How to Stack ShopBack Cashback with Credit Card Rewards in Australia (2026)
ShopBack cashback and credit card rewards are two independent layers on the same purchase: ShopBack tracks the click, the card rewards the transaction. This guide shows the order of operations, which Westpac, CBA, ANZ, NAB and Amex cards earn what in 2026, what does not stack, and worked examples with the arithmetic.

How we picked. Card earn rates are taken from each issuer's published product page as of September 2026: Westpac Altitude Rewards Black, CommBank Ultimate, ANZ Rewards Black, NAB Rewards Platinum and American Express Explorer. Cashback mechanics are from ShopBack's own help centre. Last data check: 1 October 2026.
The bank and ShopBack are not fighting over the same dollar, which is the part most Australians get backwards. Your card issuer is paid by the merchant's bank for processing the transaction. ShopBack is paid by the merchant's marketing team for sending you to the store. Those are two different budgets, two different tracking systems, and two different payouts, so a single Woolworths online order can earn NAB Rewards points and ShopBack cashback at the same time. This guide explains how the two layers work, the exact order to do things in, which Australian cards earn what in 2026, what genuinely does not stack, and the arithmetic on real baskets.
The verdict
Click through ShopBack first, pay with your rewards card second, and both layers land on the same purchase. The only thing that breaks the stack is breaking the ShopBack click: an unlisted promo code, an ad blocker, or a detour through another site.
Card points are earned on the transaction and do not care how you arrived at the store. ShopBack cashback is earned on the click and does not care how you paid, except where a store's terms exclude a specific payment method. Keep those two facts in mind and everything else in this guide is detail.
Why are ShopBack cashback and card rewards independent?
Follow the money on one A$100 online order.
The card layer. When you pay, the merchant's bank pays your card issuer an interchange fee. Until 30 September 2026 the Reserve Bank of Australia capped consumer credit card interchange at 0.80 percent; from 1 October 2026 the cap is 0.30 percent, per Point Hacks' summary of the RBA's 2026 reform decision. Your issuer funds its points programme out of that fee plus annual fees and interest. The points are awarded for the transaction itself.
The ShopBack layer. Separately, the merchant runs an affiliate programme through a network. When ShopBack sends a shopper who buys, the merchant pays ShopBack a commission out of its marketing budget. ShopBack passes a share of that commission to you as cashback, calculated on the rate displayed on the store's ShopBack page and usually on the subtotal excluding shipping and GST. ShopBack's tracking and calculation guide states the order appears as Pending within 48 hours and confirms once the store validates it.
Because the two fees come from different parts of the merchant's cost base and are tracked by different systems (a cookie on your click versus the card network's transaction record), neither cancels the other. There is no setting on either side that says "this customer already got cashback, withhold the points."
What this also means: the RBA interchange cut squeezes the card layer, which is why the Big 4 have signalled lower earn rates on personal Visa and Mastercard products. It does not touch the ShopBack layer at all.
Which Australian cards earn what in 2026?
The brief answer is that no Big 4 bank publishes an "online shopping" bonus, so online retail earns the card's base rate. Groceries and travel are where category bonuses show up. Figures below are from each issuer's product page as of September 2026.
