P&O vs Royal Caribbean vs Carnival: AU 2026 Cruise Departures

Short verdict: P&O Cruises Australia is no longer a standalone brand. The Carnival Corporation absorbed it into Carnival Cruise Line, and the two remaining P&O ships now sail as Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter from Sydney and Brisbane. That leaves two mainstream operators cruising from Australian ports in 2026: Carnival Cruise Line (year-round, four ships, cheapest per night) and Royal Caribbean (seasonal October to April, two big ships, premium tier). Carnival wins on value and year-round availability. Royal Caribbean wins on ship scale, family programming, and long New Zealand itineraries. The AU cruise market changed in 2025

For most of the last twenty years, mainstream cruising from Australian ports was a three-brand market: P&O Cruises Australia, Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean. P&O was the domestic incumbent, running the Pacific-branded ships (Pacific Adventure, Pacific Encounter, Pacific Explorer) out of Sydney and Brisbane on short-break and South Pacific runs.

That changed in June 2024 when Carnival Corporation announced it would absorb P&O Cruises Australia into Carnival Cruise Line. The transition completed on 29 March 2025, after more than 90 years of P&O cruising in Australia. Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter were refurbished and rebranded as Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter. Pacific Explorer retired from the fleet in February 2025. The P&O Cruises Australia website and booking flow closed down.

The practical implication for a 2026 buyer: if you land on an old article recommending P&O for a short Brisbane-to-Vanuatu run, that's now a Carnival product. The ship is the same. The itinerary style is similar. The pricing is competitive (the ex-P&O ships remain at the value end of the Carnival fleet). The brand is different.

Carnival Cruise Line in Australia 2026: year-round value

Carnival is now the dominant year-round mainstream operator in Australian waters. Four ships are deployed in the region for 2026:

• Carnival Adventure (ex-Pacific Adventure). Sydney-based, family-friendly, short-break and South Pacific specialist. Refurbished in 2025 with Carnival features layered on the P&O bones.
• Carnival Encounter (ex-Pacific Encounter). Brisbane-based, similar profile. Together with Adventure, the two ex-P&O ships anchor Carnival's short-break capacity.
• Carnival Splendor. Sydney-based year-round Carnival mainstay. Larger ship, broader itinerary set including longer South Pacific and Asia-adjacent runs.
• Carnival Luminosa. Brisbane-based seasonal, with longer-range South Pacific and repositioning cruises.

Carnival's structural advantages in 2026 are (1) year-round availability from Australian ports, (2) the strongest per-night pricing in the mainstream category, and (3) the widest catalogue of short breaks (3 to 5 nights) that suit long-weekend and school-holiday timing. Cruise Passenger's 2026 fare check found all four Carnival Australia ships sailing at less than an average of $100 a day for the 2025 to 2026 season, materially cheaper than Royal Caribbean's per-night on comparable South Pacific routes.

Carnival cruises the Oceania region with 365 days of departures a year, covering Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific, plus a handful of longer itineraries running up to Asia. If you want to cruise in June, July, or August (Australian winter), Carnival is the only mainstream option since Royal Caribbean redeploys.

Royal Caribbean in Australia 2026 and 2027: bigger ships, premium tier

Royal Caribbean's 2026 to 2027 Australian season runs from October 2026 through April 2027, with two ships deployed:

• Anthem of the Seas. Sydney-based, arriving October 2026 for its Sydney debut season. Anthem is a Quantum-class ship carrying up to 4,180 passengers and is the largest cruise ship ever homeported in Sydney at time of deployment. The 2026 to 2027 Anthem lineup features 21 sailings ranging from 3 to 11 nights, including two 4-night Hobart getaways, longer New Zealand fjords itineraries, and South Pacific loops.
• Quantum of the Seas. Brisbane-based, returning to Brisbane for its 2026 to 2027 season. Quantum focuses on shorter South Pacific runs with more weekend departures and 7 to 8 night island itineraries.

Royal Caribbean's structural advantages are (1) newer, larger, more feature-dense ships (Quantum-class carries rock walls, FlowRider surf simulator on some sisters, iFly skydiving simulator, and North Star viewing pod), (2) longer New Zealand and scenic-cruising itineraries from Sydney including Milford Sound, and (3) the strongest kids programming in the mainstream tier via Adventure Ocean.

