Qantas Frequent Flyer vs KrisFlyer vs Asia Miles for Australians 2026

Australia-based points collectors can choose Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity, KrisFlyer or Asia Miles depending on where they fly, so compare them, then book through ShopBack before you pay, where ShopBack Cashback works like a discount, only easier than a promo code. Which of these makes sense depends on where you actually fly.

The verdict

For most Australian collectors in 2026, Qantas Frequent Flyer is the primary programme because of unmatched Australian earning breadth (Woolworths Everyday Rewards, BP, extensive credit card partnerships including ANZ Qantas, NAB Qantas, Westpac Altitude Qantas and Amex Qantas Ultimate), oneworld redemption on Cathay, JAL, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar, and British Airways, and dominant SYD-DPS Jetstar direct-service routing to Bali. KrisFlyer is the secondary flexible programme for aspirational Suites-cabin redemptions via Amex Membership Rewards transfers. Asia Miles is worth pursuing if Hong Kong routing or Cathay First is on your radar. Velocity Frequent Flyer is the underrated backup for domestic-focused travellers who prefer Virgin Australia. The right single-programme choice depends on where you actually fly, not on which programme has the biggest brand.

The four programmes at a glance

Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) is Qantas Airways' loyalty programme, launched in 1987. It's a oneworld member with partnerships across British Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Iberia, American Airlines, and Finnair, plus a bilateral partnership with Emirates. Qantas Points are earned from Qantas and partner flights, Woolworths Everyday Rewards, BP fuel, Qantas Wine, Qantas Marketplace, Qantas Hotels, Qantas Insurance, and a wide range of Australian credit cards. Redemption is via Classic Rewards (fixed-cost, limited seats) and Points Plus Pay (variable). Elite status tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Platinum One, Chairman's Lounge.

Velocity Frequent Flyer is Virgin Australia's programme. It partners with Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and others; check Velocity's partner list for the current line-up. Velocity Points earn from Virgin Australia flights, partner flights, and a range of Australian credit cards. Elite tiers: Red, Silver, Gold, Platinum.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is Singapore Airlines' Star Alliance programme, headquartered in Singapore. Star Alliance partners include ANA, Lufthansa, Thai, Air New Zealand, Air Canada, United, Turkish, Egyptair, and Ethiopian. KrisFlyer miles earn from Singapore Airlines flights, Star Alliance partner flights, hotel partners, and (crucially for Australians) American Express Membership Rewards transfers and Diners Club transfers. Elite tiers: KrisFlyer Elite Silver, KrisFlyer Elite Gold, PPS Club, Solitaire PPS Club.

Cathay Asia Miles is Cathay Pacific's programme. Cathay's oneworld positioning gives Asia Miles redemption partners including Qantas, JAL, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar, British Airways, American Airlines, plus Cathay's own network. Miles earn from Cathay Pacific flights, Cathay-branded credit cards (limited Australian availability), and Amex Membership Rewards transfers.

How much do Australian collectors actually earn from each programme?

Everyday earning from AU-based spend, ranked by breadth and depth.

Qantas Frequent Flyer: Deepest domestic AU ecosystem. Woolworths Everyday Rewards conversion (2,000 WR points = 1,000 QFF), BP direct earn, Qantas Wine, Qantas Marketplace, Qantas Money, plus wide credit card options. ANZ Qantas Signature Priority (uncapped points earn on most spend), NAB Qantas Rewards, Westpac Altitude Qantas and Amex Qantas Ultimate all direct-earn QFF. Typical everyday-spend earn: 0.5 to 1.5 QFF points per A$1.

Amex Membership Rewards as a KrisFlyer/Asia Miles/Velocity feeder: The most flexible transferable pool for Australians. Amex Platinum Charge Card, Amex Explorer, Amex Gold Business, and Amex Platinum Business all earn Membership Rewards Points, which transfer to KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Velocity, Hilton Honors, and other partners at ratios that depend on the card and the partner. Verify current transfer ratios on the American Express Australia rewards partners page. Typical earn: 1 to 3 Membership Rewards per A$1 depending on category and card.

