Qantas vs Velocity vs Amex Membership Rewards: Where to Park Your Points in Australia 2026

Short verdict: keep flexibility in Amex Membership Rewards until you have a specific reward seat in mind, then transfer at 2:1 to Qantas or Velocity based on where you are actually flying. Qantas wins on partner reach and premium international redemptions. Velocity wins on cheap domestic economy and Star Alliance access via Singapore Airlines and ANA. Direct-earn Qantas Amex cards are the shortest path if you already know Qantas is your home currency. For AU flyers who mix domestic and Asia, the pragmatic 2026 stack is Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium plus a targeted Velocity or Qantas credit card, hotel bookings via ShopBack Travel Planner for cashback on top of points.

If you are new to ShopBack, it is a cashback and rewards platform that pays you back on purchases from 2,000+ Australian retailers including Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com, and Klook. Cashback stacks on top of the Qantas or Velocity points you already earn on the credit card behind the booking.

The three-currency landscape in Australia in 2026

Australian points collectors in 2026 mostly deal with three currencies. Qantas Frequent Flyer is the largest and most integrated, with Woolworths Everyday Rewards, the Qantas Wine store, and a broad co-brand card list feeding it. Virgin Australia Velocity is the second national program, tighter on domestic pricing and expanding fast through the Commonwealth Bank Yello tie-up from 1 October 2026. American Express Membership Rewards is the flexible pivot currency: earn on Amex cards, then transfer to airline partners including both Qantas and Velocity.

Two structural shifts define the 2026 landscape. First, the Amex Membership Rewards devaluation on 15 December 2025 pushed most airline transfer ratios worse. Qantas and Velocity held at 2:1 for eligible cardholders. British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad Guest, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Virgin Atlantic all moved from 2:1 to 3:1 or worse. That makes the two Australian programs relatively more attractive from Amex than they were before, even at 2:1.

Second, Velocity's CommBank partnership widens the Velocity earn base to more than nine million CommBank Yello customers from 1 October 2026. Points earned through savings accounts, home loans, insurance, and credit cards can convert to Velocity Points. That materially changes the earn calculus for anyone who banks with Commonwealth Bank.

Qantas Frequent Flyer: partner reach and premium cabins

Qantas Frequent Flyer wins on structural breadth. The Oneworld alliance gives Qantas Point redemptions access to British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, American Airlines, Qatar Airways, Iberia, and Finnair. That partner list opens business and first class routes that Velocity cannot match on Star Alliance, particularly to Europe via London or Doha, to North America via Dallas or Los Angeles, and to South America via Santiago.

Qantas Classic Reward pricing sits in the middle of the three currencies. Domestic economy starts at 9,000 points one way on short routes. Sydney to Perth is 14,000 to 20,000 points in economy and up to 62,000 in business. International business class to Southeast and Northeast Asia sits in the 72,000 to 108,000 point range on Qantas metal or partners. Jetstar domestic flights are available from 5,700 points one way plus taxes and carrier charges, a genuine budget entry point inside the Qantas ecosystem.

Where Qantas is weaker: domestic economy pricing on trunk routes is generally higher than Velocity for the same seat, carrier charges on partner premium redemptions can be steep (particularly on British Airways and Cathay Pacific), and reward seat availability on Qantas metal to Europe is chronically constrained despite the release of 400,000 additional Points Planes seats in the 2024 program refresh.

Credit-card earn stack into Qantas Points in Australia:

• Direct-earn Qantas Amex cards (Qantas American Express Ultimate, Discovery, Premium): earn Qantas Points directly, bypassing Membership Rewards.
• Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium (Platinum Charge, Centurion): transfer to Qantas at 2:1.
• Qantas co-brand bank cards: NAB Qantas Rewards, ANZ Frequent Flyer, Westpac Altitude Qantas, and CommBank Awards with Qantas transfer, direct-earn Qantas Points on eligible spend.

Book Qantas or partner flights and stack hotel cashback. Compare hotels on Booking.com via ShopBack and earn cashback on top of your Qantas Points earn on eligible partner bookings.

