Great Southern vs Indian Pacific vs The Ghan: Australia's 2026 Iconic Rail Journeys

Short verdict: The Ghan (Adelaide to Darwin) is the best first Australian rail journey for most travellers thanks to a compact 3-day itinerary and the strongest off-train excursions. Indian Pacific (Sydney to Perth) wins for rail enthusiasts and Nullarbor scenery. Great Southern (Adelaide to Brisbane) wins if you can travel in December or January and want the quietest, most coastal route. All three run under Journey Beyond, share the Gold Service and Platinum cabin structure, and are getting two new premium tiers, Australis and Aurora Suites, from April 2026.

The three-train Journey Beyond map for 2026

Journey Beyond operates all three long-distance experiential trains in Australia. The Ghan and Indian Pacific run year-round on their signature routes and are the two most recognised trains. Great Southern is the newer summer-only service filling out the eastern seaboard.

Route summary:

• The Ghan: Adelaide to Darwin (or reverse), 2,979 kilometres, 3 days and 2 nights southbound to northbound. Runs year-round with expanded itineraries in the cooler April to October window and off-train stops at Alice Springs and Katherine (plus Coober Pedy on the northbound Darwin to Adelaide extended service).
• Indian Pacific: Sydney to Perth (or reverse), 4,352 kilometres, 4 days and 3 nights westbound. Runs year-round with off-train stops at Broken Hill, Cook, Kalgoorlie or Rawlinna, the Blue Mountains (on select departures), and Adelaide or Barossa Valley.
• Great Southern: Adelaide to Brisbane (or reverse), roughly 2,885 kilometres, 3 days and 2 nights. Runs seasonally in December and January only, with weekly departures from Adelaide on Fridays and Brisbane on Mondays. Off-train stops include Grampians National Park, Canberra, and the northern New South Wales coast.

All three trains share the same cabin structure, dining approach, and Journey Beyond service ethos. The choice is really about which slice of Australia you want to see from a train window and when you can travel.

The Ghan: Red Centre to Top End, and the best first-timer choice

The Ghan is the most photographed long-distance train in Australia and the one most international travellers pick first. Adelaide to Darwin runs 3 days and 2 nights with a full-day off-train excursion at Alice Springs on day 2 and a shorter Katherine stop on day 3. The Darwin to Adelaide direction runs 4 days and 3 nights with the additional Coober Pedy stop, which turns the journey into a more complete underground-town, gorge, and desert survey.

What Ghan does uniquely well: the geographic contrast is dramatic in a compact 3-day format. You start in Adelaide wine country, cross Red Centre desert past Uluru's outer catchment, transit Alice Springs (with helicopter, camel, quad bike, and gorge excursion options), and arrive in tropical Darwin. The Katherine excursion into Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) is a signature Journey Beyond experience that most first-time riders rank as the highlight of the trip.

Where The Ghan is weaker: it is short. If you want more time on the train itself watching the country roll past, Indian Pacific gives you an extra day. And the December to March wet season in the Top End can limit off-train comfort in Katherine, which is why April to October is the peak booking window.

Indian Pacific: Sydney to Perth and the Nullarbor payoff

Indian Pacific is the longer, more meditative journey. Sydney to Perth runs 4 days and 3 nights westbound; Perth to Sydney runs 5 days and 4 nights eastbound with an additional Blue Mountains excursion. The train crosses three states, three time zones, and the Nullarbor Plain (which includes the longest straight stretch of railway in the world at 478 kilometres).

Off-train excursions vary by direction and departure. The core stops are Broken Hill (mining town and outback art scene), Adelaide or Barossa Valley (wine tasting or a city half-day), Cook (a remote former railway settlement with a total population of four residents), and Kalgoorlie or Rawlinna (gold-fields town tour or an under-the-stars Nullarbor dinner at Rawlinna Station, one of Australia's largest sheep stations).

The Indian Pacific reward is the Nullarbor sequence itself. Day 3 is largely a slow crossing of the treeless plain with the horizon visible for 360 degrees. If you enjoy long-form landscape immersion and don't need constant activity, Indian Pacific is the better fit. If you need something to see or do every few hours, The Ghan or Great Southern will feel more paced.

Great Southern: summer-only Adelaide to Brisbane

Great Southern is the newest of the three, launched to fill the eastern seaboard rail gap left by the retirement of the Southern Aurora and other legacy services. It runs only in December and January (the summer window), with weekly Friday departures from Adelaide and Monday departures from Brisbane.

The Adelaide to Brisbane direction (branded East Coast Adventure for 2026) is a 3-day, 2-night journey with off-train excursions at Grampians National Park, Canberra, and Coffs Harbour on the northern New South Wales coast. The Brisbane to Adelaide direction (branded Coastlines & Capital Cities) covers similar territory in reverse with different excursion emphasis.