The tradeoff is price. Cruise Passenger's Australian fare surveys have consistently found Royal Caribbean per-night pricing running 2 to 3 times Carnival's on comparable Sydney or Brisbane South Pacific itineraries. If you're comparing a 4-night South Pacific escape and cash total is the deciding factor, Carnival wins. If ship size, kids programming, and New Zealand scenic breadth are the deciding factors, Royal Caribbean wins.

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking your pre-cruise and post-cruise land nights. Sydney CBD and Brisbane CBD hotel spend is often a bigger swing factor in a 2-adult cruise budget than most buyers expect.

The P&O legacy on Carnival: what actually changed

Buyers looking at a Carnival Adventure or Carnival Encounter itinerary from an old P&O search should know what's the same and what's different post-transition.

What stayed the same: the ships. Adventure (ex-Pacific Adventure) and Encounter (ex-Pacific Encounter) are the same steel, same layouts, same cabin categories, and largely the same crew. The short-break and South Pacific itinerary set out of Sydney and Brisbane is largely intact. Cabin pricing on the two ex-P&O ships remains at the value end of the Carnival fleet.

What changed: the branding, the onboard concept, the loyalty program, the dining venues, and some public-space refurbishments. Carnival's fun-first onboard concept is now overlaid on the P&O bones. P&O's Pacific Aria loyalty tiers no longer transfer directly; existing P&O status was moved into Carnival's VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) loyalty program on a mapped basis. Carnival's specialty dining and beverage packages replace P&O equivalents.

If you're a long-time P&O customer who did 15+ Pacific-branded sailings and had reached top-tier P&O loyalty status, your VIFP mapping is worth checking directly with Carnival before you book. Loyalty benefits on drinks package discounts and priority embarkation are the two most affected.

When each line wins in 2026

Three practical scenarios where the AU cruise buyer can decide fast:

Short weekend break, cheapest total, family of 4. Carnival Adventure or Carnival Encounter. Ex-P&O ships still price at the value end of the Carnival fleet. Sydney or Brisbane departures, 3 to 5 nights, South Pacific.

7 to 10 night South Pacific with bigger onboard experience. Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas from Brisbane (Oct 2026 to Apr 2027) if you can time it. Larger ship, more entertainment, Adventure Ocean kids programming. Carnival Splendor or Luminosa if you need year-round timing.

New Zealand scenic cruise from Sydney with fjords included. Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas from Sydney (Oct 2026 to Apr 2027). Longer itineraries up to 11 nights, larger observation decks better suited to Milford and Doubtful Sound scenic days. Carnival Splendor runs shorter NZ loops but doesn't match Anthem on ship-scale for scenic days.

Winter cruise (May to Sep). Carnival only. Royal Caribbean redeploys ships out of Australia for southern winter.

Long South Pacific and Asia adjacent

Both operators publish South Pacific itineraries covering the core stops: Vanuatu (Port Vila, Mystery Island, Champagne Bay), New Caledonia (Noumea, Isle of Pines, Lifou), and Fiji (Suva, Dravuni, Lautoka). Carnival covers all three in 3 to 10 night formats year-round. Royal Caribbean covers all three in 7 to 11 night formats seasonally.

Carnival is the only line running longer repositioning-style itineraries from Australia that touch Asia (Singapore, Bali, Papua New Guinea) in 2026. If your goal is to combine a cruise with an Asia land holiday, Carnival's longer sailings out of Sydney or Brisbane are the mainstream option, and you can then extend the trip on the land side.

Extend the trip with Asia land nights. Agoda via ShopBack covers Singapore, Bali, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur properties for post-cruise stays. Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at Agoda to earn cashback on qualifying hotel bookings.

New Zealand from Sydney: Anthem's 2026 to 2027 signature

Royal Caribbean has positioned Anthem of the Seas as the New Zealand and scenic-cruising flagship for Sydney 2026 to 2027. The Milford Sound / Doubtful Sound / Dusky Sound triple-fjord scenic-cruising days are the signature draw. Anthem's larger observation decks (including the glass-sided North Star viewing pod) and multi-level Solarium make her the strongest mainstream ship in Australia for those scenic days.

The full NZ loops run up to 11 nights and include North Island and South Island port calls (Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Picton, Dunedin) alongside the fjord scenic days. If you have a bucket-list New Zealand cruise budget and can time October to April, Anthem is the mainstream premium choice.

