Are Kindle Books Free, or Do You Have to Pay? Australia 2026
Whether Kindle books are free or paid in Australia in 2026: the free Kindle app, Amazon's Top 100 Free list, Prime Reading with Amazon Prime at $9.99 a month or $79 a year, Kindle Unlimited, library lending, and going through ShopBack before you buy on Amazon Australia.
Are Kindle Books Free, or Do You Have to Pay? Australia 2026
Published: 8 October 2026 · Author: Ziling Liu, Personal Finance Editor, ShopBack
Short answer. In Australia in 2026, most Kindle books cost money, but you can read plenty for free. The Kindle reading app is free, Amazon.com.au keeps a Top 100 Free list in its Kindle Store, and Prime members ($9.99 a month or $79 a year, according to Amazon at the time of writing) get Prime Reading, a rotating selection of over a thousand ebooks. Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid subscription with a free trial.
ShopBack Australia is a free app and website that gives you money back when you shop or book online at thousands of stores, including Amazon Australia. You open the store from ShopBack, buy as normal, and part of what you spend comes back to your ShopBack account as cash you can withdraw. New members can join free at shopback.com.au/signup.
How we checked. In October 2026 we read Amazon.com.au's Prime page, its Kindle Unlimited sign-up page, its Kindle Store best sellers page and its free delivery help page, Libby's help page on Kindle lending, and the Terms on the ShopBack Amazon Australia page. Prices and programs change, so check Amazon's own pages before you rely on a number.
Are books on Kindle free, or do you have to pay for them?
Both. Most Kindle books are paid, but there are at least four ways to read free, and the reading app itself costs nothing. Here is how the options line up in Australia at the time of writing:
| Option | What it costs | What you get | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle reading app | Free | Read Kindle books on a phone, tablet or computer | Amazon Kindle Unlimited page |
| Top 100 Free list | Free | Amazon's most popular free Kindle titles, updated frequently | Amazon.com.au Kindle best sellers |
| Free samples | Free | The opening pages of most Kindle books before you buy | Kindle Store product pages |
| Prime Reading | Included with Prime ($9.99 a month or $79 a year) | A rotating selection of over a thousand ebooks, comics and short works | Amazon.com.au Prime page |
| Kindle Unlimited | Paid monthly subscription, with a free trial offered | Millions of titles and thousands of audiobooks, up to 10 at a time | Amazon.com.au Kindle Unlimited page |
| Buying a Kindle book | The listed price per book | You own a licence to read that title in your library | Kindle Store |
So the honest answer: if you read one or two specific new releases a year, you will usually pay for them one by one. If you read a lot and are flexible about titles, free lists, Prime Reading or a subscription can cut what you spend to very little.
Kindle books in Australia in 2026: what's free
Amazon.com.au's Kindle Store best sellers page has two tabs, Top 100 Paid and Top 100 Free, and the free tab is updated frequently. That is the quickest place to start if you just want something to read tonight.
Other free routes:
- Free samples. Most Kindle books let you send a sample to your app or device. It is a good way to check whether a book holds you before you pay.
- Out-of-copyright classics. Older works that are now in the public domain are often listed at no cost in the Kindle Store.
- Author promotions. Independent authors often make the first book in a series free for a while to draw readers in. Bargain forums such as OzBargain regularly post these when they appear.
- Prime Reading, if you already pay for Prime (more below).
Free titles rotate, so a book that is free this month may be paid next month. Check the price on the book's page before you tap buy.
Do you need a Kindle device to read Kindle books?
No. Amazon's Kindle Unlimited page says "You don't need to own a Kindle device", because its Kindle reading apps are free. You can read on an iPhone, Android phone, tablet or computer.
A Kindle e-reader is optional. People usually buy one for the paper-like screen, which is easier on the eyes for long sessions, and for battery life that makes it handy on long-haul flights. If you do buy one on Amazon Australia, Kindles sit in the Amazon Devices category, which is listed on the ShopBack Amazon page.
Prime Reading: the free books that come with Amazon Prime
According to Amazon.com.au at the time of writing, Prime costs $9.99 a month or $79 a year after a 30-day free trial, and Prime Reading is included. Amazon describes Prime Reading as "a rotating selection of over a thousand e-books, comics, short works and more" that Prime members read for free.
The maths for a reader: $79 a year works out to about $6.58 a month, compared with $9.99 a month on the monthly plan, or $119.88 over 12 months. If you would pay for Prime anyway for delivery or Prime Video, Prime Reading is free reading you already have. If you are only after books, compare it with Kindle Unlimited below.
Amazon lists these other Prime benefits on its Australian Prime page:
- Free delivery in as fast as one day with no minimum on Prime eligible orders (excludes select remote areas).
- Prime Video, Amazon Music Prime and Amazon Luna games each month.
- 30 minute early access to Prime eligible lightning deals, and exclusive access to special shopping deals and events.
Kindle Unlimited in Australia: what you pay for
Kindle Unlimited is a paid monthly subscription, and Amazon.com.au promotes it with a free trial. According to Amazon's Australian Kindle Unlimited page, members get:
- Unlimited access to millions of titles that you can read again and again.
- Thousands of books with audio narration.
- The ability to keep up to 10 books at a time, with no due dates.
- Reading on any device through the free Kindle app.
