worth chasing.

1. Red. The entry tier every member starts at. No Status Credit requirement, no annual qualification, no elite benefits. Members earn Velocity Points on flights and eligible partner activity but receive no lounge access, no priority services, and no additional baggage.

2. Silver. 250 Status Credits earned in the previous 365 days, with at least four Eligible Sectors on Virgin Australia marketed flights. Silver unlocks priority check-in on Virgin Australia flights, additional baggage allowance, priority boarding in select cases, and Virgin Australia lounge access when flying on same-day international sectors on partner airlines under specific conditions. Silver is the practical entry to premium recognition and is achievable for many casual business travellers.

3. Gold. 500 Status Credits earned in the previous 365 days, with at least four Eligible Sectors on Virgin Australia marketed flights. Gold unlocks unrestricted Virgin Australia domestic lounge access, priority security screening at select airports, priority baggage handling, additional baggage allowance, complimentary seat selection, complimentary same-day domestic flight changes, and reciprocal benefits on partner airlines including Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer), Air Canada Aeroplan, United MileagePlus, and Qatar Airways Privilege Club. Gold is where the Velocity value equation starts paying back meaningfully.

4. Platinum. 1,000 Status Credits earned in the previous 365 days, with at least four Eligible Sectors on Virgin Australia marketed flights. Platinum adds guaranteed Economy Reward Seat availability (one trip per year for up to four guests on eligible short-haul routes), upgrade priority using Points-plus-Pay or complimentary upgrade credits on Economy Flex fares and above, higher partner priority for lounge and check-in on all partner carriers, priority phone support through a Platinum service line, and expanded partner reciprocity. Platinum is the highest tier you can qualify for each year without an invitation.

5. Platinum Plus (new from 1 October 2025). 2,000 Status Credits earned in the previous 365 days, with at least 1,500 earned on Virgin Australia marketed flights flown by the member. Platinum Plus is invitation-based, positioned as Virgin Australia's answer to Qantas Platinum One. Benefits include everything from Platinum plus Companion Platinum Status (gift Platinum to a nominated companion for the membership year, a benefit removed from regular Platinum), the ability to use upgrade credits on Economy Choice fares in addition to Flex and above, enhanced same-day lounge upgrade flexibility up to 40 minutes before departure, and a dedicated Platinum Plus service team. The tier is designed for Virgin Australia's most loyal high-value flyers.

6. Forever Gold (new from 1 October 2025). Velocity's first-ever lifetime tier. Eligibility: a total of 12,000 Status Credits earned since 1 February 2013, with at least 9,000 earned on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by the member. Once a member reaches the threshold, Gold status is granted for life without any further annual requalification. The benefit set is standard Gold, not Platinum. Because the counting date is retrospective to 2013, long-tenure members were awarded Forever Gold on Day 1 of the tier launch on 1 October 2025.

The change is structurally interesting: Velocity added lifetime recognition at the Gold tier rather than the Platinum tier, which sets it apart from Qantas Lifetime Platinum (75,000 lifetime Status Credits). The design implicitly recognises that Gold is where the meaningful benefits sit for domestic-heavy Australian flyers, and that many long-tenure Velocity members would find lifetime Gold more valuable than a high-threshold lifetime Platinum they may never actually reach.

Status Credit earning: what actually accumulates

Status Credits are separate from Velocity Points. Points earn on eligible spend and redeem for flights and partner rewards; Status Credits count only toward status qualification. Earning rates depend on fare class, cabin, and route distance.

Virgin Australia domestic. A one-way Economy Choice fare on a short domestic route such as Sydney-Melbourne typically earns in the range of 5 to 10 Status Credits per sector; Economy Flex earns higher; Business earns materially higher (roughly 20 to 40 per sector on similar distances). A member flying 24 domestic returns per year (48 sectors) in Economy Choice will typically land in Silver to Gold territory depending on route mix; a member flying the same volume in Business or on longer transcontinental sectors (Perth) can reach Platinum.

Virgin Australia international short-haul (Bali, Fiji, New Zealand). Higher Status Credit earn per sector than domestic. A single business class return to Bali is worth several times the equivalent domestic economy earn.

Virgin Australia long-haul (Doha, added December 2025 for Melbourne, June 2025 for Sydney/Brisbane/Perth). Long-haul earning is the fastest Status Credit accumulator in the program. A single Business class Sydney-Doha return can contribute a substantial share of the Status Credits required for Gold or Platinum.

