Optus vs Telstra vs Vodafone Roaming: Australia 2026

Updated: September 2026

Short verdict: Vodafone $5 Roaming is the cheapest daily pass for eligible Vodafone Infinite, Plus and Infinite Data plans at $5 per day across 100+ destinations. Optus matches $5 per day but only on Choice Plus, and other Optus postpaid plans pay $10 per day. Telstra International Day Pass costs $5 in Zone 1 and $10 in Zone 2 with the broadest published country list at 80-plus destinations. On trips longer than about a week where you don't need your Australian number for calls, an Airalo or Holafly eSIM is usually cheaper still.

Before you buy any day pass or eSIM, plan the trip end-to-end via Booking.com via ShopBack so you compare hotels, flights, and activities in one place while cashback stacks on eligible bookings. If you're new to ShopBack, it's a cashback and rewards platform that pays you back on purchases from 2,000+ Australian retailers including Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com, Qantas, and Jetstar. The three-carrier roaming market in Australia

Optus, Telstra, and Vodafone are Australia's three national mobile network operators, and they've each landed on a distinct roaming pricing model in 2026. Telstra runs a fixed-fee International Day Pass tied to zones. Vodafone runs a flat $5 daily add-on across a large but curated country list, with a 90-day cap per calendar year. Optus splits its pricing by plan tier, with Choice Plus customers paying $5 per day and other postpaid plans paying $10 per day.

That structure matters because your best carrier depends less on brand loyalty than on which plan you're already on and where you're actually going. A Vodafone Infinite customer heading to Japan pays $5 per day for full inclusions. A Telstra customer heading to the same destination pays $5 per day for Zone 1 with 2GB per day. An Optus customer on a non-Choice plan heading to Japan pays $10 per day for 1GB. Same trip, three different bills.

Layered on top of the carrier day-pass market is the eSIM alternative. Airalo and Holafly have grown into the two most common Australian-traveller picks, and their pricing structure is fundamentally different: pay once for a data pack, keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and SMS. On trips beyond a few days, the eSIM math almost always wins on cost, but at the tradeoff of managing two profiles on your phone.

Optus Roaming: $5 or $10 depending on plan

Optus's international roaming pricing in 2026 is tiered by plan. Choice Plus customers pay $5 per day and get 5GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts. If you burn through the 5GB within 24 hours, Optus auto-adds a second 5GB pack for another $5, so heavy-data days can hit $10 rather than throttling. Other Optus postpaid customers pay $10 per day for a smaller 1GB allowance plus unlimited calls and texts.

Where Optus roaming wins: if you're already on Choice Plus, the 5GB daily inclusion is generous and enough for most travellers who aren't streaming video constantly. The auto-top-up mechanic means you won't get cut off mid-day if you miscalculate usage. Coverage spans most mainstream Asia-Pacific, European, and North American destinations that Australian travellers actually go to.

Where Optus roaming is weaker: the $10 per day tier for non-Choice postpaid plans is expensive compared to Vodafone $5 Roaming for the same coverage. Prepaid Optus SIMs don't get the same day-pass treatment, so prepaid travellers should default to an eSIM. And if you're heading to an edge-case country, Telstra's published Zone 2 list tends to be broader.

Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout on your travel bookings so the day-pass cost is partially offset by savings elsewhere in the trip. On a 10-day trip that means the roaming spend is roughly $50 to $100 on Optus, and equivalent-value cashback on hotels and flights can cover most of that.

Telstra International Day Pass: broadest coverage, zone-based pricing

Telstra's International Day Pass splits the world into two zones. Zone 1 destinations include New Zealand, the United States, much of Europe, Hong Kong, China, Japan, India, and Indonesia at $5 per day. Zone 2 covers 80-plus destinations at $10 per day, including many secondary European markets and additional Asian and Latin American countries. Every day pass gives you unlimited calls and texts within the pass period plus 2GB of data.

The Telstra structure has two virtues. First, you only get charged on days you actually use your phone overseas, so a day of transit with your phone in airplane mode doesn't cost you a pass. Second, the country list is the broadest of the three carriers, which matters if your itinerary includes secondary markets that Optus and Vodafone treat as pay-per-MB.

Where Telstra is weaker: the $10 Zone 2 rate is the highest headline price of any Australian carrier day pass, and the 2GB daily allowance is thinner than Optus Choice Plus (5GB) if you're a heavy data user. Roll-over doesn't apply, so unused daily data is gone at the end of the pass period.