Carnival's NZ offering out of Sydney is shorter (typically 7 to 10 nights), skips the fjord scenic-cruising days on most sailings, and is priced significantly cheaper. If NZ fjord days are non-negotiable, Anthem. If NZ ports without fjords at a lower per-night is enough, Carnival Splendor.

Family programming: Adventure Ocean vs Camp Ocean

Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean kids programming is the mainstream category benchmark, with age-banded programming (3 to 5, 6 to 8, 9 to 12), a teen space, and evening programming that lets parents get dinner in a specialty venue solo. On Quantum-class ships (Anthem, Quantum) the programming has more physical space and more differentiated activities than the mainstream competition.

Carnival's Camp Ocean is the equivalent Carnival kids-club program, structured similarly with age bands. Camp Ocean is well regarded but the physical footprint on the ex-P&O ships (Adventure, Encounter) is smaller than on Anthem or Quantum. Splendor and Luminosa carry more standard Carnival kids-club space.

For a family with tweens or teens who will spend significant onboard time in kids programming, Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean on Anthem or Quantum is the mainstream benchmark. For a family whose kids are under 8 and cost-sensitive, Camp Ocean on Carnival Adventure or Encounter is enough at half the fare.

Booking timing and total-cost stack

Cruise fares for the 2026 to 2027 Australian season are already live and booking. Historical patterns suggest three windows when discounting is sharpest:

• Wave season (January to March). The industry-wide promotional window with reduced deposits, onboard credit stacking, and free specialty dining or drinks packages.
• Late-May flash sales. Post-EOFY-adjacent discounting on remaining shoulder-season inventory.
• 90-day-out fill-up. Distressed inventory 60 to 90 days before departure, particularly on unsold cabins.

Total-cost math is often driven more by the surrounding spend than the fare itself: flights to Sydney or Brisbane, pre-cruise or post-cruise land nights, port parking, gratuities, beverage packages, and travel insurance. Land-side spend is where ShopBack cashback stacks: hotel bookings via Booking.com, Agoda, and Hotels.com; flights via Qantas and Jetstar; and travel insurance where partner rates apply.

Book flights via ShopBack partners (e.g., Qantas or Jetstar) to earn cashback on your feeder flight to the cruise port.

Cabin choice: inside, oceanview, balcony, or suite

Cabin choice is the biggest per-person swing in your cruise cost. A rough guide for AU 2026 pricing on a 7-night South Pacific run:

• Inside cabin. Cheapest option, no window, works well on high-activity itineraries where cabin time is minimal. Carnival Adventure and Encounter inside cabins are the value-tier entry point.
• Oceanview cabin. Window, no balcony. Modest step up in cost, worth it on scenic-day itineraries (NZ fjords).
• Balcony cabin. Meaningful step up in cost, delivers private outdoor space and light. Anthem's balconies are noticeably larger than Carnival Adventure's on average.
• Suite. Premium tier, includes concierge access, priority embarkation, and specialty dining credits. Anthem's Royal Suite Class is the most feature-dense mainstream suite tier in the Australian market.

For a New Zealand scenic-cruising itinerary, balcony is usually worth the upgrade because scenic days are ship-facing. For a South Pacific port-heavy itinerary, oceanview is often enough because you're off-ship at ports for the scenic hours.

Onboard concept: fun-first Carnival vs feature-dense Royal Caribbean

The two brands are pitched at different onboard experiences even though both sit in the mainstream tier.

Carnival's onboard concept is fun-first. That translates to loud pool decks, comedy shows in the atrium, party-heavy evening programming, and dining venues that lean casual and abundant. On the ex-P&O ships (Adventure and Encounter), the Carnival makeover has layered in the Carnival Fun Squad activities crew, Guy's Burger Joint burgers, BlueIguana Cantina Mexican, and RedFrog Pub. The Carnival Splendor and Luminosa carry the full Carnival mainstream fleet feature set: WaterWorks slides, mini-golf, jogging track, and a range of specialty dining venues from steakhouse to Italian.

