How Can I Save on the Magnetic Island Ferry in 2026?
How to save on the Magnetic Island ferry from Townsville in 2026: the passenger catamaran and the vehicle ferry compared, walk-on and family fares, when a 10-trip MultiPass pays off, the Magnetic Saver vehicle fare, peak dates to avoid, and going through ShopBack before you book online.
New to ShopBack? ShopBack Australia is a free app and website that gives you part of your spend back as cash when you book through it. Going through ShopBack gets you a cash rebate on the same order, at the same store: sign up free, open Experience Oz, Direct Ferries or Klook from ShopBack, and book as normal.
How can I save on the Magnetic Island ferry?
The ferry fare you pay depends mostly on four things: whether you take a car, who is travelling, how many crossings you make and when you go. A routine that works for most trips:
- Walk on if you can. A walk-on adult return on Magnetic Island Ferries is $37 at the time of writing, while vehicle fares are priced separately and cost much more.
- Use the right fare type. The family fare covers 2 adults and up to 3 children. Students, pensioners, seniors and children have lower fares.
- Count your crossings. If you will make seven or more one-way walk-on trips in a year, a 10-trip MultiPass usually works out cheaper.
- Avoid peak dates. High season rates apply in Queensland school holidays and long weekends.
- Book online. Magnetic Island Ferries says to book online for the best walk-on rate, and its Magnetic Saver vehicle fare is online only.
- Go through ShopBack before you pay when you book the crossing or island activities on a site listed on ShopBack Australia.
Steps 1 to 5 find the lowest fare. Step 6 lowers what you actually end up paying for an online booking.
Magnetic Island ferry: the two services compared
Two ferry services run between Townsville and Magnetic Island: a fast passenger catamaran and a slower vehicle ferry that also takes walk-on passengers. According to Townsville North Queensland, the official regional tourism organisation, with terminal details from Magnetic Island Ferries and Experience Oz's ferry listing:
| SeaLink North Queensland | Magnetic Island Ferries | |
|---|---|---|
| What it carries | Passengers only | Vehicles and walk-on passengers |
| Crossing time | About 20 minutes | About 40 minutes |
| Services | 17 daily return services | Up to eight return trips a day |
| Townsville terminal | Breakwater Ferry Terminal, Sir Leslie Thiess Drive | 42 Ross Street, South Townsville |
| Island terminal | Nelly Bay | Nelly Bay |
The passenger catamaran is the quicker and more frequent option if you are walking on. The vehicle ferry is the only way to take a car, and it is also open to walk-on passengers, so it is worth comparing both for a foot passenger trip.
Magnetic Island Ferries describes the island as part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, with over 23 bays and beaches and 25 kilometres of walking trails.
Magnetic Island ferry in Australia 2026: walk-on fares
On Magnetic Island Ferries, a walk-on adult return is $37 and a family return is $90 at the time of writing. The operator's published walk-on fares:
| Ticket type | One way | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | $18.50 | $37 |
| Student (uni or 15 to 17 years) and Defence | $14 | $28 |
| Child (4 to 14 years) | $10.50 | $21 |
| Pensioner and Senior | $10.50 | $21 |
| Infant (0 to 3 years) | Free | Free |
| Family (2 adults and up to 3 children) | $45 | $90 |
Source: Magnetic Island Ferries' walk-on passenger pricing page. The operator's home page also advertises walk-on fares from $36 per adult return, and it says reduced rate walk-on fares remain available when you book online.
Parking. If you drive to the South Townsville terminal and leave the car, general parking is $9 a day, charged per calendar day, according to the operator.
The passenger catamaran. Experience Oz's listing for the Townsville to Magnetic Island return ferry transfer describes a high-speed catamaran taking about 20 minutes each way, departing the Breakwater Ferry Terminal from about 6.30am to about 6pm, with on-site parking at the terminal. Its return tickets are open dated for 6 months, so you do not need to pick a time when you book. Children are 5 to 14 on that listing, and under 5s travel free.
Magnetic Island ferry best deals in Australia 2026: where the savings are
The best deals on the Magnetic Island ferry are built into the fare structure: family fares, the MultiPass and the Magnetic Saver vehicle fare.
Family fare. For 2 adults and 3 children, the $90 family return is $47 less than five separate returns ($137). For 2 adults and 2 children, it is $26 less ($90 against $116).
MultiPass (walk-on, 10 trips). According to Magnetic Island Ferries:
- An adult MultiPass is $128, or $12.80 a trip, against $18.50 for a single adult fare. Child, pensioner and senior passes are $70 ($7 a trip) and student passes $90.50.
- It gives 10 one-way walk-on trips, valid for 12 months, with turn-up-and-go travel.
- Up to 2 passengers can travel together on one scan, which uses 2 trips.
- It is non-refundable, cannot be transferred, and seats depend on available space.
When it pays off: seven single adult trips cost $129.50, so the $128 adult pass is worth it from the seventh one-way trip. A couple making a return trip on two separate visits (8 trips) would pay $148 in single fares against $128 for the pass.