Important 2026 note: Journey Beyond has flagged track maintenance affecting Adelaide to Brisbane services departing 2 January 2026 and 30 January 2026. Both have a revised itinerary and arrive one day later than the standard schedule. Confirm your departure date on the Journey Beyond site before locking in connecting flights.

Great Southern is the least busy of the three trains at Platinum level because the summer-only schedule concentrates demand into a shorter selling window. If you can travel in the December to January window, Platinum availability is often easier to secure than on The Ghan or Indian Pacific during their peak April to October dry-season months.

Cabin classes: Gold Service, Platinum, and the new 2026 suites

All three trains share the same cabin structure. Understanding it is the biggest lever on both experience and cost.

Gold Service is the workhorse tier. Options are Gold Single (a compact solo cabin with a lower single bed and in-room wash basin, shared toilet and shower down the corridor on some legacy Ghan carriages; ensuite on the modernised carriages), Gold Twin (two berths, an upper and a lower, with a compact ensuite), and Gold Premium Twin (larger footprint, plush lounge seating by day, upper and lower berths at night, premium bedding). Gold Suite is a family-friendly variant with a three-quarter double bed plus an upper berth in a larger cabin. Meals in Gold are taken in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant (Ghan) or Queen Adelaide Restaurant equivalent on Indian Pacific.

Platinum Service is a step up in space, service, and inclusions. Platinum cabins are roughly twice the size of Gold, convert to a queen or twin configuration, and have a full-size ensuite with expansive windows. Platinum passengers get exclusive use of the Platinum Club carriage, an all-inclusive premium beverage menu, and a broader set of Signature off-train excursions included in the fare.

Australis Suite and Aurora Suite are the two new premium tiers launching in April 2026 on The Ghan and Indian Pacific. Australis is approximately three times the size of a Platinum cabin and includes a private ensuite, butler service, and exclusive off-train experiences. Aurora is approximately twice the size of a Platinum cabin with a queen bed, separate sitting area, and a large ensuite. These sit above Platinum in the cabin hierarchy and are limited-inventory at launch, so April to July 2026 availability is expected to close first.

Rough fare positioning for 2026 based on published historical fares and pre-2026 season pricing: Gold Service on The Ghan and Indian Pacific tends to sit in the mid-thousands per person one-way, with Platinum roughly 1.7 to 2 times the Gold fare. Great Southern typically prices below Ghan and Indian Pacific at the same tier. Confirm current fares directly with Journey Beyond before booking because premium peak dates (April to July on The Ghan, September to November on Indian Pacific) sell at peak-season pricing.

Off-train excursions: the real differentiator

Journey Beyond structures its off-train program around included Signature experiences and paid upgrade options. Gold Service passengers get one included excursion per stop with paid upgrades; Platinum passengers get a broader included set.

The Ghan (Alice Springs): options include the Alice Springs Desert Park (included Signature), Simpsons Gap 4WD (Signature), West MacDonnell Ranges half-day, hot-air balloon at sunrise (paid upgrade), helicopter over the Red Centre (paid upgrade), Uluru day-trip charter flight (paid upgrade at high price point). Alice Springs is the marquee stop of the entire Ghan itinerary.

The Ghan (Katherine): Nitmiluk Gorge cruise (Signature), scenic helicopter over the gorge (paid upgrade), cultural walk with a Jawoyn guide, and a Katherine Outback Experience horsemanship show on some departures. The Katherine stop is 4 hours and included excursions cover the full window.

Indian Pacific (Broken Hill): Sculpture Symposium (Signature), Silverton and Mad Max heritage tour, Pro Hart art gallery visit. Broken Hill runs about 3 to 4 hours off-train.

Indian Pacific (Cook or Nullarbor): Cook township walk (a remote railway ghost-town with a population of four), or on Rawlinna itineraries a station homestead dinner under the Nullarbor stars (Signature on specific departures).

Indian Pacific (Kalgoorlie or Barossa): Kalgoorlie Super Pit tour and gold-town history on the westbound schedule, Barossa Valley wine tasting on the eastbound schedule.

Great Southern (Grampians): guided walk in Grampians National Park, MacKenzie Falls (Signature).

Great Southern (Canberra): Australian War Memorial visit, Parliament House tour, or an evening food and wine event.

Great Southern (Coffs Harbour or NSW coast): coastal experience on the day-3 stop before the final Brisbane arrival, with local seafood and beach access.

The off-train mix is the single biggest reason first-time rail travellers pick The Ghan. The Alice Springs and Katherine stops are more distinctive per hour than any other Journey Beyond off-train experience.