For travel planning that stacks against Telstra roaming costs, compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking so the trip's cashback offsets a chunk of the carrier bill. On a 14-day European trip with a Zone 2 destination, Telstra day-pass spend is roughly $70 to $140, and equivalent cashback on hotel and flight bookings typically covers a large share.

Vodafone $5 Roaming: cheapest headline, 90-day cap

Vodafone $5 Roaming is Australia's cheapest carrier day-pass headline at $5 per day across 100-plus destinations, with a 90-day cap per calendar year. It works on Vodafone Infinite, Plus and Infinite Data plans, and it uses your existing plan's data, call, and text inclusions rather than adding a separate quota. That mechanic matters: if your Vodafone plan already has generous domestic data, $5 Roaming effectively extends that entitlement overseas.

Where Vodafone wins: for eligible plan holders travelling to major corridors (New Zealand, UK, Europe, US, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and dozens more), it's the lowest cash price of any Australian carrier. The 100+ country list is broader than Optus's mainstream coverage. And because you're using your existing plan inclusions, there's no need to think about GB caps mid-trip if your home plan is generous.

Where Vodafone is weaker: the 90-day annual cap can bite frequent travellers or someone on a long stint abroad. Modem plans and some legacy plans are excluded. And destinations outside the eligible country list revert to standard pay-per-MB roaming rates, which can escalate fast. Always confirm your destination on vodafone.com.au/roaming before you fly.

Book flights via ShopBack partners (e.g., Qantas, Jetstar, Cathay Pacific) to earn cashback that offsets your Vodafone roaming spend, then compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner to layer cashback on accommodation. On a 20-day trip, Vodafone $5 Roaming totals $100, and a properly-stacked ShopBack booking often generates several times that in cashback on hotels and flights combined.

eSIM alternative: Airalo and Holafly

Airalo and Holafly are the two eSIM apps Australians default to in 2026. The core value proposition is the same across both: data-only mobile connectivity via a downloadable eSIM profile, priced per country or region, with no need to swap physical SIMs or lose your Australian number.

Airalo pricing lands around AU$4 to AU$5 for 1 to 2GB on short trips, with unlimited-style regional packs starting near AU$11 for 3 days and climbing to roughly AU$70 for 30 days. Airalo also lets you top up mid-trip without installing a new eSIM profile. Coverage spans 200+ destinations, and pricing is competitive on mainstream and secondary markets alike.

Holafly pricing starts near US$6.90 for a 1-day unlimited pack and drops toward US$3 per day on longer 30-day passes. Holafly's headline feature is unlimited data with day-based rather than GB-based caps, which suits travellers who worry about running out mid-trip. The tradeoff is that if your Holafly pack expires early, you need to buy a new one rather than topping up.

The math against carrier day-passes: on a 10-day European trip, Vodafone $5 Roaming totals $50 and Telstra Zone 2 totals $100, versus a mid-tier Airalo pack landing around $20 to $30 or a Holafly unlimited 10-day pack around US$40 to $50. The eSIM wins on cost unless you specifically need your Australian number for calls and SMS at the destination.

Dual-SIM handling: modern iPhones and most flagship Androids support one physical SIM plus one eSIM (or two eSIMs). Keep your Australian carrier SIM active for calls and OTPs, add the Airalo or Holafly eSIM for data. That combo often lands cheaper than any carrier day pass while preserving your Australian number for banking codes and important calls.

When each option wins

• Vodafone Infinite / Plus / Infinite Data customer heading to Japan, UK, US, NZ, or major EU? Vodafone $5 Roaming is the cheapest carrier route at $5 per day, uses your existing plan's inclusions, and covers 100+ destinations.
• Optus Choice Plus customer with heavy data needs? Optus $5 per day with 5GB is generous, and the auto-top-up mechanic protects heavy-data days from cutting off mid-use.
• Telstra customer or heading to an edge-case country? Telstra's Zone 1 ($5) and Zone 2 ($10) day pass has the broadest published country list of the three.
• Long trip (14+ days) where you don't need your Australian number for calls? An Airalo or Holafly eSIM saves substantially versus any carrier day pass.
• Multi-country itinerary spanning 3+ regions? A regional Airalo pack or Holafly unlimited pack is usually cheaper and less hassle than daily zone-switching on a carrier pass.
• Short 3-to-4-day trip where you need your Australian number active? Any carrier $5 day pass is roughly break-even with an eSIM, so pick the one your existing plan supports without extra setup.