Qatar Airways. As a partner following the 2024 stake, Qatar Airways flights earn Velocity Points and Status Credits on eligible fares when credited to Velocity rather than Qatar Privilege Club. Status Credit earn on Qatar's global network materially expands the paths to Velocity Platinum for members who fly Qatar frequently.

Singapore Airlines, ANA, United, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic. Continue to earn Status Credits and Points on eligible fares. Verify credit at booking; some deeply discounted fares earn zero or reduced credit.

Etihad (ended 1 June 2025) and Hawaiian Airlines (ended 1 July 2025) no longer earn or credit to Velocity. Flights on those carriers after those dates should be credited elsewhere.

The practical rule is that flying Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways is now the fast track to Velocity status; every other partnership is complementary rather than central.

Qatar Airways stake and the reciprocity that actually matters

Qatar Airways Group's 25 percent stake in Virgin Australia was announced in October 2024 and approved by the Australian Government, unlocking joint operations and reciprocal loyalty benefits. Virgin Australia returned to long-haul flying in June 2025 with Doha flights from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth (Melbourne followed in December 2025), utilising aircraft wet-leased from Qatar Airways.

For Velocity elite members, the practically meaningful reciprocity works both ways.

• Velocity Gold receives access to Qatar Privilege Club lounges and priority check-in when flying Qatar Airways, aligning to Privilege Club Gold benefits (equivalent to oneworld Sapphire recognition).
• Velocity Platinum receives higher-tier Qatar Privilege Club reciprocity, aligning to Privilege Club Platinum benefits (equivalent to oneworld Emerald recognition).
• Qatar Privilege Club Gold members receive Virgin Australia domestic lounge access on same-day travel, priority check-in, and priority boarding.
• Qatar Privilege Club Platinum members receive Virgin Australia lounge access and priority services aligned to Velocity Platinum benefits.

Important nuance: Virgin Australia is not a oneworld member. The reciprocity is bilateral between Velocity and Qatar Privilege Club, not automatic oneworld alliance access. A Velocity Gold flying British Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL, or American does not automatically receive oneworld Sapphire benefits from those carriers. If you fly the broader oneworld network frequently, crediting to Qantas Frequent Flyer or directly to Qatar Privilege Club may serve you better.

For most Australian Velocity elites, the practical Qatar impact is that a business class trip to Europe now has a coherent path: fly Virgin Australia to Doha, connect on Qatar to your final destination, earn Status Credits toward Velocity Gold or Platinum, and access Qatar Privilege Club lounges throughout. This is a genuinely new capability compared to the pre-2024 program.

Forever Gold as lifetime-earned recognition

Forever Gold deserves separate treatment because it is the first genuine lifetime tier in Velocity's history, and it is set at the tier level (Gold, not Platinum) where the benefits actually matter for most flyers.

Threshold. 12,000 total Status Credits earned since 1 February 2013, with at least 9,000 earned on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by the member. Partner flights count toward the 12,000 total but not toward the 9,000 Virgin Australia component. Points-plus-Pay bookings and complimentary status credits typically do not count toward the flown-Virgin Australia component; verify against your account statement.

Retrospective counting. Because eligibility looks back to 1 February 2013, members with substantial Virgin Australia history received Forever Gold on Day 1 of the tier launch (1 October 2025). Members close to the threshold on that date may reach it within a normal flying year.

Benefits. Forever Gold delivers all Gold benefits year after year without any further annual requalification: Virgin Australia domestic lounge access, priority check-in, priority security screening at select airports, priority boarding, additional baggage allowance, complimentary seat selection, complimentary same-day flight changes, and reciprocal partner benefits including Qatar Privilege Club lounge access, KrisFlyer reciprocity, and United/Air Canada partner recognition.

What Forever Gold does not deliver. Platinum-only benefits (Guaranteed Economy Reward Seat, upgrade credits on Flex-and-above fares, Platinum service line) are not part of Forever Gold. A member who was previously Platinum will still lose those benefits if they stop qualifying annually. Forever Gold is Gold, permanent.

Strategic implication. For a Velocity Platinum member in their fifties or sixties with 8,000 to 10,000 lifetime Status Credits since 2013, one to two more solid Platinum qualification years may push them over the 12,000 threshold and secure lifetime Gold. That is a materially different calculation than chasing an unreachable Lifetime Platinum equivalent. For members with 6,000 to 8,000 lifetime Status Credits, three to five more moderate flying years can reach the threshold at a manageable pace.