Royal Caribbean's onboard concept is feature-dense engineering. Quantum-class ships (Anthem and Quantum) carry Two70 (a multi-story observation lounge that transforms into an entertainment venue), North Star (a jewel-shaped glass viewing capsule that lifts guests 90 metres above sea level), SeaPlex (a bumper-car and roller-skating indoor arena), RipCord by iFly (a skydiving simulator), FlowRider surf simulator, and Bionic Bar (a robot bartender). Broadway-style theatre productions on the main stage sit at the top end of the mainstream cruise entertainment tier.

Neither concept is objectively better; they pitch to different holiday moods. For a mainstream cruise with kids where onboard entertainment is a headline feature, Royal Caribbean. For a value-tier short break where the ports and the pool deck are the point, Carnival.

Dining and drinks: what's included, what costs extra

Both operators include a main dining room across three seatings, a Lido buffet open long hours, and casual poolside food (burgers, pizza, ice cream). Both charge extra for specialty dining, alcohol, and premium coffee.

Carnival's included dining bank: main dining room, Lido Marketplace buffet, Guy's Burger Joint (poolside burgers), BlueIguana Cantina (Mexican), Pizza Pirate (pizza), and 24-hour room service on core items. Specialty (extra charge): Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse (approx $50 pp), Cucina del Capitano Italian, JiJi Asian Kitchen. Drinks packages are sold as CHEERS! bundles (all-inclusive alcohol) and Bottomless Bubbles (non-alcoholic).

Royal Caribbean's included dining bank: main dining room, Windjammer Marketplace buffet, Cafe Promenade, Sorrento's Pizza, El Loco Fresh Mexican, and room service on core items. Specialty (extra charge): Chops Grille steakhouse, Jamie's Italian, Wonderland (concept dining), Izumi Japanese, Chef's Table. Drinks packages come as Deluxe Beverage (all-inclusive alcohol), Refreshment Package (non-alcohol premium), and Classic Soda.

If dining variety is a meaningful decision factor, Royal Caribbean's Anthem-class specialty dining catalogue is broader than Carnival Adventure or Encounter's. If total cost with drinks package included matters more than dining variety, Carnival's CHEERS! is often the better per-head value.

Cost math worked example: 7-night South Pacific for 2 adults

A rough total-cost frame using indicative 2026 pricing helps buyers decide fast. Numbers below are directional ranges and will shift by season, cabin class, and promotion. Verify current pricing on the operator's site before booking.

Carnival Encounter, Brisbane, 7 nights, South Pacific, balcony for 2 adults: fare typically ranges from $1,600 to $2,400 total, plus roughly $224 gratuities (2 pax × $16 × 7 nights), plus optional drinks package (CHEERS! roughly $600 per person for 7 nights = $1,200). Rough total with drinks: $3,000 to $3,800.

Royal Caribbean Quantum, Brisbane, 7 nights, South Pacific, balcony for 2 adults: fare typically ranges from $3,500 to $5,500 total, plus roughly $252 gratuities (2 pax × $18 × 7 nights), plus Deluxe Beverage Package (roughly $850 per person for 7 nights = $1,700). Rough total with drinks: $5,450 to $7,450.

The 2 to 3× per-night pricing gap holds up in the totalled math. What Royal Caribbean sells for the premium is bigger ship, feature-dense onboard, and better kids programming. What Carnival sells for the value is more nights afloat for the same dollar.

Where ShopBack cashback moves the total-cost math is on the surrounding travel: 2 nights pre-cruise Brisbane CBD hotel via Booking.com, return flights via Qantas or Jetstar, cruise-port parking or airport transfers, and travel insurance. Book flights via ShopBack partners (e.g., Qantas or Jetstar) to earn cashback on your feeder flight, and activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at Booking.com or Agoda for your Sydney or Brisbane hotel nights.

What to check before you book

Five items to verify against the cruise line's own site before you commit:

• Actual sail date and port. Cruise itineraries can be adjusted or rerouted. Confirm the current itinerary on the cruise line's booking flow.
• Deposit and cancellation policy. Both operators run refundable and non-refundable fare classes; non-refundable is cheaper but locks you in.
• Gratuities policy. Automatic gratuities are added to your onboard account. Carnival runs slightly lower gratuity rates than Royal Caribbean, but both apply per-person per-night.
• Drinks package and specialty dining. Both operators sell prepaid packages; pre-cruise pricing is usually meaningfully cheaper than onboard purchase.
• Loyalty program status. If you have prior P&O loyalty status, confirm your Carnival VIFP mapping. If you have prior Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor status, benefits carry across.