Setup and activation checklist

Regardless of which route you pick, do these before you fly:

• Confirm your specific plan is eligible for the carrier's day pass. Vodafone $5 Roaming requires Infinite, Plus or Infinite Data. Optus $5 requires Choice Plus. Telstra Day Pass requires an eligible postpaid plan.
• Enable international roaming in your carrier app before you leave Australian soil, because activation from overseas can hit delays or require support calls.
• Check your destination's zone (Telstra) or eligibility (Optus, Vodafone) on the carrier's official page. Zones and eligible-country lists change.
• If using an eSIM, install and test the profile at home a few days before departure. Airalo and Holafly both let you install without activating, so you can validate the profile installs correctly on your phone.
• Save the carrier's international roaming support number in your contacts, because in-app chat can be slow when you're mid-transit.

Data usage: how much do you actually need?

Rough daily data benchmarks in 2026:

• Maps and messaging only: 100 to 300MB per day
• Adds social scrolling and light photo sharing: 500MB to 1GB per day
• Adds video calls, streaming music, and heavy web browsing: 2 to 4GB per day
• Adds video streaming or hotspot for laptop: 5GB-plus per day

Vodafone $5 Roaming uses your plan inclusion, so if you have a big domestic quota (say 200GB per month) you likely won't feel constrained. Optus Choice Plus $5 gives 5GB per day. Telstra Day Pass gives 2GB per day. Non-Choice Optus at $10 gives 1GB per day. Match those to your actual usage patterns to see where the caps might bite.

For most leisure travellers who use Wi-Fi at hotels and restaurants, 1 to 2GB per day of cellular data is enough. For travellers hotspotting to a laptop or streaming heavily on cellular, an unlimited eSIM (Holafly) or high-cap Airalo pack removes the mental overhead of cap-watching.

Country-by-country: which option wins where

The right answer changes by destination. Here's how the three carriers and the eSIM alternative typically stack for the most common Australian outbound corridors in 2026.

New Zealand. All three carriers include NZ in their day-pass country lists (Vodafone $5, Optus $5 on Choice Plus or $10 otherwise, Telstra Zone 1 at $5). NZ is also one of the cheapest Airalo local markets, with 5GB packs around AU$8 to AU$12 for a week. For a short 3-to-5-day Auckland or Queenstown trip, the carrier day pass ties with the eSIM on cost and wins on convenience because you keep your Australian number active.

United Kingdom. UK is Vodafone $5 territory, Optus mainstream, and Telstra Zone 1 at $5. Airalo UK packs are competitive, and Holafly UK unlimited runs about US$27 for a week. For a 10-day London trip, Vodafone $5 Roaming ($50) is the cheapest carrier route. An Airalo 10GB UK pack runs around AU$25 to AU$30, which is a lower headline but leaves you without your Australian number for calls.

Continental Europe multi-country. This is where zones matter. Telstra Zone 2 hits many secondary European destinations at $10 per day. Vodafone's 100+ list catches most primary Western European markets but check secondary Eastern European stops. For a 14-day multi-country European itinerary, an Airalo Europe regional pack (typically AU$40 to AU$60 for 10GB across 39 countries) is often the cleanest choice.

United States. All three carriers list the US in their day-pass programs. Telstra Zone 1 at $5, Vodafone $5, Optus $5 or $10 depending on plan. Airalo US local eSIMs are competitive and Holafly US unlimited runs about US$34 for a week. For a two-week US trip, the carrier day pass totals $70 to $140, while an Airalo 10GB US pack lands around AU$25 to AU$35.

Japan. Japan is a Zone 1 destination on Telstra ($5), included in Vodafone $5, and mainstream Optus. Japan is also one of the most competitive Airalo markets, with local 5GB packs around AU$15 to AU$20. For a 7-to-10-day Japan trip, either the Vodafone $5 Roaming or a Japan-local Airalo pack works well, and the choice comes down to whether you need Japanese-carrier network priority (eSIM often runs on SoftBank or NTT Docomo) or your Australian number active for calls back home.

Southeast Asia (Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia). Vodafone $5 lists most Southeast Asian corridors. Telstra Zone 1 covers Indonesia and mainstream Southeast Asia at $5. Optus mainstream coverage applies. Southeast Asia is where local eSIMs from Airalo are especially cheap, often AU$5 to AU$10 for a week of 3 to 5GB. On a 10-day Bali or Bangkok trip, the eSIM math is decisive if you don't need calls.

China and Hong Kong. Telstra Zone 1 includes both at $5. Vodafone and Optus include mainland China with plan caveats. Airalo China packs work but note that mainland China's Great Firewall applies to some local eSIMs, and a Hong Kong or global eSIM is often the workaround. If you plan to use Western apps in mainland China, a carrier day pass or a global eSIM with roaming (which routes through non-mainland networks) is typically the safer setup.