Which tier is worth chasing for which shopper profile

Match your actual flying pattern to the tier you should target, not the tier that sounds best.

Your situation	Tier to chase	Why
Fly 1 to 2 domestic returns per year	None (Red)	Status not achievable; do not chase
Fly 4 to 6 domestic returns per year in Economy Choice	Silver	250 Status Credits reachable; pays back in priority check-in and baggage
Fly 8 to 12 domestic returns per year, mostly Economy Choice/Flex	Gold	500 Status Credits reachable; lounge access is where value compounds
Fly 15+ domestic returns per year including some Business	Platinum	1,000 Status Credits reachable; Guaranteed Reward Seat + upgrade credits meaningful
Fly Virgin Australia domestic weekly, plus 2+ international	Platinum Plus (if invited)	2,000 Status Credits with 1,500 on VA flown; concierge-tier benefits
Long-tenure Virgin Australia flyer, 12,000+ lifetime Status Credits since 2013	Forever Gold (auto-awarded)	Lifetime Gold no requalification
Long-tenure but 6,000 to 11,000 lifetime, still flying	Forever Gold (chase)	2 to 4 more solid years likely closes threshold
Fly Qatar Airways to Europe 2+ times per year	Platinum or Gold	Qatar reciprocity is the practical unlock now
Fly broader oneworld network (BA, Cathay, JAL, AA) frequently	Consider Qantas Frequent Flyer instead	Velocity does not extend to broader oneworld
Retired frequent flyer with historic Platinum status	Forever Gold path	Lifetime Gold locks in existing lounge/priority benefits
Business traveller with company-paid tickets crediting to Velocity	Platinum	Company flights build the Status Credit base; adjust ambition to observed earn
Family with one high-earning flyer and dependants	Platinum Plus (if invited)	Companion Platinum Status extends to nominated family member

The single biggest mistake at the elite tier is chasing Platinum Plus when Platinum is already covering the routes you actually fly. The marginal benefit lift from Platinum to Platinum Plus is meaningful but narrow (Companion Platinum Status, Choice fare upgrade credits, service line polish); the Status Credit doubling required to reach it is significant.

The second biggest mistake is not checking your lifetime Status Credit balance. Any long-tenure Velocity member should log into their account and confirm their lifetime balance since 1 February 2013 before making any status run decision; Forever Gold may be closer than expected.

Adaptation strategies for 2026

Strategy one: the Forever Gold sprint. If your lifetime Status Credit balance is between 9,000 and 12,000 since 2013 and you are still active, this is the highest-value ambition available in Australian frequent flyer programs right now. Structure the next one to two years around Virgin Australia domestic and Qatar Airways flying to close the flown-Virgin Australia gap (9,000 threshold) and total gap (12,000 threshold). Once Forever Gold lands, you can dial back requalification pressure without losing lounge access or priority services.

Strategy two: the Platinum defence. If you currently hold Platinum through annual requalification, keep flying the pattern that got you there. The Qatar Airways route to Europe is now a coherent Platinum accumulator; a single business return to Doha materially reduces the domestic Status Credit load required for requalification.

Strategy three: the Platinum Plus invitation lift. If you fly enough for Platinum and consistently exceed 1,500 Status Credits, structuring toward the 2,000 total (with 1,500 flown on Virgin Australia) makes the Platinum Plus invitation realistic. The Companion Platinum Status is the benefit worth chasing if you have a partner or family member who also flies Virgin Australia.

Strategy four: the Gold consolidation. For domestic-heavy business flyers not previously chasing status, Gold (500 Status Credits) is the tier where the value equation genuinely turns positive: Virgin Australia lounge access, priority check-in, priority security at select airports, complimentary seat selection, and Qatar reciprocity on any Doha flights. Consolidating flying onto Virgin Australia through a single membership year to reach Gold is a defensible one-year investment.

Strategy five: the credit-card top-up. Status Credits generally do not come from credit card spend directly, but Velocity Points do. American Express Membership Rewards transfers to Velocity at 2:1 following the December 2025 devaluation; CBA Awards, ANZ Rewards, NAB Rewards, and Westpac Altitude all transfer to Velocity at issuer-set ratios (verify current ratio with your issuer before transferring). Building a healthy Velocity Points balance in parallel with a Status Credit push is what makes elite status actually valuable: lounge access matters, but so does having the points to redeem for the flights that earn status in the first place.