Dining, drinks, and inclusions

Meals and standard beverages are all-inclusive on Gold and Platinum across all three trains. Breakfast tends to be a hot buffet or plated option; lunch is two courses; dinner is three or four courses depending on service level. Wine is regionally sourced Australian and paired to dishes on Platinum.

Gold dining is in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant carriage (or its Indian Pacific and Great Southern equivalents). Platinum dining is in the Platinum Club, which doubles as the lounge for that service level throughout the day.

Australis and Aurora Suites (from April 2026) add butler-served in-suite dining and reserved seating in Platinum dining when preferred.

Alcohol is included in-cabin (mini-bar restocked daily) and in the lounge. There is no on-board Wi-Fi across most of the routes because of remote-Australia connectivity limits, so plan for 3 to 4 days largely offline. Mobile coverage exists at the major stops but not across the Nullarbor or Red Centre stretches.

Booking cadence and when to book for 2026

Booking windows vary by season and cabin.

• Platinum on The Ghan (April to July 2026): currently selling with limited availability. Book 6 to 9 months ahead for peak dry-season dates.
• Platinum on Indian Pacific (September to November 2026): book 6 months ahead for high-season Nullarbor dates.
• Gold Twin and Gold Premium Twin on any train: 3 to 6 months lead time usually secures preferred departures.
• Great Southern (December 2026 to January 2027): books open in the year prior; the summer window has fewer departures so book 4 to 6 months ahead if you have fixed dates.
• Australis and Aurora Suites (April 2026 launch): limited inventory. Waitlists were opened in late 2025 and initial launch departures are expected to close first.

Cancellation and change policies favour early bookers because of the deposit structure. Platinum requires a $1,500 per person non-refundable deposit with balance due 60 days before departure. Gold typically requires a smaller deposit with more flexible change terms.

Solo travellers should note that Gold Single availability is limited (only a handful of cabins per carriage), and Twin cabins carry a single-occupancy supplement that can bring solo Twin pricing close to Platinum. If you are travelling solo, book Gold Single early or consider Platinum with the supplement for the space upgrade.

Getting to and from the endpoints

Rail is the middle of the trip, not the whole trip. Plan flights into and out of your endpoint cities in advance.

• Adelaide: flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth on Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar. Adelaide Airport is 15 minutes from Adelaide Parklands Terminal (the rail terminus).
• Darwin: flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and international (Singapore, Denpasar) on Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Singapore Airlines. Darwin's Berrimah rail terminal is roughly 20 minutes from the airport with Journey Beyond transfer coaches meeting arriving trains.
• Sydney: flights domestically and internationally through Sydney Kingsford Smith. Central Station (the Indian Pacific terminus) is 20 minutes from the airport by taxi or airport train.
• Perth: flights from all Australian capitals and international (Singapore, Denpasar, Doha, Johannesburg) on Qantas, Virgin Australia, and international carriers. East Perth Terminal is 10 minutes from Perth Airport.
• Brisbane: flights from all Australian capitals and international on Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and international carriers. The Brisbane Roma Street Terminal (Great Southern) is 15 minutes from Brisbane Airport.

Book flights via ShopBack partners (e.g., Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar) to earn cashback on qualifying air fares. For hotel nights on either end of your rail trip, compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking.

When each train wins

• Pick The Ghan if you have 3 to 5 days total, want the most iconic Australian landscape mix in the shortest time, and want the strongest off-train excursions. Best months: April to October (avoid Top End wet season).
• Pick Indian Pacific if you have 5 to 7 days total, want the Nullarbor crossing, and value long-form scenery over per-stop activity. Best months: April to November.
• Pick Great Southern if you can travel in December or January, want the coastal and capital cities mix rather than the outback, and prefer a shorter summer schedule with easier Platinum availability. Best months: December to January (only operating window).
• Pick more than one if you want to build a rail circuit. A common enthusiast pattern is Sydney to Perth on Indian Pacific, fly Perth to Adelaide, then Adelaide to Darwin on The Ghan, then fly Darwin home. This covers all three time zones and both signature routes across 10 to 14 days.

Practical prep

Pack for temperature swings: Red Centre days are hot and desert nights are cold in shoulder seasons; the Nullarbor is windy year-round; the Top End is tropical. Layers work better than a single warm coat.

Luggage allowances differ by service level: Gold typically 2 pieces of checked (20kg each) plus a cabin carry-on; Platinum has higher allowances; Australis and Aurora Suites are effectively unlimited within reason. Confirm on your booking documents.

Accessibility: Gold Access cabins on both The Ghan and Indian Pacific are designed for mobility-impaired guests with wider doors and adapted bathrooms. Book direct via Journey Beyond for accessibility bookings so the train crew can prepare the appropriate cabin.

