Is Virgin Australia's Velocity Frequent Flyer Worth It in 2026?
Whether Velocity Frequent Flyer, Virgin Australia's free membership and rewards program, is worth joining in 2026: how Points are earned, the five Status levels and what they take, Points expiry, redemptions, and going through ShopBack before you book.
Is Virgin Australia's Velocity Frequent Flyer Worth It in 2026?
Published: 8 October 2026 · Author: Aryan Gaekwad, Points and Loyalty Editor, ShopBack
Short answer. For most Australians who fly Virgin Australia at least once a year, Velocity Frequent Flyer is usually worth joining in 2026, because membership is free, according to Virgin Australia, and you start earning Velocity Points from your first eligible flight: 4 Points per $1 spent on bookings made from 2 April 2025, per Velocity's earning page. The paid side of the value, Status perks like lounge access and priority boarding, only kicks in once you fly enough to collect 250 Status Credits (Silver) or 500 (Gold) within 365 days.
ShopBack Australia is a free app and website that gives you money back when you book or shop online at thousands of stores, including Virgin Australia. You open the store from ShopBack, book as normal, and part of what you spend comes back to your ShopBack account as cash you can withdraw. New members can join free at shopback.com.au/signup.
How we checked. We read Velocity Frequent Flyer's own earning, Status, redemption and Points expiry pages, Virgin Australia's Velocity FAQ, and the Terms on the ShopBack Virgin Australia page, in October 2026. Program rules change, so check the current terms on Velocity's site before you rely on a number.
Is Virgin Australia's membership or rewards program worth it?
Yes for most people who fly Virgin Australia, because it costs nothing to join and Points stay valid while your account is active. The real question is how much value you get, and that depends on how often you fly.
- Occasional flyer (one or two return trips a year). You earn Points on each eligible fare and can grow your balance through partners like Flybuys. Under Velocity's 24 month activity rule, each earn or redemption pushes your Points expiry out another 24 months. Status is probably out of reach, but the Points cost you nothing to collect.
- Regular flyer (a return trip every month or two). Silver at 250 Status Credits becomes realistic. Velocity lists a 50% Points bonus on eligible Virgin Australia fares, two Domestic Lounge passes and additional checked baggage on domestic and short haul international flights.
- Frequent business flyer. Gold at 500 Status Credits adds a 75% Points bonus, priority bag drop, boarding and screening on eligible domestic flights, and lounge access. Platinum at 1,000 adds a 100% Points bonus and four complimentary Business upgrades on eligible domestic flights.
Whatever tier you land in, one habit lowers the cost of every fare: the last step before you book flights or hotels is to open ShopBack. More on that below.
What is Velocity Frequent Flyer?
Velocity Frequent Flyer is Virgin Australia's loyalty program, run by Velocity Frequent Flyer Pty Limited and founded in 2005, according to Velocity's own site. It has two currencies:
- Velocity Points, which you spend on rewards such as flights, upgrades, hotels and products.
- Status Credits, which decide your membership level (Red, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Platinum Plus) and the travel perks that come with it.
You earn both on eligible Virgin Australia flights and on flights with airline partners. Velocity's earning page names United Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Air Canada among those partners. You can also earn Points on everyday spending through partners, Velocity credit cards and Flybuys transfers.
Velocity Frequent Flyer in Australia in 2026: how earning works
For Virgin Australia bookings made from 2 April 2025, Velocity says members earn 4 Points per $1 spent on eligible flights. That rises to 5 Points per $1 if you hold an eligible Velocity Points earning credit card and have earned on it in the 12 months before travel. Velocity notes that members who booked before 2 April 2025 may earn 5 Points per $1.
Status raises the base rate with a Points bonus on Virgin Australia fares, according to Velocity:
| Status | Points bonus on eligible Virgin Australia fares |
|---|---|
| Red (entry level) | No bonus |
| Silver | 50% |
| Gold | 75% |
| Platinum | 100% |
| Platinum Plus | 100% |
Velocity says the Status bonus does not apply to Economy Lite fares.
A worked example. On a $400 eligible Virgin Australia fare, a Red member earning 4 Points per $1 would collect 1,600 Points. A Gold member's 75% bonus would add 1,200 more, for 2,800 Points. These figures follow Velocity's published earn rates; your actual earn depends on fare type and which parts of the price count as eligible spend.