Magnetic Saver (vehicles). Magnetic Island Ferries says this is a reduced vehicle fare on selected, quieter sailings, around 25% less than the standard vehicle fare. Its own example shows a standard one-way sailing of $138 against $103.50 on a Magnetic Saver sailing. The key rules, according to the operator:
- The saving is built into the price when you book online; there is no code.
- It is online only, not available by phone or at the ticket counter.
- It covers vehicles up to 6.5 metres and up to 5 people, but not motorcycles or scooters.
- It cannot be combined with other discounts, and peak season rates apply in holidays.
- Bookings cannot be held as open tickets, and standard change and cancellation fees apply.
When Magnetic Island ferry fares are highest
Magnetic Island Ferries applies high season rates on its listed peak dates, which follow Queensland school holidays and long weekends. Its 2026 peak periods included January, the April school holidays and Anzac Day long weekend, the May Day long weekend, the June and July school holidays, and the September and October school holidays with the King's Birthday long weekend.
The next peak on the operator's list runs from 11 December 2026 through the Christmas and summer school holidays into January 2027. If your dates are flexible, travel before mid December or after the January school holidays, and pick quieter sailings.
Direct Ferries vs Experience Oz Magnetic Island ferry price comparison 2026
Neither is always cheaper; compare the same crossing, date and group on each, and look at the total. Here is what we could confirm at the time of writing.
| What to compare | Experience Oz | Direct Ferries | Klook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic Island listing | Townsville to Magnetic Island return ferry transfer, about 20 minutes each way, open-dated return valid for 6 months; also island tours, snorkelling and sunset cruises | Search the Townsville to Magnetic Island crossing for your date | Search Magnetic Island for tours and activities |
| ShopBack Terms to note | Bookings made in the Experience Oz app are not eligible, so book on the website; codes not featured on ShopBack are excluded | Codes not featured on ShopBack are excluded; only completed travel is eligible | Using any promo, coupon or discount code not featured on ShopBack makes the whole order ineligible; your Klook country of residence must match your ShopBack account |
| ShopBack page | Experience Oz | Direct Ferries | Klook |
Booking direct with the operator is also an option. Compare the fare on the operator's own site with the total on a booking site, and remember that booking through a site on ShopBack lowers your effective price after the trip.
Experience Oz, Direct Ferries and Klook for a Magnetic Island trip in Australia
All three have pages on ShopBack Australia, and the routine for booking is the same on each.
- Decide on walk-on or vehicle and how many crossings you need.
- Check the operator's own fares so you know the baseline.
- Search the same crossing or activity on Experience Oz, Direct Ferries or Klook, and compare the total for your group.
- Open the site you chose from ShopBack Australia, then book and pay in the same session. On Experience Oz, use the website rather than the app.
- Travel as booked. The ShopBack Terms say no-shows, and changes that create a new booking ID, are not eligible.
Other ways to book include going direct with SeaLink North Queensland or Magnetic Island Ferries, and other travel sites for island tours.
How ShopBack lowers what you pay for the trip
Going through ShopBack gets you a cash rebate on the same order, at the same store. It is a normal step in booking online, like checking a second site.
Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. Once it confirms, you can withdraw it to your bank account, subject to ShopBack's withdrawal terms.
How to do it, step by step:
- Open ShopBack Australia (app or website) and find the site: Experience Oz, Direct Ferries or Klook.
- Check the rate shown on that page and read the Terms.
- Tap through and book your ferry or island activity in that same session.
- The booking shows in your ShopBack account as pending, then confirms after your travel.
Working out what the trip really costs. Your effective price is what you pay minus the cash ShopBack returns.
Illustrative example only: if a family spends $300 on a ferry transfer and an island tour through a site on ShopBack at an illustrative rate of 4%, $12 would come back and the effective price would be $288; the live rate on the store's ShopBack page is the one that applies.
Planning the whole Magnetic Island trip
The ferry is one part of the cost; the same steps lower the rest of the trip. Booking a trip online: pick your dates, compare flights and hotels, go through ShopBack to the booking site, then pay with a travel card.
- Flights to Townsville. Fix your dates around the ferry's peak periods first, then compare flights.
- Where to stay. Staying on the island saves daily ferry fares if the island is the point of the trip; a mainland base near the terminal can suit day trips. Our guide to Queensland holiday packages for families covers more of the state.
- Island activities. Experience Oz lists Magnetic Island tours, snorkelling, koala encounters and sunset cruises. Compare them the same way as the ferry.