Strategy six: book through ShopBack. On flight and hotel spend around your Velocity travel, go through ShopBack partner platforms before you pay so part of the cost comes back. Cashback tracks on eligible spend at the current published rate and runs in parallel with Velocity Points and Status Credits earned on the underlying booking; both are claimable.

Editorial estimates from Australian point-value trackers (Point Hacks Australia, Australian Frequent Flyer) put a Velocity Point at roughly 1.3 to 1.9 cents on standard Reward Seat redemptions, with the highest cent-per-point value on premium-cabin partner redemptions (Singapore Airlines, ANA, Qatar Airways in business or first). These are indicative estimates that shift as programs revise reward pricing; treat any single cents-per-point figure as a starting point rather than a fixed rate.

When this analysis does NOT apply

• You fly Jetstar or a smaller domestic carrier exclusively. Jetstar sits in the Qantas Group and does not earn Velocity Status Credits. Velocity strategy does not apply.
• You fly only oneworld carriers other than Qatar. British Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL, and American Airlines flights do not credit to Velocity. Consider Qantas Frequent Flyer as the primary program.
• Your flying is entirely company-paid with points centrally claimed. Check the corporate travel policy; many Australian employers claim the points and status credits centrally. Personal status ambition may not be realistic.
• You are chasing a status run purely for lifetime credit. Structured status runs (flying for the sake of Status Credit accumulation) rarely pay back the cash spend unless the flying serves a real purpose. Forever Gold is best achieved by flying you would already do.
• You hold Platinum One or Lifetime Platinum with Qantas. If Qantas is your primary program, adding Velocity elite status is unlikely to compound value beyond occasional Virgin Australia flights.
• You are close to retirement and expect to reduce flying. This is exactly the profile Forever Gold is designed for. Prioritise the flown-Virgin Australia component of the 12,000 threshold now.
• The Qatar Airways route to Europe does not fit your travel pattern. If you fly Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, or Emirates to Europe rather than Qatar, the practical Velocity upgrade from the 2024 stake is smaller for you.

Frequently asked questions

What are the six Velocity tiers in 2026?

From 1 October 2025, Velocity Frequent Flyer has six tiers: Red (entry), Silver (250 Status Credits), Gold (500 Status Credits), Platinum (1,000 Status Credits), Platinum Plus (2,000 Status Credits, invitation), and Forever Gold (lifetime tier, awarded on reaching 12,000 lifetime Status Credits with at least 9,000 earned on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by the member since 1 February 2013). Status Credit thresholds are per membership year for Silver through Platinum Plus. Verify current tier terms on velocityfrequentflyer.com before basing any status run on them.

How is Forever Gold different from Gold?

Gold is an annual tier requiring 500 Status Credits earned in the previous membership year. Forever Gold is a lifetime tier awarded once a member reaches 12,000 lifetime Status Credits since 1 February 2013, with at least 9,000 earned on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by the member. Once granted, Forever Gold delivers Gold benefits for life without any further annual requalification. The benefit set is Gold, not Platinum: Virgin Australia lounge access, priority check-in and boarding, and additional baggage on eligible Virgin Australia flights.

How is Platinum Plus different from Platinum?

Platinum requires 1,000 Status Credits per membership year. Platinum Plus requires 2,000 Status Credits per membership year with at least 1,500 earned on Virgin Australia marketed flights flown by the member, is invitation-only, and adds benefits such as Companion Platinum Status (gift Platinum to a nominated companion), the ability to use upgrade credits on Economy Choice fares (Platinum is Economy Flex and up), and enhanced same-day lounge access flexibility. Both Platinum and Platinum Plus receive a Guaranteed Economy Reward Seat benefit once per membership year for eligible short-haul destinations.

Does Velocity Gold or Platinum give me oneworld access via Qatar Airways?

No. Virgin Australia is not a oneworld member. Qatar Airways is a oneworld member with a 25 percent stake in Virgin Australia (approved 2024), and the two programs offer bilateral reciprocal benefits: Velocity Gold and Platinum status holders receive access to Qatar Privilege Club lounges and priority services when flying Qatar Airways, and Qatar Privilege Club Gold and Platinum members receive reciprocal Virgin Australia benefits including domestic lounge access. This is a bilateral partnership, not oneworld alliance membership; flights on other oneworld carriers (British Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL, American) will not extend Velocity status recognition unless the specific partner offers a separate agreement.

