What Should I Check Before Paying Online in Australia in 2026?
What to check before you pay for an online order in Australia in 2026: the delivered price, a secure online payment method, the seller's details and returns policy, whether your discount code keeps the order eligible, and going through ShopBack before you check out at Amazon, Temu or Coles.
Published: 8 October 2026 · Author: Garry Shi, Cashback Expert, ShopBack Australia
Short answer. Before paying for an online order in Australia in 2026, check six things: the delivered price, a secure online payment on the store's own https checkout, a payment method that lets you dispute a charge, the seller's details and returns policy, whether your discount code keeps the order eligible, and that you went through ShopBack first. At Amazon Australia, Prime costs $9.99 a month or $79 a year after a 30-day trial, according to Amazon.
ShopBack Australia is a free app and website that gives you cash back on online orders at thousands of stores, including Amazon Australia, Temu and Coles. You open the store from ShopBack, shop as usual, and part of what you spend comes back to your ShopBack account. New members can join free at shopback.com.au/signup.
How we checked. We used Amazon Australia's Prime page, the Australian Business Register's ABN Lookup, public company information for Temu and Coles, Australian consumer law and tax basics, and the Terms on each store's ShopBack page, at the time of writing in October 2026. We do not list product prices or live codes, because they change daily.
The six-point check before you pay
Run these six checks on the order summary page, just before you tap Pay. Each one takes a few seconds.
| Check | What to look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Delivered price | Item price, delivery fee, any card or service fee | A cheaper sticker price can cost more once delivery is added |
| 2. The checkout address | Starts with https, padlock shown, the store's own domain | You are paying the store, not a copycat page |
| 3. Payment method | Card or payment service with a dispute option | You keep a way to get money back if something goes wrong |
| 4. Seller and returns | Seller name, ABN for Australian businesses, returns window | You know who to contact and what you can send back |
| 5. Discount code | Where the code came from, the Terms on the store's ShopBack page | Some codes can make the order ineligible for cash back |
| 6. ShopBack | You opened the store from ShopBack in this session | The order is tracked, so part of it comes back to you |
Check ShopBack before you check out. It is the one check you cannot fix after paying, because the store has to be opened from ShopBack before the order is placed.
Secure online payment: what to look for
A secure online payment in Australia is one made on the store's own https checkout, with a payment method that gives you a way to dispute the charge. Three things usually decide it.
- The address bar. The checkout page should start with https and show the store's own domain. Type the store's address yourself or open it from a trusted app, rather than following links in unexpected texts or emails.
- The payment method. Credit and debit cards let you ask your bank to dispute a charge. Through a chargeback, the bank that issued your card may be able to reverse a payment where goods did not arrive or were not as described, under the card schemes' rules. Ask your bank how its process works and how long you have to raise a dispute.
- Bank verification. Many Australian banks send a one-time code or an in-app approval for online card payments. Treat that prompt as a reason to double-check the store name and amount on screen.
Payment methods that usually leave you with fewer options: direct bank transfers, gift cards or crypto paid to a seller you do not know. Large stores such as Amazon Australia, Temu and Coles take payment through their own checkouts, so you should not need to pay any of them by bank transfer to a personal account.
Avoid saving your card on a shared device, and log out of shopping accounts on computers you do not own.
Secure online payment and best deals in Australia 2026
The best online deals in Australia in 2026 are worth the same checks as any other order, and busy sale periods can also bring copycat pages and too-good-to-be-true listings. Large sale events such as Black Friday, Click Frenzy and end of financial year bring lower prices across many stores. Dates move each year, so check each store's own page for the current event.
On a sale order:
- Open the store directly or from ShopBack, not from a link in an unexpected message.
- Compare the delivered price with one other store before you pay.
- Read the Terms on the store's ShopBack page before applying any sale code.
- Go through ShopBack before you check out, so the sale order also brings part of the spend back.
Check the seller and the returns policy
For an Australian business, look for its ABN and check it on ABN Lookup, the free public tool from the Australian Business Register. It shows whether the ABN is active or cancelled, the business type and its GST status, and no login is needed.