Virgin Australia Velocity: cheap domestic and Star Alliance access

Velocity Frequent Flyer wins on domestic economy pricing and Star Alliance partner access. Lead-in domestic economy reward seats start from 5,900 points on eligible routes since October 2024. Velocity's demand-tier pricing prices domestic seats at 6,200, 7,800, and 9,900 points depending on route and inventory. Those numbers undercut Qantas Classic Reward on most trunk routes, particularly on Sydney to Melbourne, Sydney to Brisbane, and Melbourne to Brisbane.

Velocity's international sweet spots run through Singapore Airlines and All Nippon Airways. Both are Star Alliance carriers Velocity can book on partner award redemption. ANA business class from Australia to Japan sits at 82,000 Velocity Points one way with modest fees, one of the more accessible premium redemptions on the Australian market. Singapore Airlines business class to Asia is bookable through Velocity directly, and Velocity Points can transfer to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer for expanded cabin access on the same aircraft.

Velocity's other partner list includes Etihad, Qatar Airways (on economy), United Airlines, Air Canada, and Hawaiian Airlines. That footprint is narrower than Qantas Oneworld reach, but it covers the routes most Australian leisure travellers actually want (Southeast Asia, Japan, the US West Coast).

Where Velocity is weaker: partner premium redemption inventory on Singapore Airlines and ANA can be spotty in advance (ANA availability typically improves in the 14-day pre-departure window), Star Alliance reach into Europe is thinner than Qantas Oneworld options, and international first class awards on Velocity are limited to a handful of Singapore Airlines routes where seats appear infrequently.

Credit-card earn stack into Velocity Points in Australia:

• Amex Membership Rewards (any Amex earning MR, including personal Gold and Explorer): transfer to Velocity at 2:1.
• ANZ Rewards, NAB Rewards, MyCard Rewards, BOQ Q Rewards: manual transfer to Velocity, auto transfer available on ANZ and NAB.
• Virgin Australia Velocity co-brand cards (Virgin Money Velocity, ANZ Rewards Black with Velocity transfer): direct-earn Velocity Points.
• CommBank Yello from 1 October 2026: everyday banking activity converts to Velocity Points.

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner and stack Velocity earn. Agoda on ShopBack covers Booking.com, Agoda, and Hotels.com with cashback on qualifying stays. Cashback layers on top of your Velocity credit card earn.

American Express Membership Rewards: the flexible pivot

Amex Membership Rewards is not an airline currency in itself. It is a flexible points program that transfers to 16 airline partners and four hotel partners globally. In Australia the practical stack is:

• Qantas Frequent Flyer at 2:1 for Ascent Premium enrolled cardholders (Platinum Charge and Centurion). Verify enrolment before assuming access.
• Velocity Frequent Flyer at 2:1 for all Australian Amex cardholders earning Membership Rewards.
• Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at 2:1 for Ascent Premium.
• Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Malaysia Airlines Enrich, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club now at 3:1 or worse post 15 December 2025.

The Membership Rewards program is available on the Amex Platinum Charge Card, Amex Explorer, Amex Gold Card, Amex Business Explorer, Amex Business Gold, Amex Business Platinum, and a handful of co-brand cards that opt into MR earning. Membership Rewards Ascent Premium is the higher tier reserved for Platinum Charge and Centurion Card Members, and it is the tier that unlocks the better transfer ratios to Qantas, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and select other partners.

Practical rules of thumb for Membership Rewards in 2026:

1. Keep points parked in MR until you have a specific reward seat in mind. Transfers are one way and irreversible. There is no benefit to pre-transferring a stockpile.
2. Transfer when a transfer bonus is running or a specific seat is confirmed available. Amex runs periodic transfer bonuses to Velocity and other partners of 15% to 20%, and these are the moments to move points.
3. If you are Ascent Premium, Qantas at 2:1 is a genuine option. Outside Ascent Premium, Qantas transfer is not available from personal Membership Rewards.
4. Velocity at 2:1 is available to all MR earners. That makes Velocity the default Australian airline transfer for personal Amex Gold and Explorer holders.
5. Book paid flights and hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner while you are stockpiling MR points. Cashback lands as usable dollars while your points balance grows.

Activate cashback via ShopBack before your next hotel booking. Booking.com on ShopBack shows the cashback rate alongside the price. Compare Booking.com, Agoda, and Hotels.com in one view.