Promo codes and ShopBack together
- Promo codes. On Klook, the ShopBack Terms say using any promo, coupon or discount code not featured on ShopBack makes the whole order ineligible. Experience Oz and Direct Ferries exclude codes not featured on ShopBack. Usually the safest route is to read the Terms on the store's ShopBack page before you apply any code.
- Operator offers. The Magnetic Saver and MultiPass are sold by Magnetic Island Ferries on its own site. They are operator fares, so compare them with booking-site prices for your trip.
- Vouchers and credits. Gift card and voucher redemptions are excluded on these sites' ShopBack pages at the time of writing, and Klook Cash is excluded on Klook.
For the general rules, see our guide on how promotions and ShopBack work together.

Frequently asked questions
How can I save on the Magnetic Island ferry?

If you book through a site on ShopBack Australia, open it from ShopBack before you pay.
Which ferries go to Magnetic Island?
According to Townsville North Queensland, the official regional tourism body, two services run from Townsville. SeaLink North Queensland runs the passenger ferry, about 20 minutes with 17 daily return services. Magnetic Island Ferries runs the island's only car and passenger ferry, about 40 minutes with up to eight return trips a day.
How much is the Magnetic Island ferry?

Infants under 4 travel free. Vehicle fares are priced separately and quoted when you book.
Is there a family fare on the Magnetic Island ferry?

Is the Magnetic Island ferry MultiPass worth it?
It is if you will make at least seven one-way walk-on trips within 12 months. An adult MultiPass costs $128 for 10 trips, or $12.80 a trip, against $18.50 for a single adult fare. Two people can travel on one scan, using two trips. It is non-refundable, cannot be transferred and does not guarantee a seat.
What is the Magnetic Saver fare?
Magnetic Saver is a reduced vehicle fare on selected quieter sailings of Magnetic Island Ferries, around 25% less than the standard vehicle fare, according to the operator. It is applied automatically when you book online, with no code. It covers vehicles up to 6.5 metres and up to 5 people, cannot be combined with other offers, and peak season rates apply in holidays.
Should I take my car to Magnetic Island?
Only if you will use it a lot. A car gives you the freedom to reach quieter bays and trailheads, but the vehicle fare is far higher than walk-on fares. For a short stay, walking on and getting around the island another way usually costs less. If you do take the car, look for a Magnetic Saver sailing.
When are Magnetic Island ferry fares highest?

Is Direct Ferries or Experience Oz better for the Magnetic Island ferry?
It depends on what is listed for your date. At the time of writing, Experience Oz sold a Townsville to Magnetic Island return ferry transfer on a 20 minute catamaran from the Breakwater Ferry Terminal, with open-dated return tickets valid for 6 months. Search the same crossing on Direct Ferries and compare the total for your group before you book.
How does ShopBack help me save on a Magnetic Island trip?
Going through ShopBack gets you a cash rebate on the same order, at the same store. Before you book online with a site on ShopBack Australia, such as Experience Oz, Direct Ferries or Klook, open it from ShopBack and book in the same session. Part of what you spend comes back to your ShopBack account as cash after your travel.
Can I use a promo code and ShopBack on the same ferry booking?
Often not. Read the Terms on the store's ShopBack page before you apply any code.