| Card | Everyday or base earn | Category bonuses | Annual fee | Published 2026 changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Westpac Altitude Rewards Black | 2 Altitude Points per A$1 on everyday spend; 1 point per A$1 on other purchases; 0.5 after A$10,000 in a statement cycle | 3 points per A$1 on international spend | A$295 card fee plus A$75 Altitude Rewards fee | Complimentary insurance changes from 1 October 2026 |
| CommBank Ultimate Awards | 0.5 (Yello), 0.75 (Yello Plus), 1 (Gold) or 1.5 (Diamond) Yello Points per A$1 on all other eligible transactions, uncapped | 2 points per A$1 international; 10.5 to 11.5 on flights and 20.5 to 21.5 on hotels and cars booked via CommBank Travel; 1.5 to 6.5 on Dine In Deals | A$35 per month; the A$4,000 spend waiver is removed from 1 January 2027 | Rates apply to new applications from 29 September 2026 |
| ANZ Rewards Black | 2 ANZ Reward Points per A$1 up to A$5,000 per statement period, then 1 point per A$1 | None published beyond the tier | A$375 (A$320 fee plus A$55 rewards fee) | Spend over A$50,000 per statement period earns no points from 28 October 2026 |
| NAB Rewards Platinum | 1.25 NAB Rewards Points per A$1 up to A$5,000 per calendar month, then 0.5, uncapped | Extra 0.75 points per A$1 on groceries, petrol and public transport, uncapped | A$195 | None published on the product page as of September 2026 |
| American Express Explorer | 2 Membership Rewards points per A$1 on eligible purchases; 1 point per A$1 on government spend | None published beyond the flat rate | Per Amex's card page | Amex is outside the RBA interchange cap |
| American Express Essential Rewards | 1 point per A$1 on everything else | 5 points per A$1 on eligible eats and drinks; 3 on selected streaming; 2 at selected major retailers | A$9 per month | Category earn structure as published by Amex |
Two notes on this table. First, the American Express Cashback credit card, which paid a flat 1 percent, is no longer available to new applicants, so there is no mainstream Australian cashback card to pair with ShopBack; the stack in Australia is cashback plus points. Second, points values differ: Altitude, Yello, ANZ Reward and NAB Rewards points convert to Qantas or Velocity at published ratios and are typically worth 0.5 to 1.5 cents each depending on redemption, while Amex Membership Rewards has transferred at 2 to 1 to Qantas Frequent Flyer and Velocity since the December 2025 change.
Which card for which category?
| Category | Best published earn in the table above | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Groceries (Woolworths, Coles online) | NAB Rewards Platinum: 1.25 plus 0.75 bonus = 2 points per A$1 | Only Big 4 card with a published grocery bonus |
| Online retail (Amazon Australia, The Iconic, JB Hi-Fi) | Westpac Altitude Black, ANZ Rewards Black or Amex Explorer at 2 points per A$1 | No online bonus exists; pick the highest base rate you hold |
| Travel booked direct with an OTA (Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia) | Westpac Altitude Black (3 points per A$1 if the merchant bills internationally) or your highest base card | Only CommBank's travel bonus requires booking through the bank's own portal, which bypasses ShopBack |
| Dining and takeaway | Amex Essential Rewards at 5 points per A$1 | Highest published category rate |
The CommBank travel bonus is the one trap. Its 10.5 to 21.5 points per A$1 only applies to bookings made through CommBank Travel Booking, and a booking made there is not a ShopBack click-through, so you would earn the big card bonus and no ShopBack cashback. For OTA bookings through ShopBack, use the card's base rate.
How do I stack them, step by step?
- Pick the card for the category. Groceries on the NAB card, general online retail on your 2-points-per-dollar card, and so on. This decision is independent of ShopBack.
- Start at ShopBack. Open the app, shopback.com.au, or the browser extension, search the store, and tap Shop Now. The tracking cookie is set at this click.
- Stay in the lane. Do not open another coupon site, click a retargeting advert, or edit the URL. ShopBack Australia lists each of those as actions that disable tracking.
- Use only codes listed on ShopBack. The card does not care which code you use. The store's affiliate terms do.
- Pay with the chosen card in the same session. The issuer sees a normal purchase at the merchant and awards points on the amount charged after any discount. ShopBack calculates cashback on the subtotal the store reports.
- Check both landed. ShopBack shows Pending within 48 hours. Points show on your next statement. If the ShopBack entry is missing after 48 hours, file a missing cashback report inside the store's submission window, which ShopBack Australia says is 30 days by default and 45, 50, 60 or 90 days for listed merchants.
What does not stack?
Honesty matters more than enthusiasm here, because the stacking myths are what generate rejected cashback.
- ShopBack cashback and the merchant's own loyalty programme. Everyday Rewards, Flybuys, Qantas Frequent Flyer earned at a retailer, hotel points: these are the store's own promotions. ShopBack does not claim that cashback stacks with them, and some stores exclude purchases paid with points or treat loyalty-linked offers as outside the affiliate commission. Check the Cashback Info section on the store's ShopBack page.
