Priority Pass vs LoungeBuddy vs DragonPass: AU Lounge Access 2026

Verdict

For Australian travellers in 2026, Priority Pass remains the widest global lounge network and the default paid direct-membership choice for anyone flying beyond Asia. LoungeBuddy is no longer a standalone paid product; it lives inside the American Express Lounge Finder and is useful only to eligible Amex cardholders, who should also note the 8 July 2026 and 1 October 2026 Amex Platinum policy changes. DragonPass fits travellers who route heavily through Asia, care about airport dining discounts and fast-track, and are happy with a somewhat narrower European and North American footprint. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking so the flight, accommodation, and add-on legs of your trip carry cashback even when the lounge membership itself does not. Use ShopBack to stack cashback on top of any card rewards you earn on the purchase, via a click-through from the merchant page.

The three programs, explained plainly

Airport lounge access in Australia in 2026 splits into three practical paths. The first is Priority Pass, a paid direct membership run by Collinson that unlocks around 1,900 independent lounges across roughly 148 countries. The second is LoungeBuddy, once a standalone app selling individual day passes and now absorbed into the American Express Lounge Finder for eligible Amex Card Members. The third is DragonPass, a direct-membership program of around 1,400 lounges plus fast-track lanes and dining discounts, popular with travellers routing through Greater China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

None of these are airline-owned lounges. Qantas Club and Virgin Australia Lounge sit outside all three networks and require their own paid membership or airline status. If your travel is mostly domestic and you want the Qantas or Virgin domestic lounge network, none of these three programs solves that. If you fly internationally out of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, or Adelaide and want a lounge before boarding, all three overlap on Plaza Premium at the international terminals, which is where most Australian lounge decisions actually happen.

The mechanic differences are important. Priority Pass charges an annual fee plus per-visit fees at lower tiers, or an unlimited-visit fee at the Prestige tier. DragonPass mirrors the Priority Pass structure but includes dining and fast-track credits in Australia. LoungeBuddy in its current form is not a fee you pay directly; it is a discovery tool for lounges your Amex card already covers, and the Amex Platinum Card is the practical vehicle for using it.

Priority Pass: the widest network for direct membership

Priority Pass sells three tiers to Australian travellers, all denominated in USD (the invoice is USD even if you pay from an AUD card, with FX added at the time of purchase). Standard membership is USD 99 per year, which does not include any visits: every lounge entry costs USD 35 per person, so a single trip with two lounge visits costs USD 99 + USD 70 = USD 169. Standard Plus is USD 329 per year and includes 10 lounge visits, with subsequent visits at USD 35 each. Prestige is USD 469 per year with unlimited included visits for the primary member, plus USD 35 per guest per visit at every tier.

For an Australian traveller doing two to three international trips a year (four to six lounge visits), Standard is usually the cheapest. Total-cost math on six visits: Standard at USD 99 + (6 x USD 35) = USD 309, versus Standard Plus at USD 329 for 10 included visits, versus Prestige at USD 469. Standard wins under seven visits, Standard Plus wins between seven and nine, and Prestige becomes cheaper past ten annual visits.

Add guest fees if you travel with a partner: two people flying six times together is twelve visits, which pushes Prestige maths in your favour for the primary card, though guest visits still cost USD 35 apiece.

The Priority Pass network in Australia is anchored on Plaza Premium at Sydney T1, Melbourne T2, Brisbane international, and a smaller footprint at Adelaide and Perth. Coverage is stronger internationally than domestically. Where Priority Pass wins outright is Europe and North America. Long-haul travellers routing through London, Paris, Frankfurt, New York JFK, or Los Angeles will find more Priority Pass options than DragonPass options in transit.

LoungeBuddy: only useful if you already hold an Amex

LoungeBuddy's original pitch, circa 2015 to 2020, was a mobile-first app selling one-off lounge day passes and matching your card benefits to lounges you could access. American Express acquired LoungeBuddy and folded the underlying tech into the American Express Lounge Finder. As of 2026, the LoungeBuddy web address redirects to the Amex Lounge Finder, and the standalone day-pass purchase flow is not the primary product.

That reframes LoungeBuddy for Australian travellers. It is not a competing paid membership to Priority Pass or DragonPass. It is a discovery tool that eligible American Express Card Members use to look up which lounges their card grants access to, including Centurion Lounges (where they exist), Plaza Premium via the Global Lounge Collection, and Priority Pass lounges via complimentary Priority Pass enrolment on the Platinum Card.