Velocity Frequent Flyer: Growing AU ecosystem. Direct earn from Virgin Australia flights, plus credit card options through ANZ Velocity, NAB Velocity, and Westpac Altitude conversion. Fewer supermarket and fuel partners than QFF. Typical everyday earn: 0.5 to 1 Velocity point per A$1.

KrisFlyer direct-earn in Australia: Minimal. No Singapore Airlines-branded credit card is routinely issued in Australia. Australian KrisFlyer collectors overwhelmingly earn via Amex Membership Rewards transfers rather than direct earning. Direct flights on Singapore Airlines from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth to Singapore all earn KrisFlyer miles at cabin-and-fare-based rates.

Asia Miles direct-earn in Australia: Also minimal. Australian Amex Membership Rewards transfers to Asia Miles is the primary route. Cathay Pacific flights ex-Sydney or Melbourne earn Asia Miles at cabin-and-fare-based rates.

For a household with A$100,000 of annual credit-card spend split evenly across a Qantas card and an Amex Membership Rewards card, the earn rates above work out to around 25,000 to 75,000 QFF points plus 50,000 to 150,000 Membership Rewards points transferable to KrisFlyer/Asia Miles/Velocity. At the top of those ranges, that can cover one or two business-class Asia-Pacific redemptions a year.

Transfer partners into each programme (Australian-relevant)

Into Qantas Frequent Flyer:

• Direct earn from ANZ, NAB, Westpac and Amex Qantas-branded cards
• Woolworths Everyday Rewards (2:1 to QFF)
• Diners Club Rewards (transfer varies)
• Selected retail partners
• Amex Membership Rewards: check Amex's partner page for whether your card can transfer to Qantas

Into Velocity:

• Direct earn from ANZ Velocity and NAB Velocity cards
• Westpac Altitude Rewards Black transfers to Velocity
• CBA Awards Velocity variant
• Amex Membership Rewards to Velocity (ratio depends on the card; verify current)
• ANZ Rewards Black at 2:1

Into KrisFlyer:

• Amex Membership Rewards (ratio depends on the card; verify current)
• Diners Club Rewards
• Direct earn on Singapore Airlines flights
• Star Alliance partner flights (ANA, Thai, Air New Zealand, United, Lufthansa)
• KrisFlyer Spree (retail partners)

Into Asia Miles:

• Amex Membership Rewards (ratio depends on the card; verify current)
• Diners Club Rewards
• Cathay Pacific flights direct earn
• oneworld partner flights when credited to Asia Miles

The strategic Australian holding is one Qantas-branded credit card (ANZ Qantas Signature Priority is a common choice; verify current annual fee and earn rates) plus one Amex Platinum Charge Card or Amex Explorer for Membership Rewards flexibility. This covers direct QFF earn on everyday spend and flexible transfer to KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, or Velocity for redemptions.

Award chart differences on common Australian international routes

Order-of-magnitude one-way award pricing on popular routes ex-Australia for 2026. Verify current tables on each programme's website before booking; award pricing has been adjusted periodically across all four programmes.

Sydney to Bali (Denpasar) - Economy

• QFF Classic Rewards on Jetstar: from around 18,000 QFF points one-way at low season
• Velocity Rewards on Virgin Australia code-share: from around 17,900 points one-way
• KrisFlyer Saver on Singapore Airlines via SIN: around 30,000 miles (routed via Singapore, longer)
• Asia Miles on Cathay via HKG: around 20,000 miles routed via Hong Kong (available only when Cathay-connecting service is offered) Verdict: QFF or Velocity for direct-service value.

Sydney to Singapore - Economy

• QFF Classic on Qantas or Emirates: from around 32,000 QFF points one-way
• KrisFlyer Saver on Singapore Airlines: around 30,000 to 40,000 miles depending on class and fuel-surcharge treatment
• Velocity on Singapore Airlines: variable Verdict: KrisFlyer if you're already collecting via Amex transfers; QFF if you fly Qantas or Emirates.