- ShopBack cashback and codes not listed on ShopBack. This is the single most common cause of a rejected order. A code from a coupon site or a newsletter that is not on the store's ShopBack page means the store attributes the sale elsewhere.
- ShopBack cashback and bank-portal bookings. CommBank Travel Booking, Westpac Altitude Travel and similar bank portals are their own channel. Booking through them earns the bank bonus and no ShopBack cashback.
- ShopBack cashback and excluded payment methods. ShopBack states some stores do not pay cashback on certain payment methods, listed in Cashback Info. If PayPal or a BNPL provider is excluded at that store, pay with the card directly.
- Two cashback sites on one order. Affiliate networks pay the last click. If you click ShopBack and then another cashback site, only the second one is paid.
What does stack without issue: ShopBack cashback, the card's points, a sale price, and a code listed on ShopBack. That is the full four-layer stack and it is routine.
Worked examples with the arithmetic
Illustrative ShopBack rates are used throughout; the actual rate is on each store's ShopBack page at the time of your click.
Example 1: A$250 weekly Woolworths online shop, NAB Rewards Platinum. Card layer: 2 NAB Rewards Points per A$1 (1.25 base plus 0.75 grocery bonus) = 500 points. At a conservative 0.6 cents per point that is about A$3. ShopBack layer at an illustrative 2 percent on A$250 = A$5. Total return: roughly A$8 on A$250, or 3.2 percent, where the card alone returned about 1.2 percent.
Example 2: A$1,400 laptop at JB Hi-Fi, Westpac Altitude Black. Card layer: 2 Altitude Points per A$1 = 2,800 points, worth about A$14 to A$28 depending on redemption. ShopBack layer at an illustrative 1.5 percent = A$21 in cash, Pending within 48 hours, Confirmed after the return window. Total: A$35 to A$49 back on one purchase.
Example 3: A$2,200 Booking.com hotel for a Gold Coast trip, ANZ Rewards Black. Card layer: 2 ANZ Reward Points per A$1 on the first A$5,000 of the statement period = 4,400 points. ShopBack layer at an illustrative 4 percent = A$88, Pending until after check-out, then Confirmed. If you had instead booked through a bank travel portal for a higher card bonus, the A$88 would be zero. Run the numbers both ways before you book.
Example 4: The same A$2,200 hotel with a 10 percent code from a random coupon blog. You save A$220 at checkout, the card still awards points on A$1,980, and ShopBack Australia states it cannot track cashback on an unlisted code, so the A$88 becomes A$0. If the same 10 percent code is listed on the store's ShopBack page, you keep the discount, the points, and cashback on A$1,980 (A$79.20 at the illustrative rate).
Where this works best
- Households that already route groceries online. The NAB grocery bonus plus ShopBack on Woolworths or Coles online is the easiest recurring stack in Australia.
- Big-ticket electronics and furniture. A single large JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys order at a 2-points-per-dollar card plus ShopBack cashback is where the dollars get noticeable.
- Travel booked direct with the OTA. Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia and Trip.com all sit in ShopBack's Australian catalogue; stacking the card's base points with OTA cashback usually beats a bank-portal bonus once you do the maths.
- Minimum-spend hunters. Spend routed through ShopBack partner stores counts toward a card's sign-up bonus minimum spend and earns cashback at the same time.
FAQ
How does stacking ShopBack cashback with a credit card actually work?
They are two separate systems that never talk to each other. ShopBack earns an affiliate commission from the store for sending you there and shares part of it as cashback; that layer depends on the click. Your card issuer earns interchange from the merchant on the transaction and shares part of it as points or cashback; that layer depends on the payment. Click through ShopBack, pay with the card, and both fire on the same purchase.
What is the correct order of operations to stack ShopBack and card rewards?
Choose the card first, then click through ShopBack to the store, add items, apply only codes listed on ShopBack, and pay with the chosen card in the same browser session. The only step that is order-sensitive is the ShopBack click: it has to be the last referral before checkout.
Which Australian credit card earns the most on online shopping in 2026?