The Amex Platinum Card in Australia bundles Priority Pass enrolment as a benefit, which is why Platinum Cardholders often do not need a paid Priority Pass membership. But there are important 2026 changes to know about before assuming the benefit will look the same next year. American Express Australia has published the following:

• 8 July 2026: access policy changes apply to Centurion Lounges in Australia and at select international locations.
• 30 September 2026: Lufthansa Lounge access via the Global Lounge Collection benefit ends for Eligible Card Members.
• 1 October 2026: complimentary Priority Pass enrolment and Priority Pass lounge access will be available only to the Primary Platinum Card Member. All complimentary Priority Pass memberships and lounge access for Additional Card Members will end.
• 1 October 2026: the Plaza Premium complimentary guest allowance for Australian issued Platinum Personal and Platinum Business Cards changes from two guests to one.

If you rely on your partner's Additional Platinum Card for their Priority Pass access, or you routinely bring two guests to Plaza Premium, plan for the change from 1 October 2026 and factor it into whether a paid Priority Pass or DragonPass membership sitting alongside the Amex Platinum makes sense in your household.

Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at Amex-partner hotel and airline sites listed on shopback.com.au to complement the lounge benefit with cashback on the paid legs of the trip.

DragonPass: Asia strength plus dining discounts in Australia

DragonPass runs the same tiered structure as Priority Pass. Classic is USD 99 per year and includes one visit, with each additional entry at USD 32 per person. Preferential is USD 219 per year and includes eight visits. Prestige is USD 399 per year and includes unlimited visits for the primary member. At current exchange rates that maps to roughly AUD 145 for Classic, AUD 335 for Preferential, and AUD 610 for Prestige, with FX added by your issuer.

Where DragonPass wins for Australian travellers is twofold. First, dining discounts of up to 25% at selected airport outlets across Australia and globally are included with all DragonPass memberships. If you are the kind of traveller who eats at the airport rather than in the lounge, this is a real dollar saving on top of the lounge access. Second, DragonPass's Asia footprint is deep: Plaza Premium is a Hong Kong-headquartered network with strong coverage across Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Guangzhou, all of which are common Australian transit hubs.

The trade-off is that DragonPass's Europe and North America network is narrower than Priority Pass's. Long-haul travellers routing through London Heathrow, Paris CDG, or New York will find fewer options. Australian travellers whose trips are heavily Asia-weighted (Japan, Southeast Asia, Greater China) often find DragonPass a better fit, while travellers weighted to Europe and North America lean Priority Pass.

DragonPass is also bundled as a complimentary benefit on several Australian credit cards, typically with a capped number of free visits per year and paid visits above the cap. Verify the current terms with your issuer before buying a paid DragonPass membership: the card benefit may already cover your usage.

Head-to-head: coverage, price, guests, and card pairing

Global network size: Priority Pass roughly 1,900 lounges across 148 countries. DragonPass roughly 1,400 lounges plus 200+ fast-track lanes and 2,500+ travel experiences. LoungeBuddy is not a network in the same sense; it is a discovery tool for Amex-cardholder-eligible lounges.

Australia network: All three overlap heavily on Plaza Premium at Sydney T1, Melbourne T2, and Brisbane international. Adelaide and Perth coverage is thinner but exists on both Priority Pass and DragonPass at Plaza Premium. LoungeBuddy via the Amex Platinum benefit also unlocks Plaza Premium (subject to the 1 October 2026 guest change) plus Amex Centurion Lounges where they operate.

Entry-level annual fee: Priority Pass Standard at USD 99 (no visits included), DragonPass Classic at USD 99 (1 visit included). LoungeBuddy has no equivalent standalone entry fee; the practical entry cost is the Amex Platinum annual fee.

Unlimited tier: Priority Pass Prestige at USD 469 with unlimited visits. DragonPass Prestige at USD 399 with unlimited visits. LoungeBuddy via Amex Platinum offers Priority Pass Prestige-equivalent access as part of the Platinum benefit (subject to the 1 October 2026 changes).

Guest fees: Priority Pass charges USD 35 per guest at every tier. DragonPass charges USD 32 per guest at most lounges (some Australian lounges charge more). LoungeBuddy via Amex Platinum historically allowed two complimentary Plaza Premium guests; from 1 October 2026 Australian-issued Personal and Business Platinum Cards drop to one complimentary guest.

Dining discounts: DragonPass includes up to 25% off at selected airport dining outlets. Priority Pass has a smaller restaurant credit program in select markets. LoungeBuddy via Amex Platinum inherits any Amex-partner dining credits published in the Lounge Finder.

Card pairing: Priority Pass Select comes as a benefit on several Australian premium cards (verify current terms with your issuer). DragonPass is bundled on select Australian cards with a per-year visit cap. LoungeBuddy is only useful if you hold an eligible American Express card, principally Platinum.

Which one should an Australian traveller choose in 2026

The right answer depends on trip cadence, region, and household guest patterns.