Sydney to Hong Kong - Business

• Asia Miles on Cathay Pacific: around 65,000 to 85,000 miles one-way Saver in business
• QFF Classic on Cathay via oneworld: around 96,000 QFF points one-way in business
• KrisFlyer on Star Alliance carrier (via SIN): around 92,000 miles one-way in business Verdict: Asia Miles wins on Cathay metal SYD-HKG business.

Sydney to Tokyo (Narita or Haneda) - Business

• QFF Classic on JAL, Qantas, or Emirates via oneworld: around 96,000 QFF one-way
• KrisFlyer via SIN on Singapore Airlines: around 92,000 miles one-way
• Asia Miles on JAL via HKG: around 90,000 to 100,000 miles depending on routing
• Velocity via ANA partner: around 95,000 to 105,000 points Verdict: All four compete tightly. KrisFlyer with Suites cabin availability wins for aspirational; QFF wins for oneworld convenience.

Sydney to London Heathrow - Business

• QFF Classic via Qantas or Emirates: around 144,000 to 158,000 QFF one-way in business
• KrisFlyer Saver on Singapore Airlines via SIN: around 110,000 to 130,000 miles one-way
• Asia Miles on Cathay via HKG plus BA London: around 130,000 miles one-way Verdict: KrisFlyer often wins on SYD-LHR business via Singapore Airlines Suites or business, dependent on award availability.

The pattern: QFF wins routes served by Qantas, Emirates, or JAL out of Australia. KrisFlyer wins routes best served via Singapore Airlines Suites cabin. Asia Miles wins Hong Kong-anchored routes. Velocity wins where Virgin Australia direct service applies.

Elite status maths: which is achievable for a typical Australian flyer?

Qantas Silver: 300 status credits per year. A return economy flight SYD-MEL earns roughly 10 to 20 status credits; a return SYD-DPS economy earns 30 to 50. Achievable with roughly 4 to 6 international return trips per year on Qantas or oneworld partners. Verify current status credit earn tables on Qantas website.

Qantas Gold: 700 status credits. Requires roughly 10 to 15 international return trips per year, or 3 to 5 business-class international returns.

Velocity Silver: 250 status credits. Slightly easier than Qantas Silver at the entry level.

KrisFlyer Elite Silver: 25,000 Elite Miles on Singapore Airlines and partner flights in a membership year. Requires more concentrated Singapore Airlines flying than QFF Silver requires Qantas flying.

Cathay status: Cathay's membership tiers (Silver, Gold and Diamond) are earned with status points from Cathay and partner flights; check Cathay's website for current thresholds.

For an Australian who flies mostly domestic plus 2 to 3 Bali or Singapore trips per year, Qantas Silver is realistic, KrisFlyer Elite Silver requires more Singapore Airlines-specific concentration, and Cathay status requires Cathay-specific loyalty. The takeaway: unless you already fly heavily on Singapore Airlines or Cathay for other reasons, Qantas Silver is the most accessible elite tier for the average Australian traveller.

Which credit cards feed which programme

Qantas Frequent Flyer direct earn:

• ANZ Qantas Signature Priority (currently one of the highest-earning; verify current terms)
• NAB Qantas Rewards Signature
• Westpac Altitude Qantas
• Amex Qantas Ultimate
• Amex Qantas Business Rewards

Velocity direct earn:

• ANZ Velocity Platinum and Black
• NAB Velocity Business Card
• Westpac Altitude Rewards Black (transfer to Velocity)
• CBA Awards (Velocity variant)

Amex Membership Rewards (transfers to KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Velocity):

• Amex Platinum Charge Card (highest earn rate)
• Amex Explorer
• Amex Gold Business
• Amex Platinum Business

Diners Club Rewards (transfers to KrisFlyer and Asia Miles, plus some others):

• Diners Club Rewards Card (limited AU availability post-2020s restructuring; verify current)

The dominant Australian dual-card strategy for a strategic collector: ANZ Qantas Signature Priority or NAB Qantas Rewards Signature (for direct Qantas earn on everyday spend) plus Amex Platinum Charge Card or Amex Explorer (for Membership Rewards flexibility). Verify current annual fees and specific earn rates on each issuer's page before signing up as terms change.