Frequently asked questions

Is P&O Cruises Australia still operating in 2026? No. P&O Cruises Australia ceased operating as a standalone brand on 29 March 2025 after more than 90 years of Australian cruising. Carnival Corporation absorbed the Australia operation into Carnival Cruise Line. The two remaining P&O ships, Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter, now sail as Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter from Sydney and Brisbane. Pacific Explorer left the fleet in February 2025.

What ships does Carnival Cruise Line sail in Australia in 2026? Carnival Cruise Line has four ships deployed in the Australia and Oceania region in 2026: Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter (both ex-P&O), Carnival Splendor sailing year-round from Sydney, and Carnival Luminosa sailing seasonally from Brisbane. Carnival operates year-round in the region with 365 days of departures a year.

Which Royal Caribbean ships sail from Australia in 2026 and 2027? Anthem of the Seas sails from Sydney and Quantum of the Seas sails from Brisbane in the 2026 to 2027 Australian season, which runs from October 2026 through April 2027. Anthem operates 21 sailings ranging from 3 to 11 nights across South Pacific, New Zealand, and Australian coastal itineraries. Quantum focuses on shorter South Pacific runs with additional weekend departures.

When is the Royal Caribbean Australian cruise season? Royal Caribbean sails from Australia seasonally between October and April. Carnival by contrast operates in Australian waters year-round. If you want to cruise from an Australian port between May and September, Carnival is the only mainstream option; Royal Caribbean redeploys its Australia ships back to other regions during the southern winter.

Are Royal Caribbean fares more expensive than Carnival in Australia? Yes, materially. Industry surveys have found Royal Caribbean per-night fares in Australia typically run 2 to 3 times higher than Carnival's on comparable South Pacific itineraries. Carnival's ex-P&O ships (Adventure and Encounter) run at the value end of the Carnival fleet. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see how the pre-cruise or post-cruise land nights change your total-cost math.

Compare South Pacific itineraries: which cruise line does them better from Australia? Both cover the core South Pacific islands (Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji). Carnival wins on volume and short-break access (frequent 3 to 7 night sailings year-round). Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas focuses its 2026 to 2027 Brisbane deployment on South Pacific with more 7 to 8 night options. If you want longer at each port and larger ship amenities, Royal Caribbean. If you want fastest departure and cheapest total, Carnival.

Should I choose Anthem of the Seas for a New Zealand itinerary from Sydney in 2026? Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas is positioned specifically for New Zealand fjord and coastal cruises out of Sydney from October 2026, with itineraries running up to 11 nights. Carnival runs New Zealand loops as well but with less frequency and shorter typical duration. For a full Milford Sound / Doubtful Sound scenic-cruising itinerary, Anthem is the mainstream premium choice.

Can I get cashback on my cruise booking through ShopBack? ShopBack Australia does not currently list Carnival Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean as direct cashback partners at the cruise-line level. Where ShopBack helps is on the surrounding travel spend: hotels for pre-cruise nights via Booking.com, Agoda, or Hotels.com; flights to Sydney or Brisbane via ShopBack flight partners; and travel insurance and cruise-parking bookings. Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at Booking.com to earn cashback on your pre-cruise hotel stay.

How do I decide between Sydney and Brisbane as my cruise departure port in 2026? Sydney has more departures across both operators (Carnival Splendor, Carnival Adventure, Carnival Encounter, and Anthem of the Seas). Brisbane has Carnival Luminosa year-round and Quantum of the Seas seasonally. For South Pacific short breaks, Brisbane is closer and often cheaper per night. For New Zealand or Tasmania scenic runs, Sydney is the natural port. Book flights via ShopBack partners such as Qantas or Jetstar to earn cashback on your feeder flight.

Between Carnival and Royal Caribbean, which is best for families with kids in Australia? Royal Caribbean is generally considered the family benchmark thanks to Adventure Ocean kids programming, larger onboard entertainment (rock walls, ice rinks, FlowRider on some ships), and more differentiated dining. Carnival is more competitive on total cost for a family of four, and Carnival Adventure and Encounter still carry the family-friendly features from their P&O days. Under-8s and cost-sensitive families lean Carnival; tweens and teens with a bigger budget lean Royal Caribbean.
