Is It Cheaper to Book IHG Hotels Direct or on Booking.com in 2026?
Is it cheaper to book IHG hotels direct or through Booking.com for Australians in 2026? Usually direct, once you count IHG's Best Price Guarantee (match plus 5 times the points, up to 40,000) and IHG One Rewards points, which IHG's terms say are not earned on the room rate for third-party bookings. When Booking.com can still win, how to compare, and going through ShopBack before you book.
Is It Cheaper to Book IHG Hotels Direct or on Booking.com in 2026?
Updated: October 2026. By Hejia Zhang, Editor in Chief, ShopBack.
For Australians in 2026, booking IHG hotels direct is usually the better deal, because IHG's Best Price Guarantee matches a lower qualifying rate and gives members 5 times the points on the room rate, up to 40,000 points, according to IHG. IHG's terms also say third-party bookings, such as those on booking sites, do not earn points on the room rate. Booking.com can still show a lower headline price when a Genius discount applies, so compare final totals first.
ShopBack Australia is a free app and website that gives you cash back when you shop or book online at thousands of stores, including IHG Hotels & Resorts and Booking.com. You open the store from ShopBack, book as usual, and part of what you pay comes back to your ShopBack account. New members can join free at shopback.com.au/signup.
Other hotel brands and booking sites Australians compare, and can open from ShopBack, include Agoda, Expedia, Trip.com, Hotels.com and Wotif.
Is it cheaper to book IHG hotels direct or through Booking.com?
Usually direct, once points and IHG's own price promise are counted, but the headline nightly rate can go either way. Here is how the two compare on the things that change what you pay, from IHG's and Booking.com's published terms at the time of writing:
| What matters | Booking direct with IHG | Booking through Booking.com |
|---|---|---|
| Price promise | Best Price Guarantee: match plus 5 times the points on the room rate, up to 40,000 points (IHG) | We Price Match: refund of the difference on the same stay found cheaper on another website (Booking.com) |
| Member discount | IHG One Rewards member rates and offers at participating hotels | Genius: 10% at Level 1, up to 10% to 20% at Level 3, on selected stays (Booking.com) |
| Points on the room rate | Earned on qualifying rates | Not earned: IHG lists third-party bookings as non-qualifying |
| Member benefits at the hotel | Apply on qualifying rates | IHG says members will not enjoy member benefits on most non-qualifying rates |
| Booking fees | IHG says it charges no booking fees on direct reservations | Taxes and charges shown per listing; Genius applies before them (Booking.com) |
The short version: if the rates are close, direct wins because of points, member benefits and the guarantee. If Booking.com is clearly lower because your Genius discount applies to that IHG hotel, it may be cheaper on price alone, but you give up points and elite benefits on that stay.
IHG says it has 21 brands and more than 7,000 destinations worldwide. In Australia that includes InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels.
How the IHG Best Price Guarantee works
IHG's Best Price Guarantee promises that booking direct gets you the best rate available online for IHG branded hotels, and if it does not, IHG matches the lower rate and gives members bonus points. According to IHG's terms:
- Book direct. Make a confirmed reservation through an IHG website, call centre or the IHG app, using the "Best Available" search.
- Find a lower rate within 24 hours. The lower rate must be on an eligible non-IHG website, found within 24 hours of booking and more than 24 hours before the hotel's standard check-in time.
- Submit the online claim form. IHG says claims must use the online form, not email, and asks you to allow 24 hours for processing.
- IHG checks the rate. It compares the same hotel, room type, stay dates, number of guests and cancellation policy, in the same currency as your IHG booking.
- Match plus points. If the claim qualifies, IHG matches the lower rate and gives 5 times the IHG One Rewards points on the room rate for that stay, up to 40,000 points per claim. The bonus points go to members only.
What does not count. IHG's terms say the lower rate must be available to the general public, which they describe as not needing to join a membership or programme, or log in, to see it. The guarantee does not apply to hotels in Mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan, or to Iberostar Beachfront Resorts. IHG also says the bonus points do not count towards status, and your member number must be on the booking before you check out.