For the Bali-bound family, the Suites-cabin dreamer, and the Hong Kong routing specialist

For the Bali-bound family (2 adults 2 kids, once a year). Qantas Frequent Flyer via Jetstar Classic Rewards is the value pick. Even at the 18,000 to 22,000 QFF points per person per one-way, a family of four one-way to Bali in economy runs 72,000 to 88,000 QFF points total, roughly A$100 to A$200 taxes and fees per person on top. Book 6 to 11 months out for the best Classic Rewards seat availability. Everyday Woolworths shop plus BP fuel via linked cards easily accumulates one family Bali flight per year.

For the Suites-cabin dreamer (annual splurge on premium travel). KrisFlyer via Amex Membership Rewards Platinum Charge Card. Singapore Airlines' Suites cabin on the A380 SIN-LHR and SIN-JFK is one of the world's most aspirational award redemptions. Accumulating 200,000+ Membership Rewards points via Amex Platinum spend across 12 to 18 months, transferring at whatever the prevailing ratio is, produces one Suites-cabin redemption on a major long-haul. Availability is competitive and Advantage Awards cost more but book more easily.

For the Hong Kong routing specialist (frequent business travel to HK/mainland China). Asia Miles via Amex Membership Rewards. Cathay's SYD-HKG twice-daily service is a strategic connection to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and onward within Asia. Asia Miles Business Saver on SYD-HKG runs 65,000 to 85,000 miles one-way (versus QFF Classic at 96,000). If your work takes you through Hong Kong 3+ times per year, an Asia-Miles-focused strategy pays back.

For the domestic-only Australian flyer (Sydney-Melbourne, Sydney-Brisbane, Perth commutes). Velocity Frequent Flyer on Virgin Australia is often better value than QFF for pure domestic. Virgin Australia's Business class product plus Velocity award availability on domestic tends to be more generous than Qantas Classic Rewards on the same routes.

For the reluctant collector (only wants one programme, moderate flyer). Qantas Frequent Flyer plus Amex Membership Rewards is the two-card holding that covers most Australian collector use cases without over-engineering.

When single-programme concentration does NOT apply

You are early in a career and travel infrequently. Points don't compound meaningfully below 6 flight sectors per year. Focus on cash cost minimisation rather than optimising loyalty.

You are a Chairman's Lounge or Solitaire PPS Club member. At the top tiers, cross-programme optimisation is dwarfed by the direct-programme benefits of the tier you already hold.

You fly on employer-booked corporate contracts. Corporate travel policies often specify airlines and dictate points crediting rules. Optimise your personal spend for points separately; don't attempt to override corporate policy.

You are already deep in a US-based programme. If you hold United MileagePlus 1K, Delta Diamond Medallion, or American Airlines Executive Platinum from prior US residence, keep flying that programme; do not restart Australian collection in parallel.

Award chart resets are on the horizon for a programme you're actively collecting. Qantas, KrisFlyer, and Asia Miles all have historically adjusted award pricing periodically. When a reset is announced (usually 6 to 12 months in advance), burn accumulated points on planned redemptions before the change; do not stockpile through an announced devaluation.

Fuel surcharges dominate the redemption cost. Some carriers (British Airways, Lufthansa on some routes) charge fuel surcharges of A$500 to A$1,500 on award tickets, making the redemption feel worse than paying cash. Compare cash-equivalent value of the points versus the paid ticket. Emirates, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines have all periodically adjusted fuel surcharge policies; verify current at booking time.

Programme partnership termination. Airline partnership agreements can change. Verify partnership currency at time of transfer, especially for transfer-out from Amex Membership Rewards or Diners Club Rewards.

Frequently asked questions

For an Australian who flies Sydney to Bali twice a year, is Qantas Frequent Flyer or KrisFlyer the better programme?