None of the Big 4 publish an online-shopping bonus category, so online retail earns each card's base rate: 2 Altitude Points per A$1 on everyday spend on Westpac Altitude Black, 2 ANZ Reward Points per A$1 up to A$5,000 a statement on ANZ Rewards Black, 1.25 NAB Rewards Points per A$1 up to A$5,000 a month on NAB Rewards Platinum, and 0.5 to 1.5 Yello Points per A$1 on CommBank Ultimate depending on Yello tier. American Express Explorer earns 2 Membership Rewards points per A$1. Figures are from each issuer's published card page as of September 2026.
Is ShopBack cashback worth more than credit card points on the same purchase?
Often, yes, because cashback is paid in dollars with no redemption step, while points are worth roughly 0.5 to 1.5 cents each depending on how you redeem. A card earning 1 point per dollar returns about 0.5 to 1.5 percent of spend; a ShopBack rate in the low single digits at a partner store can match or beat that in cash. The point is you do not have to choose: both layers apply to the same order.
Is a cashback credit card better than a points card for stacking with ShopBack?
For simplicity, yes, but the choice is rare in Australia. The American Express Cashback card is no longer open to new applicants, and the Big 4 do not issue a true cashback card. Most Australians stack ShopBack with a points card, which works just as well; the card layer simply arrives as points rather than dollars.
When do the two rewards arrive?
Card points post with the statement, usually within a month. ShopBack cashback shows as Pending within 48 hours and confirms once the store's return window closes, typically a few weeks for retail and after the trip for travel. You can withdraw Confirmed Cashback of A$10 or more to an Australian bank account or PayPal within 10 working days.
When do the RBA interchange changes affect my card rewards?
From 1 October 2026 the Reserve Bank of Australia cut the cap on consumer credit card interchange fees from 0.80 percent to 0.30 percent, per Point Hacks' summary of the RBA decision. The major banks have signalled lower earn rates on personal Visa and Mastercard rewards products as a result; ANZ, for example, introduces a A$50,000 per statement points cap from 28 October 2026. American Express runs a closed-loop network and is not subject to the cap. ShopBack cashback is funded by store commissions, not interchange, so it is unaffected.
Can I stack ShopBack with Everyday Rewards, Flybuys or Qantas Frequent Flyer at the store?
Scan your store loyalty card if you want to, but do not count on ShopBack cashback stacking with a merchant's own loyalty programme. Loyalty points are the store's own promotion and some stores treat them, or purchases made with points, as outside the affiliate commission. Check the Cashback Info section on the store's ShopBack page for exclusions. ShopBack never promises that cashback stacks with store loyalty schemes.
Does paying with PayPal or a buy-now-pay-later service break ShopBack cashback?
Sometimes. ShopBack states that some partner stores do not give cashback for certain payment methods, and lists those exclusions in the store's Cashback Info. If a store excludes PayPal or a BNPL provider, pay with the card directly. Paying with a card through a digital wallet such as Apple Pay still earns card points, but check the store page for any wallet exclusion on the ShopBack side.
What if I use a promo code I found on another website?
The card layer is unaffected, but ShopBack Australia states it cannot track cashback when you use a coupon or promo code that is not listed on ShopBack. The store's affiliate terms treat unlisted codes as a different marketing channel and the order is typically rejected. Use the codes on the store's ShopBack page and keep both layers.
Key takeaways
- Two budgets, two trackers, two payouts. Interchange funds the card points; the store's marketing commission funds ShopBack cashback. They do not offset.
- Order of operations: pick the card, click through ShopBack, use listed codes only, pay with the card, check both landed.
- Groceries: NAB Rewards Platinum publishes the only Big 4 grocery bonus (0.75 extra points per A$1). Online retail: base rate, so use your 2-points-per-dollar card. Travel: book the OTA through ShopBack, not the bank portal.
- Does not stack: merchant loyalty points, unlisted codes, bank travel portals, excluded payment methods, a second cashback site.
- 1 October 2026 RBA interchange cut (0.80 to 0.30 percent) trims card earn rates on Visa and Mastercard; Amex and ShopBack cashback are unaffected.