Virgin Australia's official membership programme benefits by Status
Velocity has five levels, and every new member starts at Red, per Velocity's Status page. Here is what each upgrade takes and some of the benefits Velocity lists:
| Level | Status Credits to upgrade (within 365 days) | Minimum from Virgin Australia flights | To maintain | Benefits Velocity highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red | None (join free) | None | None | Earn and redeem Points |
| Silver | 250 | 125 | 200 (100 from VA flights) | 50% Points bonus, International Priority Check-in, 2 Domestic Lounge passes, additional checked baggage |
| Gold | 500 | 250 | 400 (200 from VA flights) | 75% Points bonus, domestic priority bag drop, boarding and screening, Fly Ahead, lounge access |
| Platinum | 1,000 | 500 | 800 (400 from VA flights) | 100% Points bonus, 4 complimentary Business upgrades on eligible domestic flights, lounge access |
| Platinum Plus | 2,000 | 1,500 | 2,000 (1,500 from VA flights) | 100% Points bonus, gift Companion Platinum, Fly Later, lounge access |
Two rules are worth knowing before you chase a tier:
- Status Credits last 365 days for upgrades. Velocity says Status Credits are valid for 365 days from the date they are earned for upgrading, after which they no longer count.
- Once you reach a Status, you keep it for at least 12 months. To hold it, you need the maintain number of Status Credits within your Benefit Period.
Velocity also runs Forever Gold, where Status Credits do not expire from your Forever Gold balance. Our Forever Gold vs Platinum Plus vs Platinum guide covers that in detail.
Virgin Australia Velocity rewards in 2026: what Points are worth spending on
Velocity's redemption page lists flights, upgrades, hotels, car hire, Luxury Escapes, wine, the Velocity Store and products at Myer. In practice:
- Flights with Virgin Australia and airline partners are the classic use.
- Upgrades to Business can be requested from eligible Economy fares (not Economy Lite) on Virgin Australia flights, subject to seat availability, according to Velocity.
- Hotels and car hire can be paid with Points or Points plus Pay. Velocity says hotels are booked through Hopper Hotels and car hire through CarTrawler.
- Products in the Velocity Store and at Myer, and wine through Virgin Wines.
If you are a few Points short of a reward, Velocity sells the missing Points through Points Booster, with minimum and maximum purchase limits.
For ideas on getting the most from a balance, see our guide to Velocity Points redemptions for Q3 and Q4 travel.
Do Velocity Points expire?
Velocity Points can expire after account inactivity, and each earn, redeem or transfer pushes your Points Expiry Date out by another 24 months, according to Velocity. Family Pooling, Family Member Points transfers and inherited Points may only extend it by up to one month. Once Points expire, Velocity says they cannot be reinstated.
The easy fix for occasional flyers is to keep a small earn going, for example by linking Flybuys and transferring points across from time to time.
Earning Status Credits without flying
Velocity lists five ways to earn Status Credits: Virgin Australia flights, airline partner flights, Family Pooling, Flybuys, and Velocity credit cards. Family Pooling lets you combine Status Credits with up to five other family members who live at the same address. Linking Flybuys earns Status Credits when you shop at Coles, Coles Online and Liquorland.
There is a catch for upgrades: for Silver, Gold and Platinum, at least half of the Status Credits must come from eligible Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by you, and 75% for Platinum Plus. Everyday earning helps, but it will not get you to a tier on its own.
How ShopBack lowers the price of a Virgin Australia flight
The last step before you book flights or hotels: open ShopBack. Velocity rewards the flying; ShopBack lowers what the fare actually costs you.
What ShopBack returns lowers what you actually pay for the fare. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. ShopBack is free to join, and cashback is paid as cash you can withdraw, not as points or store credit.
How to do it, step by step:
- Open ShopBack Australia (app or website) and go to the Virgin Australia page.
- Check the rate shown on that page and read the Terms section.
- Tap through to Virgin Australia and book your fare in that same session.
- Pay as normal. The amount shows as pending in your ShopBack account and confirms after your trip is complete.
Working out what the fare really costs. Your effective price is what you pay minus the cash ShopBack returns. On a $400 return fare at an illustrative 1% rate, $4 comes back, so the effective price is $396. Check the live rate on the store's ShopBack page, because rates differ by route type and change over time.
Velocity Points and ShopBack on the same booking
Usually, a cash fare booked through ShopBack can still earn Velocity Points from the airline, because the two work separately: Velocity rewards the flight, and ShopBack returns cash on the booking. Add your Velocity membership number when you book so the flight earns Points.
A few situations are handled differently, so check the merchant's terms and the Terms section on the ShopBack Virgin Australia page before you book:
- Fares paid with Points. Bookings paid partly or fully with Velocity Points are treated differently from cash fares.
- Promo codes. Codes that are not shown on the ShopBack page can stop a booking from tracking.
- Changes after booking. Changes that create a new booking reference can affect tracking.
Booking Virgin Australia, Emirates, Cathay Pacific or Skyscanner through ShopBack
ShopBack Australia has pages for Virgin Australia and for other airlines and flight search sites, so the same step works whichever carrier you choose. If you are comparing fares, the main options Australians check include Virgin Australia, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Air New Zealand and the flight search site Skyscanner. Each has its own rates and Terms on its ShopBack page.