Qantas Frequent Flyer is typically the better single-programme choice for an Australian flying Sydney to Bali twice a year. Qantas and Jetstar both fly Sydney to Denpasar direct, and both earn Qantas Points on paid fares. Award redemption from SYD to DPS on Jetstar Classic Rewards runs from around 18,000 QFF points one-way economy at the low end (verify current tables on Qantas website). KrisFlyer redemption via Singapore Airlines requires a stopover in Singapore, adding hours and connection risk. However, for an Australian who happens to have transferable-points credit cards (American Express Platinum, Amex Explorer), transferring to KrisFlyer for a Suites-cabin trip to Europe via SIN can be a higher-value use than direct Qantas award redemption. The tie-breaker: if you fly Jetstar, Qantas, or oneworld carriers to Bali frequently, QFF. If you fly Singapore Airlines or want Suites-cabin aspirational redemptions, KrisFlyer.

How does Velocity Frequent Flyer compare with Qantas Frequent Flyer in 2026?

Velocity Frequent Flyer is Virgin Australia's programme and is the quieter, often-better-value alternative to Qantas Frequent Flyer for Australia-based collectors. Velocity partners with Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways among others, and Virgin Australia code-shares heavily on domestic routes. Redemption on Virgin Australia domestic flights typically requires fewer points than Qantas Classic Reward Seat availability, though both are subject to award seat capacity. Velocity earns from a smaller domestic credit card partner list than QFF, and Qantas has a bigger points-earning ecosystem overall through Woolworths Rewards, retail partners, and status tiers. For domestic-only Australian flyers who prefer Virgin, Velocity beats QFF on both cost and availability. For international collectors leveraging oneworld and Emirates, QFF has more use cases.

How many KrisFlyer miles do you need for a business class redemption from Sydney to Tokyo in 2026?

Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer award chart for Saver Business Class from Sydney to Tokyo via Singapore requires around 92,000 miles one-way as a general order of magnitude on Singapore Airlines metal. Advantage Awards (higher availability, higher cost) run around 135,000 miles one-way. Verify current award chart tables on the KrisFlyer website before booking; Singapore Airlines has adjusted its awards periodically. Star Alliance partner redemptions (ANA, Thai, Air New Zealand) on the SIN-NRT segment run at different rates. For comparison, Qantas Classic Rewards to Tokyo via Sydney requires 96,000 to 108,000 QFF points in business one-way at typical rate. Both programmes charge substantial taxes and carrier surcharges (A$300 to A$800 depending on cabin and route) in addition to the mileage cost.

Which credit cards in Australia transfer to Singapore KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, or Qantas points?

American Express Membership Rewards (from Amex Platinum Charge, Amex Explorer, Amex Gold Business, Amex Platinum Business) transfers to KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, and Velocity; check Amex's partner page for Qantas transfer options on your card. Qantas-specific earning comes from Amex Qantas Ultimate and Amex Qantas Business Rewards, plus the ANZ Qantas Frequent Flyer suite, NAB Qantas Rewards suite, and Westpac Altitude Qantas. Diners Club also transfers to KrisFlyer and Asia Miles. Bank rewards programmes like NAB Rewards Points, ANZ Rewards, Westpac Altitude Rewards Black, and CBA Awards typically offer transfer to Velocity at 2:1 or 3:1 and sometimes to KrisFlyer. Check current transfer ratios and eligible partners on each card issuer's website before signing up as ratios change.

Is Asia Miles worth pursuing for an Australian collector in 2026?

Asia Miles is worth pursuing for Australian collectors who prioritise Hong Kong routing, Cathay Pacific service, or Cathay First Class aspirations. Cathay Pacific operates twice-daily Sydney-Hong Kong service and daily Melbourne-Hong Kong, with connections to Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Osaka, Bangkok, and onward to London and North America. Award redemption on Cathay's oneworld network is typically favourable to Asia Miles holders. Asia Miles doesn't have the transfer partners of KrisFlyer for aspirational Star Alliance metal (ANA, Lufthansa), but oneworld coverage (British Airways, American Airlines, Japan Airlines, Qantas) is deep. For Australian collectors who don't fly Cathay and prefer Star Alliance or oneworld's non-Cathay side, KrisFlyer or Qantas usually offers more use cases.