Alcohol policy: all onboard drinks are included in Gold and Platinum. Bringing outside alcohol is not permitted.

Photography: the observation platforms at the back of Gold and Platinum lounges are the best photo spots, particularly at sunrise and sunset over the desert. The Nullarbor crossing at dawn on Indian Pacific is a signature shot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between The Ghan, Indian Pacific, and Great Southern trains? All three are Journey Beyond long-distance experiential trains but they run different routes and seasons. The Ghan runs Adelaide to Darwin (3 days, 2 nights) year-round. Indian Pacific runs Sydney to Perth (4 days, 3 nights westbound) year-round. Great Southern runs Adelaide to Brisbane (3 days, 2 nights) as a summer-only service in December and January, with a Coastlines & Capital Cities service in the Brisbane to Adelaide direction.

How long does The Ghan take from Adelaide to Darwin in 2026? The Ghan is a 3 day, 2 night journey covering 2,979 kilometres between Adelaide and Darwin, with off-train excursions in Alice Springs and Katherine. The Darwin to Adelaide direction takes 4 days and 3 nights with an additional stop at Coober Pedy on the extended itinerary.

When does the Great Southern train run in 2026? The Great Southern is a summer-only service running December through early February 2026, with weekly departures from Adelaide on Fridays and Brisbane on Mondays. Journey Beyond has flagged track maintenance on the Adelaide to Brisbane trips departing 2 January and 30 January 2026, both of which have a revised itinerary arriving one day later. Always confirm the current schedule with Journey Beyond before booking flights around your rail dates.

Which is better for first-time rail travellers, The Ghan or Indian Pacific? The Ghan is usually the recommended first Australian rail journey because it is shorter (3 days versus 4 days westbound), the Red Centre and Top End contrast is dramatic within a compact trip, and the Alice Springs excursion is one of the strongest off-train experiences on any Journey Beyond route. Indian Pacific rewards rail enthusiasts who want to cross the Nullarbor and see three time zones from a window.

Explain the cabin classes available on Journey Beyond trains in 2026. Gold Service includes Gold Single, Gold Twin, and Gold Premium Twin cabins with ensuite bathrooms and full dining in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. Platinum Service includes a larger cabin with a queen or twin bed configuration, a full ensuite, exclusive access to the Platinum Club carriage, and enhanced dining. Two new premium tiers, the Australis Suite and Aurora Suite, launch on Indian Pacific and The Ghan in April 2026, with Australis roughly three times the size of a Platinum cabin and Aurora roughly twice the size.

Are meals and drinks included on Journey Beyond trains? Yes. All Gold and Platinum fares are all-inclusive of meals, regionally sourced Australian wines, beer, and standard bar drinks throughout the journey. Off-train excursions in Gold Service typically include one included option per stop with paid upgrades available, while Platinum passengers receive access to a broader set of included Signature experiences.

Do I earn cashback on Australian rail bookings through ShopBack? Journey Beyond direct is not always a ShopBack merchant, so most cashback pathways run through the hotel and pre and post-rail travel side of your trip. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking Alice Springs, Darwin, Perth, or Brisbane accommodation, and activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at partners like Booking.com, Agoda, and Hotels.com. Start at shopback.com.au/travel to see the current travel partner rate card alongside your rail booking.

Where does the Indian Pacific stop for off-train excursions? Indian Pacific off-train excursions in 2026 include Broken Hill (a mining and outback art town), the Barossa Valley or Adelaide (depending on direction), Cook (a remote former railway settlement on the Nullarbor Plain), Kalgoorlie or Rawlinna (gold-fields town or Nullarbor sheep station dinner under the stars), and the Blue Mountains on select departures. The exact excursion mix depends on direction of travel and the specific departure.

Can you book flights and rail on the same trip through ShopBack? Yes. Book flights via ShopBack partners such as Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Trip.com to earn cashback on the air segment. For the rail leg, plan the trip end-to-end via ShopBack Travel Planner so you can compare hotel and flight partners alongside your Journey Beyond dates. Cashback tracks on qualifying flight and hotel bookings but does not apply to the rail fare itself unless Journey Beyond is an active ShopBack merchant at the time of purchase.

Is The Ghan or Indian Pacific better value for money in 2026? On a per-night basis The Ghan tends to feel like better value for first-time riders because the excursions in Alice Springs and Katherine are more distinctive per stop and the shorter itinerary front-loads iconic Australian imagery. Indian Pacific is longer, has more sit-and-watch scenery on the Nullarbor, and rewards travellers who see the train itself as the destination. Book early for either train because Platinum sells out months ahead in peak season.