What Status Credit shortfall does Forever Gold close?

The pain Forever Gold solves is the annual requalification treadmill for long-tenure Virgin Australia flyers. Before October 2025, Velocity had no lifetime status tier; a Gold member who flew heavily in their thirties but reduced flying in retirement dropped back to Red. From 1 October 2025, members with 12,000 lifetime Status Credits since 1 February 2013 (with 9,000 on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by the member) receive Gold status for life. Because the counting date is retrospective to 2013, long-tenure members were awarded Forever Gold on Day 1 of the tier launch.

How does Velocity Platinum Plus compare to Qantas Platinum One?

Both are invitation top-tier statuses positioned above the main published tier. Qantas Platinum One requires 3,600 Status Credits per year with a minimum spend threshold in most eligibility windows. Velocity Platinum Plus requires 2,000 Status Credits per year with at least 1,500 earned on Virgin Australia marketed flights flown by the member. In practice Velocity Platinum Plus is achievable for Virgin Australia loyalists flying business regularly, whereas Qantas Platinum One remains structurally harder to reach. The benefit sets differ: Platinum One is a concierge-heavy tier oriented around international travel; Platinum Plus focuses on domestic upgrade flexibility and companion status.

Did Etihad and Hawaiian Airlines leave Velocity in 2025?

Yes. Etihad ceased to be a Velocity partner airline on 1 June 2025. Hawaiian Airlines wound down its Velocity partnership from 1 July 2025, with earn and status credits ending 30 June 2025 and Reward Seat bookings honoured for travel through to 28 February 2026. Virgin Australia has doubled down on Qatar Airways as its primary international partner following the 25 percent stake acquisition approved in 2024. Verify current partner list on velocityfrequentflyer.com before planning a partner redemption.

What credit cards transfer to Velocity in 2026?

American Express Membership Rewards transfers to Velocity following the December 2025 Amex devaluation at 2:1 (verify current ratio with Amex before transferring). CBA Awards transfer to Velocity; ANZ Rewards transfer to Velocity at issuer-set ratios; Westpac Altitude transfers to Velocity as one of several airline options; NAB Rewards transfer to Velocity. Transfer ratios are set by each card issuer and revised periodically; verify the current ratio with your issuer before transferring points. Direct Velocity-branded credit cards are available through Amex Velocity Escape, Amex Velocity Platinum, and other issuer partnerships.

How can I earn cashback on flights and hotels around my Velocity travel?

ShopBack Australia lists cashback on the main booking platforms Australian travellers use around their Virgin Australia flights. For flight comparison, route through Skyscanner or Trip.com before clicking to the airline or OTA. For hotels around your Virgin Australia flights, activate ShopBack at Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com or Wotif before booking. Cashback tracks on eligible booking spend and is separate from any Velocity Points earn; verify the current published rate on each merchant page before booking.

Which Velocity tier is worth chasing for someone flying 8 domestic returns per year?

Eight Sydney-Melbourne or Sydney-Brisbane returns per year in Economy Choice or Flex typically puts a member into Silver comfortably (250 Status Credits) and within reach of Gold (500 Status Credits) if a portion of flights are in Business or on longer routes such as Perth transcontinental. Chasing Platinum (1,000 Status Credits) from 8 domestic returns alone is not realistic; it requires either premium cabin or additional international flights. For pure domestic flyers, Gold is the target that pays back in Virgin Australia lounge access, priority services, and Qatar reciprocity on any Qatar Airways flights taken separately.

Q: Does Velocity Gold or Platinum unlock free inflight Wi-Fi on Virgin Australia in 2026?

Virgin Australia offers inflight Wi-Fi on select 737 domestic aircraft and it is generally available to all guests at no charge on eligible routes, not gated behind Velocity elite status. What Gold and Platinum do change is on-ground: complimentary lounge access with fast Wi-Fi at Virgin Australia lounges, and Qatar Privilege Club lounge access on Qatar Airways sectors, plus priority security at select AU airports. Route hotel and car bookings around your Velocity trips through ShopBack's Booking.com, Agoda or Wotif merchant pages so cashback tracks on the paid amount alongside your Velocity Points.