Two to three international trips per year, mixed regions, no premium Amex: Priority Pass Standard at USD 99 per year with pay-per-visit is the cheapest and most flexible entry point. You are not locked into a network, and you can always upgrade to Standard Plus mid-year if travel picks up.

Six to nine international trips per year: Priority Pass Standard Plus at USD 329 covers ten included visits, or DragonPass Preferential at USD 219 covers eight. DragonPass wins on headline price at this tier if your routing suits its network.

Twelve or more international trips per year, or you travel with a partner every trip: Priority Pass Prestige at USD 469 or DragonPass Prestige at USD 399, depending on your regional footprint. Prestige-tier unlimited maths favours the traveller who visits lounges on both outbound and return.

Heavily Asia-weighted travel: DragonPass fits better than Priority Pass. Plaza Premium coverage is dense across Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Greater China, and the dining discount adds value at long transit sits.

Heavily Europe or North America-weighted travel: Priority Pass fits better than DragonPass. The lounge count in London, Paris, Frankfurt, New York, and Los Angeles is materially higher.

American Express Platinum Cardholder: LoungeBuddy via the Lounge Finder is already your discovery tool. Do not buy a paid Priority Pass alongside your Platinum until after 1 October 2026, when Additional Card Member Priority Pass enrolment ends. If your household previously used the Additional Cardholder's Priority Pass, plan for the change: a paid Priority Pass Standard at USD 99 with pay-per-visit is often the cleanest fix for the second traveller in the household.

Travelling with two guests to Plaza Premium in Australia: From 1 October 2026, the Platinum complimentary guest allowance for Australian issued Personal and Business Cards drops from two to one. A DragonPass or Priority Pass membership for the guest, or paying the standard guest fee, becomes the practical workaround.

Beyond the lounge: what actually drives Australian trip savings

Lounge memberships are a small slice of trip cost. The larger levers on any Australian international trip are the flight, the accommodation, and the on-ground spend (car hire, activities, dining). Cashback compounds meaningfully across those legs:

• Flights: ShopBack partners include major airlines and OTAs. Cashback rates vary by campaign window and airline.
• Hotels: Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia, and Hotels.com are all ShopBack partners. Rates vary, and stacking cashback with a hotel loyalty program (Marriott Bonvoy, Accor All, Hilton Honors) is usually additive.
• Car hire: ShopBack partners include major hire brands. Rates vary by pickup city.
• Activities and tours: Klook, Viator, and GetYourGuide typically appear on ShopBack's travel category.
• Travel insurance: Cover-More, Fast Cover, and other travel insurers appear as partners.

The lounge is where you spend two hours per trip. The booking is where you save two hundred to two thousand dollars per trip. Get the booking side right first.

Card benefit vs paid membership: the household math

For many Australian households the correct answer is a mix. The primary traveller holds an Amex Platinum (or another premium card with complimentary lounge access) and uses the card benefit as the anchor. The second traveller in the household holds a paid Priority Pass Standard at USD 99 per year and pays per visit. Guests are paid at USD 35 per person as they arise.

This structure keeps the household's unlimited visits on the primary card, avoids paying for two premium annual memberships, and stays flexible if either card's benefit terms change. The 1 October 2026 Amex Platinum changes are a case study: households that had two Additional Cardholder Priority Passes bundled will lose one from October, and a paid Priority Pass Standard on the second traveller sidesteps the disruption without a Platinum tier upgrade.

If the primary card is not an Amex Platinum, or if you do not hold a premium card at all, the direct-membership route (Priority Pass or DragonPass) is simply the pure question. Choose the tier that matches your annual visit count and the network that matches your regional routing.

Practical notes on booking and using lounges

Priority Pass and DragonPass memberships take effect immediately on purchase, and both issue a digital membership card that lives in the wallet app on your phone. The physical card is optional; most lounges scan the app QR code at entry. Lounge staff verify the boarding pass for the same day of travel, so arrive with your pass ready.

Peak windows in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane international are the morning long-haul departure banks (roughly 08:00 to 11:00) and the evening long-haul banks (roughly 20:00 to 23:00). Plaza Premium lounges at these times can run into their capacity limits, and both Priority Pass and DragonPass are subject to lounge access refusal at operator discretion when full. Arrive with buffer time.

Amex Centurion Lounges (Sydney international, Melbourne international) are typically less crowded than Plaza Premium but access is restricted to Amex Platinum and Centurion Card Members within specific pre-flight windows. Verify current entry windows in the Amex Lounge Finder before you travel.