India. Telstra Zone 1 at $5. Vodafone $5 destination. Optus mainstream. Airalo India packs are very cheap, often under AU$10 for a week. India is a case where either the carrier day pass or the eSIM works, and the choice depends on whether you need your Australian number active.

Roaming for business travellers

For Australian business travellers, the calculus tilts more toward carrier day passes than for leisure trips. The reason is call reliability: your clients, colleagues, and internal systems know your Australian mobile number. Missing calls or SMS OTPs for expense-management systems, MFA logins, or corporate banking can cost more than the day-pass premium.

If your employer reimburses roaming as a travel expense (which many do), the marginal cost of $5 to $10 per day is trivial against the productivity risk of an unreachable number. In that case, Vodafone $5 Roaming (if you're on an eligible plan) or Telstra Zone 1 at $5 is the default. Zone 2 destinations push Telstra to $10, still cheap for a working traveller.

Where business travellers benefit from the eSIM route: extended trips of 3 weeks or more where cellular data spend dominates. In those cases, a dual-SIM setup (Australian carrier day pass for a couple of days at start and end for OTPs and calls, then a data-only eSIM for the middle stretch) captures both worlds.

Roaming for backpackers and long-stay travellers

For backpackers on a 3-to-6-month trip, no carrier day pass makes sense because the $5 per day math becomes $450 to $900 quickly. Vodafone's 90-day annual cap explicitly rules out this profile. Airalo regional packs and Holafly long-duration unlimited passes are the default here.

The setup: keep your Australian carrier SIM active on the cheapest possible plan (a low-tier prepaid or a plan pause if your carrier offers one) to preserve your Australian number for banking and identity purposes, and run all data through a series of Airalo local or regional eSIMs across your itinerary. Holafly's 90-day unlimited packs can also work for a single-region long stint.

For a Southeast Asia backpacking loop, Airalo's regional Asia packs give you 39-country coverage on one profile, which removes the friction of installing a new local eSIM at every border crossing. For a Europe backpacking loop, the Airalo Eurolink regional pack is the equivalent play.

Roaming for cruise passengers

Cruise ship roaming is a separate category from land-based day passes. Ships operate their own maritime cellular networks, and standard carrier day passes typically do not apply on cruise ships. Rates are per-MB and high. If you're planning a cruise, treat onboard cellular as a use-only-if-you-must channel and rely on the ship's Wi-Fi for connectivity.

For shore excursions in port cities, whichever carrier or eSIM you've set up for the country the port is in kicks in normally. Confirm with your carrier whether Telstra Zone or Vodafone eligible-country classifications include the specific ports on your itinerary before you sail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest international roaming option in Australia in 2026? Vodafone $5 Roaming is the cheapest carrier day-pass in Australia at $5 per day for eligible Vodafone Infinite, Plus and Infinite Data plans, valid in 100+ destinations for up to 90 days per calendar year. Optus Choice Plus customers also pay $5 per day. Telstra International Day Pass sits at $5 for Zone 1 and $10 for Zone 2. An Airalo or Holafly eSIM often lands cheaper still on short trips, especially if you rely mostly on data.

How does Telstra International Day Pass work in 2026? Telstra International Day Pass costs $5 per day in Zone 1 and $10 per day in Zone 2, covering roughly 80 destinations across Europe, North America, and much of Asia. You only get charged on days you actually use the service overseas, and each day pass gives you 2GB of data plus unlimited talk and text within the day pass period. Confirm your destination's zone on telstra.com.au/international-roaming before you fly.

When is Vodafone $5 Roaming better than an eSIM? Vodafone $5 Roaming is better than an eSIM when you need to keep your Australian mobile number active for calls and SMS, when you're travelling to one of Vodafone's 100+ eligible destinations, and when your trip is under 90 days. Because it uses your existing plan's data, calls and texts, there's no separate top-up and no need to swap SIMs. For pure data-heavy trips or destinations outside the $5 country list, an Airalo or Holafly eSIM is usually cheaper.

Which Australian carrier has the best roaming coverage? Telstra International Day Pass has the broadest published country list at 80-plus destinations across two zones, and it wins for travellers heading to less common markets. Vodafone $5 Roaming lists 100-plus destinations but concentrates on major travel corridors. Optus roaming covers most mainstream Asia-Pacific, European, and North American destinations. If your itinerary includes a mix of Zone 2 or edge-case countries, Telstra tends to be the safest carrier bet.