On a marketplace, the store you pay may not be the seller of the item. On Amazon Australia, the product page shows who sells and ships the item. On Temu, many items ship from China, and Temu also runs a local seller programme that includes Australia (as of July 2025). Read the delivery estimate and the return terms for that specific item.
Your consumer rights. The Australian Consumer Law has applied nationally since 1 January 2011. It gives consumer guarantees on goods, so a faulty item may entitle you to a repair, replacement or refund. Change-of-mind returns are a store policy, not a legal right, so read the policy before you buy something you might send back.
GST in the price. Australian consumer prices normally include GST of 10%. Since 1 July 2018, GST has generally applied to imported goods valued at A$1,000 or less sold by registered overseas sellers and marketplaces, so the checkout price on large overseas marketplaces usually already includes it.
Amazon vs Temu: what to check before paying, and price comparison 2026
Amazon Australia and Temu both use their own secure checkouts, and the checks before paying differ mainly in delivery speed, seller and returns. Compare each on its own strengths.
| Point to check | Amazon Australia | Temu |
|---|---|---|
| Membership | Prime: $9.99 a month or $79 a year after a 30-day free trial, according to Amazon | No paid membership needed to shop |
| Delivery | Free delivery with no minimum on Prime-eligible items for Prime members, excluding select remote areas, according to Amazon | Most items ship from China; check the estimated delivery date at checkout |
| In Australia since | Amazon Australia launched in 2017 | Launched in Australia in March 2023 |
| Seller | The product page shows who sells and ships the item | Check the item listing and Temu's own terms |
| Before you check out | Empty the cart, open Amazon from ShopBack, then add items | Read the Terms on the Temu page on ShopBack before using a coupon |
For a price comparison, open the same item on both, write down the delivered price and delivery date, then choose. Whichever store you pick, go through the Amazon Australia or Temu page on ShopBack before you pay.
Prime maths. Twelve monthly payments of $9.99 add up to $119.88, so the $79 yearly plan is $40.88 less, based on Amazon's listed prices at the time of writing.
Amazon, Temu and Coles: checks for each store in Australia
Each store has its own programme or official offer. Use that first, then go through ShopBack as the step before you pay.
Amazon Australia
- Prime includes free delivery with no minimum on Prime-eligible items, according to Amazon, with a 30-day free trial.
- Seller and returns are shown on each product page.
- Start with an empty cart. At the time of writing, the Terms on the Amazon page on ShopBack say items already in the cart before you click through from ShopBack are not eligible.
Temu
- Temu launched in Australia in March 2023 and is run by PDD Holdings.
- Delivery dates are usually longer for items shipped from China, so check the estimate before you pay.
- Coupons. At the time of writing, the Terms on the Temu page on ShopBack say a promo, coupon or discount code not featured on ShopBack makes the whole order ineligible. Check that page before using one.
Coles
- Coles operated 861 stores in 2025 (830 supermarkets and 31 Coles Local stores), according to Coles Group's annual report, and runs Coles Online for delivery and Click and Collect.
- At checkout, check the delivery slot, the delivery fee and minimum spend shown, and your substitution settings.
- Flybuys is Coles' loyalty programme; link your number to your Coles account so points collect.
- Start from ShopBack. Open the Coles page on ShopBack and place the order on the Coles website in that same session. At the time of writing, the Terms there exclude Coles app orders and orders using promo codes not featured on ShopBack.
Other Australian online stores where the same checks apply include Woolworths, Big W, eBay Australia, JB Hi-Fi, The Iconic and Myer.
Check ShopBack before you check out
Before you check out, go through ShopBack to get a post-purchase discount on the order. It takes a few seconds:
- Open the ShopBack Australia app or website (or the browser extension).
- Tap the store, for example Amazon Australia, Temu or Coles.
- Shop and pay in that same session, on the same device.
- After the store confirms the order, cash lands in your ShopBack account, and you can withdraw it to an Australian bank account.
Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.