IHG Best Price Guarantee in Australia
IHG hotels in Australia are not on the guarantee's excluded list, so the same rules apply to an Australian booking as anywhere else it runs. Two details matter for Australians:
- Currency. IHG says the lower rate must be available and payable in the same currency as your IHG booking. If you booked in Australian dollars, compare Australian dollar rates.
- Signed-in prices do not qualify. A Booking.com Genius price only shows when you are signed in, so it is unlikely to meet IHG's "general public" test. Compare against the signed-out public rate if you plan to claim.
Do you earn IHG One Rewards points through Booking.com?
Not on the room rate. IHG One Rewards terms list "Online Travel Agency or Third-Party Channel bookings (e.g., Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, etc.)" as non-qualifying rates, with authorised travel agents the exception. On most non-qualifying rates, IHG says members will not earn points on the room rate or enjoy member benefits during the stay.
What you can still earn. IHG says members earn points on other eligible charges billed to the room, such as food and drinks, even when the room rate does not qualify.
Why it matters for the price comparison. Points are part of what a direct booking is worth. If you collect IHG points or are working towards a status level, a slightly higher direct rate can be the better deal overall. If you never use IHG points, compare on price alone.
Points have a shelf life. IHG's terms say club-level points expire if your account has no earn or redeem activity for 12 months, so points only add value if you keep the account active.
IHG official deals and the cheapest way to book
IHG's own savings are member rates and offers for IHG One Rewards members, the Best Price Guarantee on direct bookings, and no booking fees on direct reservations, according to IHG. IHG One Rewards is free to join.
Australians post IHG offers on the community deals site OzBargain, and past ones give a good picture of what tends to come around:
| Past offer | When | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Member rate | Stays to December 2025 | IHG One Rewards members 30% off at Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport, Dandenong and Werribee |
| Points sale | 2025 | 100% more points when buying 5,000 or more points |
| App offer | 2024 | 500 points for downloading and signing in to the IHG app for the first time |
These are past examples, not current offers. Check ihg.com and the offer's own terms before you book.
A simple order for the cheapest IHG booking:
- Join IHG One Rewards and sign in so member rates show.
- Check the same room on Booking.com and other sites, signed out, with the same cancellation policy.
- Compare final totals and weigh the points you would earn direct.
- Open ShopBack last, go to the IHG website from the ShopBack IHG page and book.
- Watch the price for 24 hours in case a lower public rate appears that qualifies for the Best Price Guarantee.
When Booking.com can be cheaper for an IHG hotel
Booking.com can come out lower when the IHG hotel takes part in Genius and your discount applies. Booking.com says Genius gives 10% discounts on selected stays at Level 1, 10% to 15% at Level 2 after 5 bookings in 2 years, and 10% to 20% at Level 3 after 15 bookings in 2 years, applied to the price before taxes and charges.
On a $500 two-night stay before taxes, a 10% Level 1 discount is $50. If IHG's own member rate is less than $50 lower than the public rate, Booking.com may be cheaper on price, though you would give up IHG points on the room rate.
Booking.com's We Price Match refunds the difference if you find the same stay with the same conditions for less on another website after booking. Its terms say offers that need a login, loyalty status or a coupon code do not count, so IHG's member rate is not something Booking.com will match.
How ShopBack lowers what you pay on IHG hotels
Save on your trip by booking flights, hotels and activities through ShopBack. For an IHG hotel booked direct, it works like this:
- Open the ShopBack Australia app or website and go to the ShopBack IHG page.
- Read the Terms on that page, then tap through to the IHG website.
- Sign in to IHG One Rewards so member rates show, and book in that same session.
- After your stay is confirmed, cash lands in your ShopBack account.
ShopBack lowers the effective price of flights, hotels and online orders after you pay. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.
Worked example (illustrative). Say a two-night stay at an IHG hotel comes to $400 on the IHG website. At an illustrative 5%, $20 comes back, so the effective price is $380. Check the live rate on the ShopBack IHG page, because rates change over time.