If your itinerary routes through a hub city with multiple eligible lounges (Singapore Changi is the canonical example), check both networks before you go. The best lounge in the terminal for your gate may be on one network and not the other, and switching between paid membership and card benefit is not always possible mid-trip.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Priority Pass, LoungeBuddy, and DragonPass? Priority Pass is a direct-membership lounge network of roughly 1,900 lounges across 148 countries. LoungeBuddy is an American Express-owned platform that has been folded into the American Express Lounge Finder, mainly a discovery tool for Amex cardholders rather than a standalone paid membership. DragonPass is a direct-membership network of about 1,400 lounges plus fast-track, dining discounts, and airport experiences. For Australian travellers, Priority Pass has the widest global lounge footprint, LoungeBuddy is only useful if you already hold an eligible Amex card, and DragonPass shines on Plaza Premium coverage across Australia and Asia.

How much does Priority Pass cost in Australia in 2026? Priority Pass sells three annual tiers to Australian travellers, all priced in USD. Standard is USD 99 per year with a per-visit fee of USD 35. Standard Plus is USD 329 per year with 10 included visits, then USD 35 per visit after. Prestige is USD 469 per year with unlimited included visits. Guest visits are USD 35 per person at all tiers. Card-benefit versions (Priority Pass Select) come free with select Australian credit cards, typically with the cardholder covering visits above a set annual cap.

Are DragonPass lounges better value than Priority Pass in Australia? DragonPass and Priority Pass overlap heavily on Plaza Premium lounges at Australian international terminals (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane), so the network you use at home is often the same. DragonPass adds dining discounts of up to 25% at selected Australian airport outlets and a broader Asia footprint that suits travellers routing through Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, or Singapore. Priority Pass carries a wider global network with stronger Europe and North America coverage.

Which credit cards give complimentary Priority Pass in Australia? American Express Platinum Card holders receive complimentary Priority Pass enrolment in Australia. From 1 October 2026, this benefit will be available only to the Primary Platinum Card Member, and complimentary Priority Pass memberships for Additional Card Members will end. Several other premium cards (ANZ Black, Westpac Altitude Black, NAB Rewards Signature) have historically bundled Priority Pass or lounge visits, though terms shift year to year, so verify current benefits with your issuer.

Where can I earn cashback when booking travel around a lounge visit? Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to line up cashback on the accommodation side of your trip, and activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at partner airlines and booking sites like Agoda or Booking.com. Membership fees for Priority Pass, LoungeBuddy, and DragonPass themselves do not attract cashback because those programs are not ShopBack partners in Australia, but the flights, hotels, and car hire around your trip typically do.

Is LoungeBuddy still a separate app in 2026? LoungeBuddy is no longer a standalone paid-purchase app for individual lounge day passes. American Express acquired LoungeBuddy and has redirected the tool into the American Express Lounge Finder. Eligible Amex Card Members use the Lounge Finder to look up which lounges they can access with their card, including Centurion Lounges, Plaza Premium, and Priority Pass locations subject to their card tier and enrolment.

When do the Amex Platinum lounge changes take effect in Australia? American Express has published two dates for Australian Platinum Card Members. From 8 July 2026, access policy changes apply to Centurion Lounges in Australia and at select international locations. From 1 October 2026, access policy changes apply to Plaza Premium and Priority Pass lounges: complimentary Priority Pass enrolment moves to Primary Card Members only, and the Plaza Premium complimentary guest allowance for Australian issued Platinum Personal and Business Cards changes from two guests to one. Lufthansa Lounge access ends 30 September 2026.

Can I use Priority Pass or DragonPass at the Qantas or Virgin Australia lounge? No. Qantas Club and Virgin Australia Lounge are proprietary airline lounges tied to their own paid memberships (Qantas Club) or status tiers (Velocity Gold and above, Qantas Gold and above). Priority Pass and DragonPass access is limited to independent lounges, most commonly Plaza Premium at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane international terminals in Australia. Domestic terminal coverage is thinner.

Should I pay for a lounge membership if I only fly two or three times a year? For two to three international trips a year (four to six lounge visits), pay-per-visit typically beats an unlimited membership. USD 35 per Priority Pass visit across six visits is USD 210, well under the Prestige unlimited tier at USD 469. Standard Plus at USD 329 with 10 included visits is the break-even midpoint for six to nine annual visits. Frequent travellers with 12+ lounge visits per year, or those who value one dining-discount trip, get closer to positive on unlimited tiers.

Do lounge memberships include guest access at no charge? No. Priority Pass charges USD 35 per guest at every membership tier. DragonPass also charges per-guest fees, typically USD 32 or higher depending on the lounge. LoungeBuddy through the Amex Platinum benefit historically allowed complimentary guests at some lounges (subject to card terms), but from 1 October 2026 the Australian-issued Platinum Personal and Business Card complimentary guest allowance at Plaza Premium moves from two guests to one. Always factor the guest fee into total-cost math before choosing a tier.