Worked example (illustrative). Say your order comes to $150. At an illustrative 4%, $6 comes back, so what the order really costs you is $144. Check the live rate on the store's ShopBack page, because rates change by store and campaign, and some items or codes can be excluded.
For the tracking basics, see how to activate cashback before buying, and for codes, how to find promo codes that work.
Common checkout mistakes
- Paying a copycat page. Check the domain in the address bar on the payment page.
- Paying by bank transfer to an unknown seller. Use a method with a dispute option instead.
- Missing the delivery fee. Read the order summary, not just the product page price.
- Using an outside code on a store that excludes it. Read the Terms on the store's ShopBack page first.
- Forgetting ShopBack until after paying. The store has to be opened from ShopBack before you pay.
Key takeaways
- Check the delivered price, the https checkout, your payment method, the seller and returns, your code, and ShopBack before you pay.
- Pay with a card or service that lets you dispute a charge; avoid bank transfers, gift cards or crypto to unknown sellers.
- Check an Australian seller's ABN on ABN Lookup.
- Use the store's own programme: Prime at Amazon ($9.99 a month or $79 a year after a 30-day trial, per Amazon), Flybuys at Coles.
- Check ShopBack before you check out: open ShopBack, tap the store, then pay.
Frequently asked questions
What should I check before paying for an online order in Australia?
Check six things: the delivered price including delivery and any fees, that the checkout address starts with https and belongs to the store, the payment method and whether it lets you dispute a charge, the seller's details and returns policy, whether your discount code keeps the order eligible, and that you went through ShopBack before you check out. These checks usually take about a minute.
What is a secure online payment method in Australia?
A secure online payment is one made on the store's own https checkout, with a credit or debit card or a payment service that gives you a way to dispute the charge. With a card, your bank may be able to reverse a payment through a chargeback if goods do not arrive or are not as described. Paying by direct bank transfer, gift cards or crypto to a seller you do not know usually gives you far fewer options.
How do I check that an Australian online store is a real business?
Look for the business's ABN on the website, then search it on ABN Lookup, the free public tool from the Australian Business Register. It shows whether the ABN is active or cancelled, the business type and its GST status. Also check for a physical contact address and a clear returns policy.
Do I have consumer rights when I buy online in Australia?
In most cases you do. The Australian Consumer Law, in force nationally since 1 January 2011, gives consumer guarantees on goods, so a faulty item may entitle you to a repair, replacement or refund. Change-of-mind returns depend on each store's own policy, so read it before you pay.
What should I check before paying on Amazon Australia?
Check whether the item is Prime-eligible and who the seller is, the delivery date, and the returns option on the product page. According to Amazon, Prime costs $9.99 a month or $79 a year after a 30-day free trial and includes free delivery with no minimum on Prime-eligible items. Before you check out, empty your cart, open Amazon from ShopBack, then add items and pay.
What should I check before paying on Temu?
Check the delivered price and estimated delivery date, since most Temu items ship from China, and read Temu's own return terms for that item. If you use a coupon, check the Terms on the Temu page on ShopBack first, because at the time of writing a code not featured on ShopBack makes the whole order ineligible for cash back.
What should I check before paying for a Coles online order?
Check the delivery or Click and Collect slot, the delivery fee and minimum spend shown at checkout, substitutions for out-of-stock items, and that your Flybuys number is linked. Then start the order from the Coles page on ShopBack Australia. At the time of writing, the Terms there exclude Coles app orders and orders using promo codes not featured on ShopBack, so order on the Coles website.
Why should I check ShopBack before I check out?
Before you check out, go through ShopBack to get a post-purchase discount on the order. Open the ShopBack Australia app or website, tap the store, then pay in that same session. After the store confirms the order, cash lands in your ShopBack account.
Is cashback the same as points?
They work differently. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. On ShopBack Australia, confirmed cash can be withdrawn to an Australian bank account.
Does the price at checkout include GST?
In most cases it does. Australian prices for consumers normally include GST of 10%, and since 1 July 2018 GST has generally applied to imported goods valued at A$1,000 or less sold by registered overseas sellers and marketplaces. Check the order summary for delivery, surcharges or other fees before you pay.