If Booking.com wins on price for your stay, go through the ShopBack Booking.com page instead. Planning the flights too? Start in the ShopBack Travel Planner.
Paying for IHG with a credit card
Paying with a rewards or travel credit card usually earns card points under your card's own terms, and that is separate from going through ShopBack. Card issuers have run time-limited hotel offers in past years, and these usually need to be saved to your card first and have their own dates and limits, so check the card's terms and IHG's terms before you rely on them together.
Hotel brands and booking sites on ShopBack Australia
ShopBack Australia lists hotel brands and booking sites side by side, so you can open whichever has the best total for your stay. That includes IHG Hotels & Resorts, Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia, Trip.com and Hotels.com. Each store page shows its live rate and Terms. Whichever you choose, go through ShopBack before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to book IHG hotels direct or through Booking.com?
Usually direct, once you count what IHG gives direct bookers. IHG's Best Price Guarantee matches a lower qualifying rate found within 24 hours and gives IHG One Rewards members 5 times the points on the room rate, up to 40,000 points, and IHG's terms say third-party bookings do not earn points on the room rate. Booking.com can still be lower on the headline price when a Genius discount applies, so compare final totals.
What is the IHG Best Price Guarantee?
It is IHG's promise that booking direct gets you the best rate available online for IHG branded hotels. According to IHG, if you book through an IHG direct channel and within 24 hours find a lower qualifying rate on a non-IHG website, it will match that rate and give IHG One Rewards members 5 times the points on the room rate, up to 40,000 points per claim.
Does the IHG Best Price Guarantee apply in Australia?
IHG's terms list the places it does not apply: hotels in Mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and Iberostar Beachfront Resorts. Australian IHG hotels are not on that list. Your booking must be made through an IHG website, call centre or app using the Best Available search, and the claim filed through IHG's online claim form.
Can I claim the IHG Best Price Guarantee with a Booking.com Genius price?
Not usually. IHG's terms say the lower rate must be available to the general public, which they describe as not needing to sign up for a membership, join a programme or log in to a website. Genius prices only show to signed-in Booking.com members, so a signed-out public rate is the one to compare for a claim.
Do I earn IHG One Rewards points if I book through Booking.com?
Not on the room rate. IHG One Rewards terms list Online Travel Agency or Third-Party Channel bookings, such as Expedia and Priceline, as non-qualifying rates, and say members will not earn points on the room rate or enjoy member benefits on most non-qualifying rates. Members can still earn points on other eligible charges billed to the room.
What are IHG's official deals?
IHG's own savings are its member rates and offers for IHG One Rewards members, the Best Price Guarantee on direct bookings, and no booking fees on direct reservations, according to IHG. Past offers posted by Australians include 30% off for members at three Victorian Holiday Inn hotels in 2025 and points sales of up to 100% more points, so check ihg.com for what is running when you book.
How long do I have to make an IHG Best Price Guarantee claim?
According to IHG's terms, you need to find the lower rate within 24 hours of making your reservation, and it must be more than 24 hours before the hotel's standard check-in time. IHG asks you to allow 24 hours for a claim to be processed.
Do IHG Best Price Guarantee bonus points count towards status?
No. IHG says the points in the 5X award above what you would normally earn are bonus points, which do not count towards membership status. Your IHG One Rewards number also needs to be on the reservation before you check out.
How do I pay less on IHG hotels with ShopBack?
Save on your trip by booking flights, hotels and activities through ShopBack. Open the ShopBack IHG page, read the Terms, tap through to the IHG website and book in that same session. ShopBack lowers the effective price of flights, hotels and online orders after you pay. Check the live rate on the ShopBack IHG page.
Is ShopBack cash back the same as IHG points?
No. IHG points are a loyalty currency you redeem for Reward Nights and other rewards. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.

- Booking.com bookings do not earn IHG points on the room rate, according to IHG's terms.
- Booking.com can be cheaper on price when a Genius discount applies to that hotel.
- Go through ShopBack before you book, from the ShopBack IHG page.