The 2026 credit-card-to-airline stack, decision tree

For most Australian points collectors in 2026, the decision tree is:

If you fly Qantas domestically and internationally more than five times a year:

• Home currency: Qantas Frequent Flyer.
• Primary card: Qantas American Express Ultimate or Qantas American Express Premium (direct-earn Qantas Points on Amex spend).
• Secondary card: An Amex Platinum Charge if you want Membership Rewards Ascent Premium flexibility, or a Qantas bank co-brand card (NAB, ANZ, Westpac) for everyday spend outside Amex acceptance.

If you fly Virgin Australia domestically and Asia in premium cabins:

• Home currency: Velocity Frequent Flyer.
• Primary card: Virgin Money Velocity High Flyer or Amex Explorer earning Membership Rewards then transferring to Velocity at 2:1.
• Secondary card: CommBank Yello enrolment from 1 October 2026 for banking-based Velocity earn.

If you want maximum flexibility and are unsure of your home currency:

• Home currency: Amex Membership Rewards (Ascent Premium if you can carry Platinum Charge).
• Transfer target: Velocity for domestic and Asia (economy and business), Qantas for Oneworld premium international if Ascent Premium enrolled.
• Book hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner for cashback while you stockpile.

If you mostly fly economy domestically:

• Home currency: Velocity Frequent Flyer.
• Rationale: cheaper domestic economy tier (5,900 to 9,900 points) beats Qantas Classic Reward on trunk routes.
• Card: Any Amex earning Membership Rewards (Gold, Explorer, Platinum) transferring to Velocity at 2:1, or a Virgin Money Velocity direct-earn card.

Where ShopBack fits into the points stack

ShopBack does not compete with Qantas, Velocity, or Amex. It complements them. The mechanic is straightforward:

• Points earn happens on the credit card behind the booking (Qantas via a Qantas Amex, Velocity via an ANZ or Amex, MR via any Amex).
• Cashback happens through ShopBack when you click through to the booking site (Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com, Klook) before checkout.
• Hotel loyalty points happen when you match your Marriott Bonvoy, Accor Live Limitless, or Hilton Honors number at check-in.

All three earn stacks can layer on the same booking. Cashback via ShopBack becomes usable AUD paid to your account; points and miles sit in your airline or hotel program for future redemption.

Practical utility examples:

• Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner and earn cashback on top of your Qantas or Velocity earn on Booking.com, Agoda, and Hotels.com bookings. Cashback stacks with airline points on the card behind the booking.
• Activate cashback via ShopBack before earning miles on eligible partners (car hire, activities, tours) via Klook, Rentalcars, and Booking.com Experiences.
• ShopBack Snaps is available in the ShopBack mobile app for eligible receipts. Snaps is Australia-only and delivered through the ShopBack app.

Plan your next trip with ShopBack Travel Planner. Virgin Australia Flights on ShopBack surfaces cashback rates alongside price on hotels, flights, activities, and car hire from ShopBack partners.

When to move points, and when to sit tight

The default is sit tight. Airline points balances lose optionality the moment you transfer them out of Membership Rewards. There is no yield on holding, but there is no downside either beyond the risk of an unannounced devaluation. The 15 December 2025 Amex devaluation gave 90 days of public notice before rates changed, which is the pattern most Australian programs follow.

Move points when one of these is true:

• A specific reward seat is confirmed available on the exact route and date you need.
• A transfer bonus is running that materially improves the ratio (Velocity has run 15% and 20% bonuses on manual and auto transfers).
• Your Membership Rewards balance is at risk (Amex account closing, downgrading, or annual fee decision that removes MR earning).

Do not move points because:

• You have a large balance and want to feel productive.
• A partner airline announces a fare sale (this is a paid-fare event, not a reward-seat event).
• You read a generic points article suggesting a partner is undervalued (undervalued means nothing without a specific redemption plan).