Are eSIMs cheaper than Australian carrier roaming in 2026? For most trips over 7 days, yes. Airalo local eSIMs start around AU$4 to AU$5 for 1 to 2GB of data on short trips, with 30-day unlimited-style packs at roughly AU$70 to AU$75. Holafly unlimited eSIMs start from about US$6.90 per day, dropping to under US$3 per day on longer 30-day passes. Compared to $5 per day on Vodafone or Optus Choice Plus, an eSIM saves the most on trips over 7 days and where you don't need your Australian number active for calls.

Can I use Optus roaming on any plan? Not on the same terms. Optus Choice Plus customers get the $5 per day roaming rate with 5GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts, and Optus auto-adds another 5GB pack if you burn through the first within 24 hours. Other Optus postpaid plans get the $10 per day pass with 1GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts. Check your current plan on the Optus app before you fly because the tier difference doubles your daily cost.

Do prepaid Australian SIMs include international roaming? Most Australian prepaid mobile plans do not include international roaming as a default inclusion, and where it exists it's typically pay-per-use at high per-MB rates. If you're on prepaid and travelling, an Airalo or Holafly eSIM is nearly always cheaper than trying to bolt roaming onto a prepaid plan. Keep the prepaid SIM active for your Australian number and let the eSIM handle data at your destination.

Why is TPG Mobile not in this roaming comparison? TPG Mobile is a Vodafone-owned network brand under TPG Telecom and its roaming inclusions typically differ from Vodafone Australia's headline $5 Roaming. TPG prepaid and postpaid plans are worth checking directly on tpg.com.au before you travel, but for a direct three-way carrier comparison the Vodafone Australia $5 Roaming pack is the cleaner benchmark for the group.

Where do I earn cashback when planning international travel with ShopBack? Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking, then click through to Booking.com, Agoda, or Trip.com from shopback.com.au/travel to earn cashback on eligible bookings. Flights via ShopBack partners (e.g., Qantas, Jetstar, Cathay Pacific) can also earn cashback. Sign up at shopback.com.au/signup, activate the ShopBack browser extension before checkout, and cashback tracks on qualifying spend. Rate varies by merchant and campaign window.

Should I keep my Australian number active while roaming? Yes if you rely on Australian bank SMS one-time-passwords, MyGov codes, or business calls, because losing your number can lock you out of critical services mid-trip. Use a carrier day pass (Vodafone $5, Optus, or Telstra) for a few days at the start of your trip to receive OTPs and calls, then switch to a data-only Airalo or Holafly eSIM for the rest. Modern dual-SIM iPhones and Androids handle this split cleanly.

Does ShopBack cashback stack with manufacturer trade-in credits? Trade-in credits from Apple, Samsung, or other manufacturers are typically applied as a price reduction on the pre-cashback subtotal. The remaining paid amount is what ShopBack cashback tracks against. Confirm with the current ShopBack merchant page terms for the retailer.

Airalo vs Holafly: which eSIM is better for Australians in 2026? Airalo wins on flexibility (GB-based packs across 200+ destinations, top-up without reinstalling) and price for short trips, with packs from around AU$4 to AU$5 for 1 to 2GB. Holafly wins for heavy-data travellers who want unlimited data without cap-watching, starting around US$6.90 per day and dropping to under US$3 per day on 30-day passes. Airalo is the safer default for most Australians; Holafly suits streamers, hotspotters, and content creators.

How much does a Bali roaming setup cost for a week from Australia? For a 7-day Bali trip, Vodafone $5 Roaming totals $35, Telstra Zone 1 totals $35, and Optus Choice Plus totals $35 (or $70 on non-Choice plans). An Airalo Indonesia local pack runs about AU$5 to AU$10 for 3 to 5GB across the week, which is the cheapest overall if you don't need your Australian number active. Layer ShopBack cashback on your Bali hotel via Booking.com or Agoda to offset most of the roaming cost.

When do international flight and hotel prices drop on ShopBack? ShopBack cashback rates on Booking.com, Agoda, and Trip.com typically climb during Travel Tuesday (early December), January new-year travel push, and mid-year EOFY windows, often doubling or tripling the base rate for 48 to 72 hours. Flight cashback on Qantas and Jetstar spikes during airline sale weekends. Check shopback.com.au/travel weekly if you have flexible trip dates.

Does ShopBack Snaps work on Australian mobile bill payments? ShopBack Snaps is a receipt-scan cashback feature that runs on a rotating list of participating everyday grocery and consumables merchants, not on mobile carrier bill payments or plan sign-ups. For Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone plan sign-ups, use the standard online cashback flow via shopback.com.au if the retailer is a partner on the day.