Amazon shows the current monthly price and any trial offer after you sign in, and it can change, so check the sign-up page before you commit. A simple test: if you would otherwise buy more than one or two Kindle books a month, the subscription often works out cheaper. If you read one book a month, buying it outright may cost less.
Two things to know before you sign up:
- Kindle Unlimited is not the same as Prime Reading. Prime members do not get Kindle Unlimited automatically.
- Not every popular title is in Kindle Unlimited. Many big new releases are only available to buy.
Can you borrow Kindle books from an Australian library?
Not onto a Kindle e-reader through Libby. Libby's help page says reading Libby books on a Kindle e-reader is "available in the U.S. only". Australian library members can usually still borrow ebooks for free and read them in the Libby app, or in the app their library uses, on a phone or tablet.
That makes your local library the cheapest option of all if you do not mind reading on a phone or tablet rather than a Kindle.
Amazon cheapest way to save money in Australia in 2026
Amazon.com.au says eligible orders over $59 get free delivery within Australia, and Prime members get free delivery with no minimum on Prime eligible orders. For readers buying print books or a Kindle device, those two rules decide most of your delivery cost.
A practical order of steps:
- Check if the title is free first. Top 100 Free, Prime Reading, a library loan or a free sample might cover it.
- Bundle physical orders past $59 if you are not a Prime member, so delivery is free.
- Check Amazon's own deals pages (below) for a discount on the title or device.
- Make ShopBack the last step before you pay, so part of the order comes back as cash.
Your effective price is what you pay minus the cash ShopBack returns. On a $200 Amazon order at an illustrative 5%, $10 comes back, so the effective price is $190. Check the live rate on the store's ShopBack page, because rates differ by category and change over time.
Amazon official deals: where Amazon lists them
Amazon.com.au runs its own deals pages, including Today's Deals in the main menu and Kindle Deals in the Kindle Store menu. Prime members also get 30 minute early access to Prime eligible lightning deals, according to Amazon's Prime page.
For readers, Kindle Deals is the page to watch: discounted ebooks change regularly. For devices, big sale events are when e-readers tend to be discounted. Prices change often, so check the product page on the day.
Amazon Prime rewards: is Prime the cheapest option for readers in 2026?
Prime is the cheapest option only if you use more than the books. At $79 a year (Amazon's annual price at the time of writing), Prime pays off through free delivery with no minimum, Prime Video and Prime Reading together. If you only want books, the free routes (Top 100 Free, samples, library apps) cost nothing, and Kindle Unlimited suits heavy readers.
One more point: the ShopBack Amazon page lists Prime membership purchases and Kindle Unlimited among its exclusions. So join Prime or Kindle Unlimited directly, and use ShopBack for eligible orders you place afterwards.
How ShopBack lowers what you pay on Amazon Australia
ShopBack lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. That is what people are looking for when they search "Amazon cashback ShopBack": ShopBack Australia has an Amazon Australia page with its categories, Terms and timeline.
How to do it, step by step:
- Empty your Amazon cart and close the Amazon app. The ShopBack page says items added to your cart before clicking through from ShopBack are not eligible.
- Open ShopBack Australia (app or website) and go to the Amazon Australia page.
- Check the categories shown and read the Terms and exclusions.
- Tap Shop Online, add your items and pay in that same session.
- The amount shows as pending in your ShopBack account and confirms later.
What the ShopBack Amazon page says at the time of writing:
- Eligible categories include Amazon Devices (Kindles, Echo, Fire TV and tablets and more) and Physical Books, among others.
- Exclusions include Prime membership purchases, gift cards, Kindle Unlimited, mobile apps, Audible, codes entered manually in the Promo Code field, and recurring Subscribe and Save orders.
- Timeline: tracked in about 4 days, confirmed in about 95 days.
Kindle ebook purchases are not shown as their own row, so check the category list on the ShopBack Amazon page before you expect money back on an ebook.
Shopping beyond Amazon? Australian readers also buy books and devices at Booktopia, Big W, Myer, Kogan and eBay Australia, and each has its own ShopBack page with its own Terms.
Amazon credit card rewards and ShopBack on the same order
Usually, you can pay with a rewards credit card and still get money back through ShopBack, because the two work separately: your bank rewards the payment and ShopBack returns cash on the order. Bank offers, points rates and eligible spend categories differ by card, so check your card's terms and the merchant's terms, plus the Terms on the ShopBack Amazon page, before you pay.
Reading for a trip? Book the trip through ShopBack too
The last step before you book flights or hotels: open ShopBack. Plenty of Australians load up a Kindle or the Kindle app before a long-haul flight, and the trip itself is usually the bigger spend. ShopBack Australia has pages for airlines, hotel sites and travel agents, and the same rule applies: open ShopBack first, then book on the travel site in the same session.

What OzBargain users watch on Amazon
OzBargain, Australia's big bargain forum, regularly carries posts about Amazon.com.au deals, including free and discounted Kindle ebooks and e-reader sales. It is a useful early alert. Before you buy from a forum tip, open the deal from the ShopBack Amazon page in a fresh session, because the ShopBack Terms say codes typed into the Promo Code field and items already in your cart can stop an order from counting.
Verdict: free or paid?
Kindle books are free if you use the free routes, and paid if you want specific new releases. Start with Top 100 Free, samples, Prime Reading (if you have Prime) and your library's app. Pay per book for titles you really want, or try Kindle Unlimited if you read several books a month. When you do buy on Amazon Australia, make ShopBack the last step before you pay.