Which points programme has the best earn rate from Australian everyday spend?

Qantas Frequent Flyer has the deepest Australian everyday-spend ecosystem. Woolworths Everyday Rewards converts to Qantas Points, BP fuel earns Qantas Points, Qantas Wine and Qantas Marketplace both earn, plus the widest Australian credit card earning options (ANZ Qantas, NAB Qantas, Westpac Altitude Qantas, Amex Qantas Ultimate). Amex Membership Rewards is the best transferable-points-to-multiple-airline route, feeding KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Velocity, and other partners at ratios that depend on the card and the airline (check the Amex Australia partners page). For pure everyday earn from AU spend, QFF wins on breadth and Woolworths ubiquity. For flexibility and aspirational redemptions, Amex Membership Rewards is the strategic move.

How do elite status requirements compare between Qantas Silver, KrisFlyer Elite Silver, and Asia Miles Silver?

Qantas Frequent Flyer Silver requires 300 status credits per year (from eligible flights on Qantas and partners). KrisFlyer Elite Silver requires 25,000 Elite Miles on Singapore Airlines and partner flights in a membership year. Cathay's membership tiers (Silver, Gold and Diamond) are earned with status points from Cathay and partner flights; check Cathay's website for current thresholds. Velocity Silver requires 250 status credits from eligible flights and services. These figures are order-of-magnitude and each programme has periodic promotions and revised thresholds; verify current requirements on each programme's website. In practice for a mid-frequency Australian flyer, Qantas Silver is achievable with 4 to 6 return trips per year on Qantas or oneworld partners including domestic. KrisFlyer Elite Silver requires more concentrated Singapore Airlines flying.

What is the best sweet spot Qantas redemption for Australian collectors going to Bali?

Jetstar Bali Classic Rewards from Sydney or Melbourne typically requires from around 18,000 to 22,000 QFF points one-way economy at low season on the SYD-DPS or MEL-DPS routes when Classic Rewards seats are available. Business class runs from around 40,000 to 55,000 QFF points one-way where seats are released (rare on Jetstar direct; more common on Qantas partner routings via Singapore or Hong Kong). Taxes and fees are typically A$100 to A$200 one-way on top. Since Bali is one of the most-flown routes from Australia, Classic Rewards seat availability is competitive; book 6 to 11 months out for the best chance. Verify current award chart tables on the Qantas Frequent Flyer website; award pricing has been adjusted periodically.

Can Australians earn KrisFlyer miles without flying Singapore Airlines?

Yes. American Express Membership Rewards transfers to KrisFlyer at generally competitive ratios (verify current on the Amex Australia partners page). Diners Club Rewards also transfers. Bank rewards programmes including NAB Rewards, Westpac Altitude, and CBA Awards offer KrisFlyer as a redemption partner at varying ratios. Singapore Airlines' co-branded credit cards are not routinely issued in Australia. In practice, Australian KrisFlyer collectors are almost always transferring in from Amex Membership Rewards or Diners Club. Direct earn from Singapore Airlines flights, Star Alliance partners, and Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer partners network (hotel and retail) also applies for those flying Singapore Airlines routes.

For an Australia-based collector without a preferred airline, which programme is the strategic single pick?

For an Australia-based collector with no strong airline preference and moderate travel frequency (4 to 8 trips per year mix of domestic and Asia-Pacific), Qantas Frequent Flyer is the strategic single-programme pick. It has the biggest domestic Australian earn ecosystem (Woolworths, BP, extensive credit card options), broad Asia-Pacific redemption on oneworld metal (Cathay, JAL, Malaysia Airlines, plus partner routes), Emirates partnership for European connections, and Bali-domestic-density that most other programmes cannot match. The second-best pick is American Express Membership Rewards as a flexible pool that can feed KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Velocity, and Hilton Honors depending on redemption. Holding both a Qantas-specific card and an Amex Membership Rewards card is the most common Australian points strategy.