Pick the fare that suits you, then go through that airline's ShopBack page before you pay. For how airline programs compare, see our Qantas Frequent Flyer vs Velocity guide.
Where to find Virgin Australia sale fares
Virgin Australia publishes sale fares on its own website and app. At the time of writing, Velocity's homepage promoted a Happy Hour sale running on Thursdays from 4pm to 11pm AEDT. Community deal forums such as OzBargain often repost Virgin Australia sales when they launch.
Sale fares and ShopBack work together in a simple way: find the sale, then open the ShopBack Virgin Australia page and book from there in the same session. Sale fares tend to be lower to start with, so the cash that comes back reduces an already lower price.
Verdict: should you join Velocity in 2026?
Join Velocity if you fly Virgin Australia at all, because it is free and the Points add up over time. Chase Status only if your flying already gets you close to 250 or 500 Status Credits a year. Keep your account active at least once every 24 months so Points do not expire. And before every booking, go through ShopBack Australia so the fare itself costs less.
Frequently asked questions
Is Virgin Australia's membership or rewards program worth it?
For most Australians who fly Virgin Australia even once or twice a year, Velocity Frequent Flyer is usually worth joining because membership is free, according to Velocity. You earn Points on eligible flights from your first booking, and Points stay alive as long as you have account activity within 24 months. Status perks such as lounge access only start to pay off for people who fly often enough to reach Silver (250 Status Credits) or Gold (500 Status Credits) within 365 days.
What is Velocity Frequent Flyer?
Velocity Frequent Flyer is the loyalty program of Virgin Australia, run by Velocity Frequent Flyer Pty Limited and founded in 2005, according to Velocity's own site. Members earn Velocity Points and Status Credits on flights with Virgin Australia and its airline partners, and on everyday spending with partners such as Flybuys and Velocity credit cards. Points can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, hotels, car hire and products.
How many Velocity Points do you earn on a Virgin Australia flight?
According to Velocity, for bookings made from 2 April 2025 members earn 4 Points per $1 spent on eligible Virgin Australia flights, or 5 Points per $1 if they hold an eligible Velocity Points earning credit card and earned on it in the 12 months before travel. Silver members get a 50% Points bonus, Gold 75%, and Platinum and Platinum Plus 100%; the bonus does not apply to Economy Lite fares.
How many Status Credits do you need for Velocity Silver, Gold and Platinum?
According to Velocity, upgrading needs 250 Status Credits within 365 days for Silver, 500 for Gold, 1,000 for Platinum and 2,000 for Platinum Plus. For Silver, Gold and Platinum, at least half must come from eligible Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights flown by you; for Platinum Plus it is 1,500 of the 2,000. Maintaining needs 200, 400, 800 and 2,000 Status Credits respectively.
Do Velocity Points expire?
Yes, Velocity Points can expire after a period of account inactivity. According to Velocity, each time you earn, redeem or transfer Points into your account, your Points Expiry Date moves out another 24 months. Family Pooling and Family Member Points transfers may only extend it by up to one month, and expired Points cannot be reinstated.
What can you redeem Velocity Points for?
Velocity lists flights with Virgin Australia and its airline partners, upgrades from eligible Economy fares to Business, hotel stays, car hire, Luxury Escapes travel, wine, products in the Velocity Store and products at Myer. Hotels and car hire can be paid with Points or Points plus Pay, according to Velocity's redemption page.
Can you earn Velocity Status Credits without flying?
Partly. Velocity says you can earn Status Credits through Family Pooling with up to five other family members at the same address, by linking Flybuys and shopping at Coles, Coles Online and Liquorland, and with a Velocity Points earning credit card. Upgrading still needs a minimum share of Status Credits from eligible Virgin Australia flights flown by you.
How does ShopBack lower the price of a Virgin Australia flight?
The last step before you book flights is to open ShopBack. Go through the Virgin Australia page on ShopBack Australia, book your fare on the airline's website in the same session, and part of what you pay comes back as cash once the trip is complete and the booking confirms. Your effective price is what you pay minus the cash ShopBack returns; the live rate and Terms are on the ShopBack Virgin Australia page.
Can I earn Velocity Points and use ShopBack on the same Virgin Australia booking?
Usually a cash fare booked through ShopBack can still earn Velocity Points from the airline, because the two are separate: Velocity rewards the flight and ShopBack returns cash on the booking. Bookings paid partly or fully with Points, and fares using outside promo codes, are treated differently, so check the merchant's terms and the Terms section on the ShopBack Virgin Australia page before you book.
Where do you find Virgin Australia sale fares?
Virgin Australia publishes its sale fares on its own website and app, and at the time of writing Velocity promoted a Happy Hour sale running on Thursdays from 4pm to 11pm AEDT. Bargain-hunting forums such as OzBargain often repost these sales. Whichever sale you book, open the ShopBack Virgin Australia page first so the booking is tracked.