What to check before every transfer

Before hitting the transfer button on Amex, ANZ, NAB, or CommBank rewards, run this five-step check:

1. Reward seat availability confirmed on the airline site or via a search tool (SeatSpy, Point.me, ExpertFlyer) for your exact date and cabin.
2. Transfer ratio confirmed on the source program's website (2:1 Amex MR to Velocity, 2:1 Amex MR to Qantas for Ascent Premium, verify others).
3. Transfer time confirmed (48 hours is standard for most partners, longer for some). Do not transfer if your seat is available today and might not be tomorrow.
4. Minimum transfer amount confirmed (1,000 points is standard, 500 for Qantas from Amex, 250 for JetBlue from Amex).
5. Taxes and carrier charges confirmed on the reward seat (some partner premium redemptions carry AUD 400 to AUD 800+ in carrier charges, particularly British Airways and Cathay Pacific from Australia).

Any figure or ratio in this article is current at date of publication. Airline programs change award charts, transfer ratios, and taxes without regular notice. Verify on the primary program site before making an irreversible transfer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Amex Membership Rewards to Qantas transfer ratio in Australia in 2026? Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to Qantas Frequent Flyer at a 2:1 ratio for cardholders enrolled in Membership Rewards Ascent Premium (Platinum Charge and Centurion). Transfers are one way, generally take up to 48 hours, and typically require a minimum of 500 Amex points. Verify the current rate on americanexpress.com/au before you transfer.

Does Amex Membership Rewards transfer to Velocity in Australia in 2026? Velocity Frequent Flyer is a 2:1 transfer partner from Amex Membership Rewards in Australia. That ratio held through the 15 December 2025 devaluation. Transfers are one way and generally take up to 48 hours.

Is Qantas or Velocity a better frequent flyer program for Australians? Qantas Frequent Flyer wins on network breadth, Oneworld partner reach (British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, American Airlines), and premium international redemptions. Velocity wins on cheaper domestic economy seats (from 5,900 points on lead-in routes since October 2024), Singapore Airlines and ANA Star Alliance access, and simpler earning through the CommBank Yello tie-up from 1 October 2026. The right home currency depends on where you fly and how often.

Should I keep points in Amex Membership Rewards or transfer them to Qantas or Velocity? Keep points parked in Amex Membership Rewards until you have a specific redemption in mind. Amex points earn no interest and no bonus for sitting, but transferring them to an airline is one way and irreversible. Only transfer when a specific reward seat is available or a transfer bonus is running.

Which Amex cards earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points directly in Australia? The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card, Qantas American Express Discovery, and Qantas American Express Premium Card earn Qantas Points directly, bypassing the Membership Rewards program. Direct-earn Qantas Amex cards are the shortest path to Qantas Points if you know Qantas is your home currency. Ultimate reward flexibility sits with Membership Rewards Ascent Premium cards, at the cost of the 2:1 transfer ratio.

When does the Velocity Commonwealth Bank partnership start in October 2026? From 1 October 2026, eligible CommBank Yello customers can convert points earned on savings accounts, home loans, insurance, and credit cards into Velocity Points. Commonwealth Bank has more than nine million Yello customers, so this materially widens the Velocity earn base outside frequent-flyer credit cards. Terms and eligibility apply, verify current details on velocityfrequentflyer.com.

Can I earn Qantas or Velocity points on hotel bookings through ShopBack? Yes. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner and earn cashback on top of your airline points earn. Book Booking.com, Agoda, or Hotels.com via ShopBack, then match your loyalty account (Marriott Bonvoy, Accor Live Limitless, or Hilton Honors) at check-in for hotel points as well. ShopBack cashback stacks with credit card points and hotel loyalty points on eligible bookings.

Where do Qantas Points redeem best in 2026? Business class to Southeast and Northeast Asia from 72,000 to 108,000 Qantas Points on Qantas metal or partners, Jetstar domestic flights from 5,700 points one way plus taxes and carrier charges, and SYD to JNB or SYD to DFW on Qantas or American Airlines partner metal in premium cabins. Availability opens 355 days out at Australian midnight for Qantas metal.

Are Velocity Points sweet spots strongest for Asia in 2026? Domestic economy seats from 5,900 to 9,900 points depending on route and demand tier, ANA business class to Japan from 82,000 Velocity Points with low fees, and Singapore Airlines business class to Asia via Velocity or by transferring Velocity to KrisFlyer for better cabin access. Velocity seat pricing tiers domestic at 6,200, 7,800, and 9,900 points on many routes.
